Hollywood Hills house description

You’re in the very heart of Hollywood, but you won’t even believe you’re in L.A.! Welcome to lower Nichols Canyon in the Hollywood Hills. This retreat is quite unlike most of LA (and even Hollywood)--you’ll find yourself surrounded by the peaceful greenery of canyon hillsides with a seasonal stream running behind the house… and you can even occasionally glimpse a family of deer on the hillside. Yet you’re an unbelievably short drive (or even walk—yes, walking in L.A.!) from the excitement of Hollywood! (See our map that points out all the nearby sites.)
When you're not out enjoying the sights, this Canyon Retreat is your perfect home away from home. The living room has a fireplace and a large flat-screen HD TV with cable, an XBox 360, and unlimited downloadable Netflix. There are 3 bedrooms (each with their own HD TV), a full bath, a fully equipped kitchen and a separate dining room. This property is particularly unique in LA for the large amount of yard space to enjoy. Have a BBQ, or enjoy a drink at the tiki bar out back! We've also just added a jacuzzi/hot tub! It's in a very lovely and private spot in the yard overlooking the canyon.
“Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream…” You’ll be resting your head where members of the Beatles once did. Derek Taylor, publicist for The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Birds, and many others once lived here with his young family. The former babysitter for Derek Taylor once visited and confirmed to the current owners that she used to babysit on weekends, when Paul McCartney was often a guest and wrote songs on the grand piano that was in the living room at the time. An artist's illustration of this house can be seen in Derek Taylor and George Harrison's rare book 'Fifty Years Adrift' (we tried to include a scan we have of the page the drawing is on, but apparently it doesn't meet VRBO's image requirements).
Nichols Canyon is conveniently located a very few minutes’ drive, bike ride, or walk from Hollywood’s major attractions. Grauman's Chinese Theater, the El Capitan Theater, the Jimmy Kimmel Live show, the Kodak Theater (site of the Academy Awards), and the Hollywood & Highland Center is to one side down Hollywood Boulevard. The famous part of Sunset Boulevard is to the other--with the Key Club, the Whiskey-A-Go-Go, the House of Blues, the Viper Room, and the historic hotel Chateau Marmont, among others.
A few blocks to the south of our Nichols Canyon location brings you to the hip neighborhoods of Melrose Avenue and West Hollywood for cutting-edge shopping, top-end food finds, and and world-famous nightlife. New restaurants from renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay at The London, and Mario Batalli at nearby Osteria Mozza, let alone other sweethearts of food celebrity like Michael Bayless, Susan Fenniger and others, make this a foodie’s haven!
Come stay in Nichols Canyon in the Hollywood Hills -- and imagine the life of one of the many stars that have enjoyed this neighborhood over the years!

Location Location Location!
Location Location Location!
We had a wonderful two weeks in LA staying at Bob and Heather's lovely house. Its location in Nichols Canyon makes it a true hidden gem. It is a great base for exploring the city and surroundings and a lovely peaceful place to return to after a busy day shopping, sightseeing or just lazing on the beach. It was like a home from home for us during those two weeks - the kitchen was very well equipped and it was really nice to have certain provisions available (spices, butter, pasta etc.) The property is much bigger than it appears in photos and beautifully presented and comfortable. We are a family with two teenage boys and having only one (large) bathroom available did not prove a problem at all! Having WiFi was a great bonus. The outside spaces were good too. We loved the hammock and the hot tub. We were able to visit our favourite haunts in LA - the Grove, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills all within 10-20 minutes by car. You can get to Santa Monica and Malibu within good time despite the infamous LA traffic! We also took a hike in Runyon Canyon (as recommended by Bob and Heather) which was fabulous with some brilliant views of the city. From the evening we arrived Bob and Heather made us feel so welcome showing us everything that we needed and making some good recommendations. If we needed anything they responded really quickly, which was great. Thank you! We would thoroughly recommend this property and hope to return one day ourselves.

This was such an awesome house! Small and cozy but perfect for a small group of people! The owner showed us around and even left a bottle of wine to drink (which was drank while soaking in the hot tub)! It was the perfect retreat from the crazy streets of LA but close enough to enjoy all the top sight seeing places in LA and Hollywood! Thank you Bob and Heather!

relaxing home base in the middle of Hollywood
relaxing home base in the middle of Hollywood
If you want to relax while being in the middle of things in West Hollywood/Hollywood Hills, this is the place for you. Staying here was certainly not the typical LA experience and ran contrary to many of the LA stereotypes. The house is screened from the road by bamboo, and it backs up to a canyon where lives a cute deer family of 2 mamas and babies as well as a young buck. There is also a nice hot tub at the side of the house. To get to Runyon Canyon for a lot of hiking trails options is an easy 5 minute drive. Though the property is relaxing, it's only a 15 or 20 minute walk to downtown Hollywood and close driving distance to all of the restaurants and grocery stores of West Hollywood/Sunset Strip and Santa Monica Blvd as well as to the original farmer's market. If you are a runner, you can go on fabulous runs while checking out the area at the foot of Nichols Canyon Road. Bob & Heather were gracious hosts and good communicators, meeting us upon check in and showing us their cute house. They were thoughtful, providing us with bottled water, sodas, microwave popcorn and even a bottle of wine and health and beauty toiletries. The kitchen was easily the best equipped I have ever seen in a rental and offered cooking oils, storage films/bags, spices, all sorts of measuring cups and spoons and cook and bakeware. There was even a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer if you feel like baking! We're not big tv/movie watchers, but the available amenities included lots of books of all sorts, unlimited Netflix downloads, a video library, and video games. Having a toddler with the requisite daily naps, we more comfortable with so many entertainment options around the house. (The house was pretty child-friendly for adept walkers. There were 2 sets of 2-3 steps.) If we ever return to the area, we would be glad to stay here again. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Hollywood Hills house
Fantastic Hollywood Hills house
My party can't say enough about the Hollywood Hills Canyon Retreat. Retreat is a perfect description of what you'll find here. The house is so close to the action yet the secluded location in the hills is amazingly peaceful and quiet. The sound of frogs is all you can hear if you take a late-night dip in the hot tub (a great bonus!). The house is immaculate and nicely appointed -- Bob and Heather have done a tremendous job with the decorating. The living room is comfortable and the big-screen TV is a nice plus. The bottle of wine left in the kitchen was a nice touch. Bedrooms are nice-sized and the beds are comfy -- the master leads out to a tiki bar and inviting hammock. Everything is as depicted in the listing. Communication is excellent, and Bob and Heather are available if any issue crops up. Our party has stayed a numerous vacation homes all over the U.S. and the consensus was that this ranks at the top of the list in every category. This is the perfect home base to explore Tinseltown. Thank you Bob and Heather!

This was exactly what we were looking for!! We've just returned from a Hollywood stay visiting our daughter that lives near Hollywood and Vine, and close to AMDA. We wanted someplace close so that she could come, bring friends for dinner, and feel at home away from home. This was certainly it! Although the pictures here are nice, it's much prettier than what you see, and so comfortable. This property is located in the Hollywood Hills, incredibly quiet, but just a 10 minute drive to the hustle of Hollywood and Highland, great music, restaurants, and the constant energy of people. The kitchen is well equipped for dinner with several guests with a nice dining room and a large well seated living area. There were plenty of towels for baths as well as the hot tub, and extra sheets had we needed them. Each bedroom has a TV, and there is Wifi, and additional movie/sound equipment for residents to use, as well as a studio piano. What can I say? There are a couple of steps that lead up to the living room, and also to the master bedroom. This might be difficult for anyone with mobility issues. Parking is available for 2-3 vehicles comfortably inside a gated area. We so enjoyed the front and back patio area, and the side garden including the orange tree that was in harvest mode when we were there. Bob and Heather were so kind and welcoming, and available to us at any time. When you're traveling across the country, this is the kind of assurance that you want. Safe, comfortable, just like home.

Best VRBO experience of all time!
Best VRBO experience of all time!
Honestly, this is the best VRBO rental we've ever stayed at. The host were totally gracious, thoughtful and helpful. They were there to greet us and gave a very thorough tour of the property and how to use all the A/V equipment. They left us a full case of soda, water bottles and a bottle of great wine! The house has every amenity promised, including fresh fruit off the tree and daily visits from the red deer that live on the hill out back! Very NICE BEDS, big TV and a tiki bar! What's really nice is the lack of cleaning instructions upon departure. They say: that's what the cleaning fee is for! We loved it there. It was close to evrything and so cute! We will be back.

Owner response: Hi Kirsten! Thank you for your kind words, and we are so happy you enjoyed your stay here. You are more than welcome back any time! Happy Travels, Bob & Heather
We have been to LA many times and stayed at many places, but this one was by far the best! Fabulous location. the house exceeded our expectations in every way. The owner was helpful and pleasant to deal with. I have recommended it to my brother in law who lives nearby for any out of town visitors he may have. Check out the hot tub and make time for a hike.

Owner response: Thanks Robin ! We're glad you enjoyed your stay and you are welcome back any time. B & H
My boyfriend and I were thrilled with the night we spent at this private, unpretentious home. The owners were able to make space for us at the last minute at their spotless property, which we really appreciated. They were there to greet us, and within a few minutes of chatting, felt like friends who would give us perfect recommendations for what to do that night--and they did! They showed us quickly where everything was and how it worked and shared wonderful stories and history of the property. The yards were lovely, too--rustic, with the canyon looking gorgeous right outside the master bedroom french door. We can't wait to come back for a longer visit to explore the hills, enjoy more of L.A., and really relax inside and out at this sweet house.

Stayed for 6 nights over Thanksgiving and had a very enjoyable stay. The house is lovely--with a few minor quirks associated with an older home--but nothing that detracted from the stay. It was comfortable for our entire family. Each of our adult kids had their own room. The location was great--off the beaten path, but close to all the action. The house is sheltered from the lightly traveled canyon road by the landscaping. And the bedrooms are on the back side of the house. I am a light sleeper by nature, and always travel with earplugs. I didn't have to use them at all. We enjoyed sitting out on the front patio with a glass of wine and soaking up some sun. It sure made preparing Thanksgiving dinner more enjoyable! We didn't use the hot tub or hammock or tiki bar--but they all added to the ambience (as did the little frogs under the cushions!) We saw deer and swore there was a rooster living there somewhere. From the house, it is easy to walk up the road and into the Trebek open area, or drive to Runyon Canyon (crowded) or Fryman/Coldwater Canyon. Heather and Bob were very nice and welcoming--we didn't even get to drink the bottle of wine they provided since our Thanksgiving guests brought several. And they provided us with supplies to help cook a turkey--very thoughtful. This was my first VRBO experience, and it was very positive. I would recommend the canyon retreat and would definitely rent again.

This is a lovely place. Very charming and close to EVERYTHING. The woodsy, private feel with Hollywood less than a mile away! The owners were very easy to deal with. We had a free bottle of wine waiting for us when we got there :) The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, and condiments.

About the owner: Despite the purchase date, I've lived at this property for 20 years. (I rented here before I owned.) I also grew up in the area and am the perfect resource to ask for help in planning your trip.
Why the Owner Chose Hollywood Hills:
You can't get much more interesting than the history of Nichols Canyon. A few hundred yards down the street is Joan Crawford’s old mansion on Courtney Avenue. Bogart’s manager used to live next door. Just a few of the celebrities and artists who have lived, worked and played in Nichols Canyon over the years include: Dan Ackroyd, Kevin Costner, Ellen DeGeneris, Eva Gardner, George Harrison, Rob Lowe, Steve McQueen, Julia Roberts, Ryan Seacrest, Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr, Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, among many others. Artist David Hockney lived on upper Nichols Canyon and one of his famous paintings is of the Canyon with Nichols Canyon Road winding through it, from its starting point at Hollywood Boulevard (shown in one of our rental photos).
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Nichols Canyon is one street over from historic Laurel Canyon, where Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell, “Mama” Cass Elliott, Frank Zappa, Buffalo Springfield, and Timothy Leary, among others once lived and thrived in the 60's. A trend of artist-residents continues to this day as Trent Reznor, Meg Ryan, Justin Timberlake and others have called the canyon their home.
