St. George Island, Eastpoint and Apalachicola are very special places on the Florida Panhandle, known to locals as The Forgotten Coast. Come and experience the quiet and relaxing pace of Old Florida. SGI is the perfect place for your next beach vacation! The main attraction on this thin barrier island is the over twenty-two miles of white sand beaches. You can enjoy walking on the beach, shelling, fishing, birding, boating, kayaking, hiking and any of the other water sports in the surf, on the bay or up the rivers that flow into the bay. SGI is truly an outdoor sportsman’s paradise. In addition, the area offers several golf courses within easy driving distance. Unlike the highly developed coastal beaches, our area is still secluded and beautiful. We lack the high rise buildings, carnival rides, traffic jams, maddening crowds.
You will be pleased to know that Dr. Beach has ranked Saint George Island in the Top 10 US Beaches for both 2011 and 2012.
The area surrounding St. George Island is rich in preserved public lands. The St. George Island State Park, which covers one-third of island, is only one of many state parks and national wildlife areas that you can visit.
Discover our simple pleasures combined with natural treasures - beachcombing, outstanding bird watching, kayaking, world-class fishing on the Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, breathtaking sunsets and abundant wildlife. On our beach in the spring you have an opportunity to see a mother sea turtle make a nest and lay her eggs or in the late summer to watch the baby turtles emerge and start on their journey to the sea. Every day is different and there is almost always something exciting to watch.
You can climb to the top of the Cape St George Lighthouse and learn about its fascinating history at the Visitor Center and Lighthouse Keeper's Museum.
If you like to fish, you have found the right spot. Whether you hire a charter boat or fish right off the bridge, St. George Island and Apalachicola Bay offer some of the best fishing in Florida. Across the bridge in Eastpoint you will see oystermen going out and coming back with their boats full of oyster bags. This is the center of oyster harvesting activity. You will want to visit the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. The modern new building is located on the left as you approach the bridge to SGI. It houses many fascinating exhibits specific to our coastal and marine environment. The exhibits and fish tanks are a favorite for young and old alike. Then it’s a short ride over the next bridge to historic Apalachicola, in the heart of Franklin County where you can enjoy many turn-of-the-century buildings, antique shops, art galleries and award-winning cuisine.
The historical town of Apalachicola is the area’s other major attraction. In this quaint coastal town, you will find a still-working waterfront, plenty of maritime history, and lots of restaurants serving the freshest seafood on the coast, each in its distinctive style. You can tour the award-winning historic district and/or shop for clothing and gifts in the one-of-a-kind boutiques.
You’ll feel history when you breathe the salty air of Apalachicola Bay and walk the canopy-shaded sidewalks of Apalachicola’s distinguished Historic District replete with the regal homes of past sea captains, river pilots and sponge divers. Apalachicola's diverse and colorful past remains visible today as you stroll along the wide tree-lined streets where picturesque Victorian homes display the charm of years gone by. Once the third largest port on the Gulf of Mexico, Apalachicola echoes with memories of an era once filled with steamboats and schooners, railroads and lumber mills. There are more than 900 historic homes, buildings and sites in the city’s Historic District. Apalachicola is considered a “distinctive destination” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation based on its unique character, charm and dedication to historic preservation.
Apalachicola’s maritime culture is best reflected along its working waterfront. There you’ll see bustling seafood houses, weather-worn shrimp boats and stately brick buildings that once served as 19th century chandleries, net factories and warehouses. Eclectic boutiques, galleries and restaurants are tucked into nooks and crannies throughout the historic downtown commercial district. The town features meticulously restored historical homes and hotels.
