Gated, secure and quiet, with a gorgeous lake and towering trees this vacation spot has been designed for relaxtion and good times.
Located just 5 minutes from Santa Monica and the beach, and directly across the street from Will Rodger's State Park. The house sleeps up to 12 (10 in real beds and 2 on convertible sofas) with 4 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, huge sunny kitchen, breakfast room and lanai, spacious dining room and living rooms. Outsidebrick patio with large fire pit, sun loungers and an amazing terrace to take in the lake views. Free Wi-Fi and Direct TV with HBO, CINEMAX and SHOWTIME are included.
The Lake House is the ultimate property for entertaining. While we are happy to accommodate requests for larger events and parties with outside guests, please note that additional fees will apply. Give me a call to plan your event.
Filled with beautiful gardens, mature trees and lush greenery, the serenity and beauty of this hidden oasis is made complete by a stunning lake which is shared with the owners who live next door.
'We wanted the beauty of the beach and the ease of living in a lake side cottage but with a fun modern vibe. So when we renovated and decorated the house we went with serene whites and splashes of vibrant color. Many of the walls are covered with larger than life, high definition photographs of flowers and animals, shot by a sought after modern photographer.'.
The Master bedroom has a king bed with a feather topper, down comforter, and 1200 count luxury sateen sheets. Divine.
The Green bedroom sleep 4 with a bunk bed and a twin bed all made with 800 count sheets and soft down comforters. Fun.
The Tropics bedroom has a queen size bed, 1400 count silky sateen sheets, a large dresser, glider rocker and a private entrance to the patio which looks out over the lake. Quiet.
The Sting Ray Room features a king size platform bed with 1200 count sheets and duvet, feather bed topper and down comforter. Flat screen TV with Direct TV premium package. Sweet.
The large kitchen is fully appointed and is a baker's dream with a big refrigerator, four burner gas stove with griddle, Bosch dishwasher, double Thermadore convection oven, toaster, microwave, blender and coffee pot.
The back patio and terrace look out over a grove of redwoods, huge sycamores and the lake. The patio features a large gas fire-pit circled by adirondacks for storytelling and smores. Chaise lounges and a sun umbrella make for a lovely spot to read in or out of the California sun!
The back yard is vast with towering trees that shade secret paths and a small stream that meanders under little wooden bridges. Waiting by the lake is a little rowboat that you are the captain of. Fish for bluegill and large mouth bass from the rocky shore, hand feed the friendly turtles(who think they are dogs) or step through the swing gate and explore one of the last natural creeks in Los Angeles, a spring fed stream that runs year round! Salamanders, tadpoles and tree frogs abound. This is a quiet and safe haven where children can play, discover and revel in nature all day long. If you can pry yourself away from all this, the famed white sand beaches of Santa Monica, The Pier, fine dining, shopping and sightseeing await you, a mere 5 minutes away!
Guests are welcome to use boogie boards, skateboards and scooters and to enjoy a game of croquet or bocce ball. The owners are right next door and can be as helpful or as invisible as you wish.

A truely magical place, even better than the photos! Our grandchildren wanted to live there permanently. They never tired of boating, fishing, swinging - tarzan like - on the ropes strategically placed by the wonderful owners, who could not have been more helpful with information and immediate responses to our requests. My husband and I could relax on the sun-filled terrace, overlooking gorgeous grounds, with the lake and kids ( aged10 and 8) in full view, so perfectly safe (younger kids would need close supervision). Inside was stylish, spotless, very comfortable and well equipped. A bright, happy house. Excellent restaurants a few minutes away in Brentwood and Rustic Canyon. We will definitely be back!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hi Dina, You were fabulous guests. Next time you come I will have an electric tea pot for you. Guests like you, who come all the way from England, deserve all the comforts of home! Both Mark and I are looking forward to your return. All the best to you and your husband, Ellie

Firstly I'd like to apologise for the delay in writing this review what with 2 young children and a business time has flown by but my memories of this beautiful house and the owners are always fresh in my mind, we stayed here for a week before Christmas on our way to cabo as my husband has business in LA I'm always sceptical about staying in houses I've never seen only in pictures as they are never as good as the photos portray but this house and its grounds were even more beautiful than the website images amazing grounds with rope swings a tree house a lake which my girls enjoyed boating on, beautiful lights adorned all the amazing trees making this a real fairy tale land, the house itself was perfect it was clean warm light and airy seamed to look bigger inside than from the outside all on one level so it was perfect for my three yr old and six yr old, we even entertained friends here who live in Los Angeles and were amazed by its tranquil beauty, my husband had to be out late at times on business and I always felt very safe here alone, plus Ellie and mark were only next door but far away enough to have all the privacy we needed, they were always on hand for any questions and were super helpful my children were always popping over to see them and their children and were always made welcome thanks for the scrummy toffee apple and the Christmas cookies and the very addictive peppermint mocha coffee Ellie x We were returning to LA after cabo also and were booked into the bel air hotel but we immediately decided to return to the lake house as its position is perfect so near to Santa Monica etc but believe me you would never know this place is truly an oasis in the middle of a huge city it's quiet beautiful absolutely perfect I really couldn't think of anything I would change about it! Thank you for being amazing hosts with amazing children and making our experience in your wonderful home so hard to say goodbye to. XRecommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

A group of my favorite girls and I stayed at this property for a weekend and we LOVED IT! We were all very very sad to leave!! The place is just as magical as the pictures make it seem! We loved the backyard/lake/fire pit/swing/patio furniture! Plus, pretty much anything you could think of that you needed is already provided. (wood, smores, towels, shampoo, kitchenware) It's so peaceful and spacious, which is very rare when you think of a weekend in LA. AND, the location was great!! You can easily access any of the other fun areas in LA! (We hit areas as far south as LAX and as far east as San Gabriel Valley). I would definitely recommend this property to all my friends and would love to go back!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We really enjoyed how Johanna and her party used the patio and fire pit area. They arranged the many outdoor chairs we had around the fire pit and enjoyed nightly gatherings there. I liked the idea of having all those ladies in the Lake House, I knew they would find many places to sit and enjoy each other's company- what a great place for a bunch of friends! Our new bedroom we call the Sting Ray room was just renovated and they were one of the first to enjoy it. I am so happy they enjoyed it. I do hope Johanna or any of her friends return, they were great guests and left the house in perfect order. All the best to you! Mahalo, Ellie

We have rented many properties through VRBO and by leaps and bounds this home is like a slice of paradise in California! Location, location, location........ when you drive into the property, you forget where you are. Behind the walls & gates is paradise. One forgets the hustle and bustle just outside the gates, yet all conveniences are less than a mile away. The home is ranch style spacious yet cozy. Well appointed in a country/modern/eclectic sense. The owner's art is tastefully spread throughout the home, like a gallery and museum of sorts. There are bedrooms that are very quiet and peaceful. The kitchen spills out to the patio and firepit/bbq area. The family room is perfect for conversation and games. One can never be bored as there is croquet, rope swings, tree house, sitting areas amongst the property and a row boat! It is hard to be motivated to leave to go and do things as one wants to just hang out and enjoy... chill. It is so relaxing that you'll not know what time of day it is. Lastly, the owners will welcome you with open arms, the biggest smiles, and the warmest hugs. Having been a landlord of a vacation rental in the past, I recommend this home 110%!Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We recently had the pleasure of renting to Jeri and her family. They were our first guests from Hawaii. mark and I had just renovated a new room which Jeri and her family were the first to experience. We call it "The Sting Ray Suite" due to the amazing photograph of a sting ray that covers the entire back wall of the room. I regret that the featherbed topper we ordered did not arrive for the new king size platform bed until after Jeri had left. We think the new mattress is a little firm but with the feather bed topper it is now dreamy and delightful! I'm happy Jeri will be returning in October to see for herself. Looking forward to more adventures as an innkeeper and host! Ellie

I had to chime in here with my own endorsement of this wonderful idyll, where my family converged recently for a rare reunion. Everything about it was terrific: as advertised, and even better. I would unreservedly recommend this place. The owners were as helpful as could be--a lovely family I would have been delighted to have gotten to know better. My wife, who's from Beijing (where I live with my two children) was crazy about the place too. Our fond memories of the place will sustain us until we can make it back there!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My wife discovered this gem on VBRO, and we could not be more ebullient about our stay there. We stayed at this beautiful oasis with our three children, my brother's family visiting from out of the country with his two children, and my elderly parents. This is a beautiful retreat with all the amenities, homey, stylish and clean, and with a wonderful air of art, comfort and serenity--combined with the gleeful cries of delighted children swinging from the many rope swings, paddling about on the rowboat on the pond, or toasting marshmallows over the firepit. The photos in this listing are spectacular but don't really even do the traditional 1940's California ranch style house and property justice. Every night we were blissfully serenaded to sleep by a chorus of frogs and crickets. Two families enjoyed an afternoon of horseback trail riding at the very nearby Will Rogers State Park (see willrogerstrailrides.com for reservations). Shopping was also a convenient trip down or up Sunset Blvd., and the beach is also nearby, just down Chataqua. Santa Monica is right next door with its pier and promenade, and Universal Studios was less than a half hour's drive in light traffic. Mark and Ellie were extremely gracious and wonderful people, more than responsive to any questions and requests, and their children happily played with our own. We will certainly be recommending this rental to all our Bay Area friends visiting LA. I think my young six year old nephew put it best: "I want to stay here forever!"Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: After months of working on our rental house it was ready to rent on July 30th! My husband and I were a little nervous not ever having been innkeepers but we were very excited to begin our adventure in hospitality. We couldn't have had a better introduction to having guests at our rental than Racheal and her family. When they checked in and saw our place I was gratified to see the children running around with excitement and joy. We learned a lot from our first renters, like getting the amps increased on our kitchen's electrical breaker, and that we needed a blender and place mats in the kitchen. As per their request, we changed our property description to let people know that we do live right next door, sharing the lake from time to time. Meeting this lovely family, being invited to share in a delicious home made chicken enchilada feast made with fresh tomatoes from our garden and a terrific red chili sauce was a lovely surprise. But being able to be their home away from home for this family reunion was very rewarding indeed. Cheers to Kaiser, John, Rachael, the children and the whole gang! Mark and I wish you the best always and hope you will come see us again when you return to LA. Mahalo, Ellie

About the owner: My husband and I have been married for 17 years and live here in the Palisades with our two girls, ages 9 and 11. We love our little community where we are fortunate to work and play. Our children attend public school, we go to church on Sundays, and can't imagine living any where else. Mark and I are both Midwesterners, I come from a rural part of Peoria, Illinois and Mark is from Chicago. I love having guests and enjoy creating an atmosphere where people can relax, feel welcome and have a wonderful time.
Why the Owner Chose Pacific Palisades:
Before we bought this property we used to drive around the neighborhood and imagine that we lived here. We just loved the rustic feel, the closeness to nature and the farm freshness of the whole area. Once we had a picnic near the creek behind the very house we would later buy and I remember Mark and I looking up at the giant sycamore trees and feeling like we had found our dream home at last.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
There is a lushness, a greenness to this place that feels very much like Costa Rica. Yet, the pond, with it's banks covered with boulders and rocks, surrounded by redwoods and fields of blooming flowers, makes us feel like we are in the Colorado Rockies. There are rope swings and hammocks, paths to explore and grassy knolls to picnic on. Concord grapes and blackberries fruit in the summer as do strawberries, blueberries, lemons and limes. Fresh mint and watercress are available year round in the creek. The slate walls that meander through the property are a great place to sit quietly and take in the sun rise over the canyon and a treehouse sits high above the pond in a giant sycamore tree waiting for adventurers to visit.
My husband Mark is an amazing gardener and he has had planted thousands of blooming flowers and trees. In March over 6000 giant daffodils bloom covering the banks around the lake in a carpet of bright yellow. In April and May the white dragon wisteria is blooming. It makes a tunnel of scented white flowers as it trails down from the 15 foot trellises. In June the orange day lilies fill the fields. July and August the cobalt agapanthus are exploding everywhere. Pink, purple and magenta cosmos bloom and wave around the lake in July and August. Every season has its beauty here.
Even in the fall, Mark has carefully selected oaks, sweet gum, pistachia and hickory trees that turn bright orange, red and gold. It's beautiful to see their colors mirrored perfectly in the lake's water.
