Charming House, great kitchen—2 blocks to Historic St. Helena.

Accommodations: House with garden, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths (sleeps 6)

The house is located in St. Helena, Napa Valley’s favorite town. Ideal location for exploring Napa Valley and Sonoma. Just two blocks from historic downtown—and just blocks or a short drive to renowned restaurants and wineries. The house has a spacious, open floor plan and an exceptional chef’s kitchen that is the heart and soul of the house. Designed by the cookbook author/owner for entertaining, the kitchen has a large island with stools, a high, peaked ceiling, beautiful cherry wood cabinets, two ovens (one convection), a warming oven, a microwave, two dishwashers, two full-size sinks, an ice maker, a semi-professional six burner gas stove, and lots of counter space and storage. The dining room is an extension off of the kitchen, furnished with a large Baker dining table and chairs. An 8-foot sliding door opens to the private back garden—ideal for dining and barbequing (there’s a natural gas Weber BBQ). The kitchen is fully equipped—food processor, immersion blender, plenty of pots, pans, cutting boards, dishes, sharp knives, and utensils, and a collection of cookbooks.

The house is beautifully furnished in an eclectic mix of antiques—Japanese tansu, art deco cabinet, marble topped nightstands, antique armoire—and classic furniture. The entire house has Italian terra cotta floor tiles. Central air-conditioning and heat make the house comfortable year-round.

The living room sits at the front of the house, with a French door that opens to the charming covered porch. A large stone wood-burning fireplace is the focal point of the room. There’s a 42-inch Flat screen TV with Netflix and Netflix Kids, a DVD player, and a collection of DVDs. There’s broadband wi-fi (bring your own computer).

The spacious master bedroom has a remodeled bath with a counter-to-ceiling mirror and an antique marble-top cabinet. It has a queen bed and an iPhone/iPod docking station/alarm clock. A cozy bedroom with an adjacent bathroom sits on the opposite side of the house, making it very private for two couples. The second bedroom is bright and inviting with a queen bed and a sliding door that leads to the backyard. The third bedroom is near the master bedroom—furnished with a double bed. A sliding door opens to the backyard and three 8-foot tall pocket doors open to the kitchen so the room can double as a den. The house is supplied with towels, linens—everything you’d need to move right in.

St. Helena is home to world famous wineries, some within walking distance, and many more just a short drive away in nearby towns—Beringer, Merryvale, Charles Krug, St. Clement, Beaulieu Vineyard, Alpha Omega, Heitz, Markam, Mumm, St. Superey, Hall, Provenance.

The house is just minutes to top Bay Area restaurants: Terra, Tre Vigne, Cindy’s Backstreet, French Bleu, Goose and Gander, La Condesa, Brassica.. And a short drive to The French Laundry, Meadowwood, Bouchon, Bistro Jeanty, Bottega, and Ad Hoc, SolBar, JoLe. A short drive to the world famous Culinary Institute of America that offers classes (book ahead), tours, shopping, lunch at the student café, and cooking demos. Close to Napa Valley Coffee Roastery and Model Bakery, and Gott's for burgers.

Spa at the Inn at Southbridge, mud baths and spas in nearby Calistoga (Indian Springs is my favorite). The town boasts an historic movie theater (Cameo Cinema) with first-rate films. There are also shopping, biking, hiking, art galleries, and a very special library with weekly programs. At Crane Park, there is tennis, a playground, and a skateboard park designed with input from famous skateboarder (and local), Walker Ryan. The town of Napa is about half an hour south, offering more wineries, shopping, and restaurants including Oxbow Market and The Wine Train. San Francisco is about 1-1/2 hours south.

The first Friday evening of the month, from May through October, the Chamber hosts Cheers, a street party with wine tasting, music, and food. And during June, July, and August there are free concerts at Lyman Park two Thursdays a month. The Harvest Festival and Pet Parade are held in mid-October. Plus many wineries host music, movies, BBQs, and other events. Lincoln Theatre in Yountville has music and other live programs.

For a gourmet selection of groceries, good meats, and fresh produce, there’s Sunshine Foods downtown. Oakville Grocery and Dean and DeLuca (deli, wine, and specialty foods) are just a few minutes away by car. Fridays, May through October, the St. Helena Farmers’ Market at Crane Park is open from 7:30 to noon, rain or shine. Calistoga’s market is held Saturdays, May through October, 8:30 to noon.

We are a couple from Northern California/part time Black Butte Ranch Oregon, who desired a quiet, restful, month in the Napa Valley. We found this home to be perfect in every respect, welcoming, comfortable, nicely appointed, with the most wonderful truly 'professional' kitchen, equipped with the best 'state of the art' appliances, cooking tools. It was a pure delight to prepare meals with spring fresh ingredients from the local shops/Friday market at the "Farmstead". After morning coffee on the porch, and a light brunch, we headed out to tour the 'nook & cranny's of THE VALLEY. We experienced lunch's and early dinners at the wonderful restaurants in the Valley. We were blessed with Spring weather, warm days, crisp nights. A favorite was to walk the wonderful neighborhood of lovely homes from early St. Helena days. These homes have been updated in keeping their original character. The gardens are beautifully kept, lovely, and were in bloom! Outside the door of our home was an old "Daphne" brush, divinely fragrant. Fresh rosemary hedges line the walkway. Citrus trees were heavy with fruit. The air was fragrantly heavenly. Our needs were tended beautifully tended to by the owner, Suzanne. Gracious, lovely, and tuned to making our stay perfect. As our schedule developed, we could arrive a few days earlier. We hesitated to ask! Suzanne worked hard to accommodate our schedule, arriving a few days earlier, departing earlier. She was available throughout our stay for any needs. Suzanne is active in the 'culinary field' as a professional, know the area, and was available dining suggestions. During the growing season, she can guide you to the "Farmer's Market's' for the best local produce. We highly recommended vrbo #423083 especially for couples who would like a month+ in the center of Napa Valley. What a wonderful 'home', comfy, welcoming, in the center of St. Helena. You will love the wonderful dining spots, for a long lunch over looking the Vineyards, an early dinner of 'small plates' of special offerings, or a divine dinner. Enjoy browsing the lovely town, filled with lovely shops, have a morning coffee, or an afternoon 'pick me up' in the center of one of the world's premium grape growing regions! Recommendations: The Farmstead for lunch, outside on gorgeous days. They have a "Farmer's Market on Friday's, all grown on their Long Meadow Ranch. We loved "The Market" on Main Street for early dinner's. Delightful staff!

This was a wonderful house for our visit to Napa. It close to down town St Helena so no driving is required after a long day of drinking wine. The house is spacious with an outstanding kitchen made for cooking. Gardens surround the house with fruit trees and herbs. This house is the perfect place to relax and enjoy wine country. We never met the hostess, but she was the nicest we have experienced from VRBO. She made sure we didn't have any issues and provided a personal dining recommendation list. Definitely a repeat visitor to this St. Helena home.

We stayed at this wonderful house for an extended period of time with our 2 children (age 10 and 6) and cannot say enough good things about the house, Suzanne, the owner, and the location. We were so comfortable at the house, and it has something for everyone. The kitchen is fantastic, and comes fully stocked for cooking and entertaining. The beds are extremely comfortable, the showers are great, the whole house is clean and highly functional with good reading lights, and there is more than enough closet space! There are excellent books to read, an ipod dock connected to speakers, as well as puzzles, colored pens, and a chalkboard paint wall in the kitchen for the kids (TV with Netflix, too). The backyard is a lovely place to sit and eat, and there is a gate in the backyard fence that connects to the elementary school field next door so our kids were able to go play on the play structure or kick a soccer ball whenever they wanted. The home has AC and heating, but the cool tile floors, the ceiling fans in every room, the big trees in the neighborhood, and the charming front porch covered with wisteria and bordered by white roses and rosemary all managed to keep the house cool during the day for us (in August / September). The location is fantastic - right in the heart of the historic old downtown. And despite the fact that you are walking distance to everything, it is an extremely peaceful and quiet location. The old barn and the crushed granite in the backyard are very charming, too. Suzanne is a lovely woman, and goes out of her way to make sure you are comfortable and have everything you need, but does so via email and is 100% unobtrusive and respects your privacy in every way. We would have stayed longer if we could have, and will be recommending this home to our friends and family. Book this place while you can - once the word is out, this house will be the most popular of its kind in downtown St. Helena! In addition to its proximity to all of the famous wineries in the area, the house is walking distance to all of the great restaurants on Main Street, including French Blue, Goose & Gander, Cook, and La Condesa. In the morning, it's a pleasant walk to the roasting company for coffee and Model Bakery for muffins. If you need to buy anything at the store, Sunshine Market is a short walk, too. And don't miss the opportunity to go to a St. Helena institution, the Big Dipper, for old fashioned candy and Three Twins organic ice cream!!

                      Year Purchased: 2001

About the owner: I live in Deer Park, St. Helena, not far from the rental, so I am usually available if you need me. I designed the kitchen for easy cooking and entertaining--and to make my work life easier. My long culinary career has included living in Umbria, Italy for 1-1/2 years to research and write a cookbook (The Dog Who Ate the Truffle), developing recipes for food companies and publications, styling food for photography, and acting as PR director for Beringer’s Italian wines. I am also a cooking teacher—I taught most recently at the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena. My love for Italian desserts inspired my partner Bill and me to start From Napa, an artisan Italian food company.

Why the Owner Chose St. Helena:
I moved to St. Helena from Marin County, where I grew up, so I could walk to my job at Beringer Vineyards. I selected this house because I liked the historic feel of the neighborhood, proximity to town, the open floor plan, and private backyard. It's been my favorite house to date. We moved to Deer Park because we needed space for our business.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The kitchen is extraordinary--especially if you like cooking and entertaining. I remodeled it in 2003, but it looks like I did it yesterday. It is a very comfortable house with easy access to the outdoors.
