Galway City townhome description
Nile Lodge is a prestigious, private residence in the heart of the cultural city of Galway. It is one of the most important private houses in the city of Galway. It is perfectly located down the road from the seaside promenade, the longest in Europe, and the recreational historic part of Galway City is just a five minute walk away, just far enough to have the tranquility and quiet that this house offers yet the convenience of being close to the finest restaurants, live music events and dozens of delightful Irish pubs, where music and lively conversation is at its best.
This house was built for Captain and Commander William Hutchinson, while he was a member of Admiral Nelson's Navy. This historic house, with beautifully proportioned rooms, was built in 1807, from it the surrounding area gets its name. In 2013, for the first time, Nile Lodge was opened to the public for one day because of its architectural importance to the City of Galway.
This beautiful house stands on over an acre of private, mature gardens. These gardens are beautifully landscaped and provide an oasis of calm within minutes of the center of Galway City. When it was built Nile Lodge was on the shores of Galway Bay. In later years, land was reclaimed and the seaside now lies about 300 yards away. The nearby seaside promenade down the road from the house is the longest in Europe is a great place for walking or jogging. For the hardier guests the diving tower at Blackrock (diving into the sea at high tide)or a swim in the bracing waters is a must!
Nile Lodge is reputedly designed along the lines of the bridge of a ship of the Nelson period. It presents a wonderful ‘Upstairs-Downstairs’ ambiance. The beautiful dining and living rooms at the entrance to the house feature marble fireplaces and high vaulted ceilings with large original sash windows through which you can enjoy the sun throughout the day. The house is furnished to an exceptionally high standard with exquisite hand-cut chandeliers, Irish carpets and superior quality antiques. The rich and colorful history of Nile Lodge is visible throughout the house with many historic pictures and documents relating to the house.
The family living room at the end of the entrance hall also features an original vaulted ceiling. This elegant spacious room has a large open fire and is perfect for informal dining and relaxed conversation. Double doors lead from this living room to a charming period conservatory, perfect for relaxing with a drink, having a chat or a quiet read, this in turn opens onto a high walled enclosed Italianate patio which is ideal for entertaining or barbecues.
The traditional old-world kitchen features the restored tackle cabinets from the Coach Houses, an Aga cooker with long oaks overhanging the cooker for drying clothes the old fashioned way. These are complimented by modern kitchen appliances and equipment.
There are three beautiful bedrooms on this level, The Victory, the famous ship on which the first owner of this house served, has a hand-made super-king size bed and an antique open fireplace. In Spring you can watch the wild primroses and bluebells in the garden outside this bedroom window. In Summer the weeping beech and the climbing roses are beautiful.
The King Room, also features a hand-made super-king size bed with antique chandelier and pretty original tiled fireplace. The original shutters ensure a relaxing nights sleep.
The third bedroom on this level features beautiful views over the garden as described before and has two luxury-sprung single beds, which can be converted to a super-king bed if required. The en-suites for these bedrooms have been recently been tastefully restored and feature antique and modern fittings.
The lower level, which is accessed by a separate driveway and entrance, has been recently refurbished in the same style of the main upper area, houses a charming apartment which provides accommodation for additional guests if required. The apartment has two double rooms (one with super king size bed), fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom with overhead shower. Please contact for details of apartment pricing if additional rooms are required.
There is also a Premier Private Health Clinic on the lower garden level of the house, the access to which is via a separate driveway and entrance. This is open on a part time basis only. Guests of the house have preferential treatment at the clinic during its opening hours.
Nile Lodge is a magnificent house in a superb location in Galway City. Top class restaurants, cafes, pubs, traditional music and drama theaters add to the perfection of the location. It is a perfect base for day trips to Connemara, The Cliffs of Moher, The Aran Islands and the Burren. Fishing on the River Corrib is less than one mile away as are the yachts and boats on Galway Docks and Marina.

About the owner: Nile Lodge has been part of the MacDermott family for over half a century. With a great interest of Irish history and culture I have worked for many years to preserve this beautiful house and grounds. Further research is currently being undertaken on the Captain who lived here two hundred years ago and the results to date are very exciting.
