Squam Lake is a 5 mile by 7 mile by 7 mile lake just north of Lake Winnipesaukee. It has numerous islands and rocky shoals. It is known as the quiet lake because it is relatively undeveloped and does not have a great deal of boat traffic. Dog Cove is one of the lakes most southern points and is fairly narrow and protected. The western shoreline, where the house is, is fairly undeveloped and has a large piece of conservation land with parking on College Rd. walking trails and beaches. The lake lies just south of the White Mountains, with Franconia Notch an hour north and Bretton Woods under two hours. Hikes nearby would include Rattlesnake Mt., Red Hill, the Squam Range, Mt Stinson, Mt Moosilaukee, Mt. Chocorua and many more. The Squam Lakes natural Science Center is located in Holderness, five miles north on rt 3. The Center has extensive exhibits, trails and programs especially for children. The New Hampshire Music Festival which operates for seven weeks in the summer, is located in Plymouth, 25 minutes away, and offers excellent full orchestra and chamber concerts. ...morecollapse

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 1962

About the owner: This house was built by Eleanor Raymond, a Boston architect, for our parents as a retirement home. They lived there full-time from 1974 - 1992 and were involved in the NH Music Festival and the Science Center in Holderness. Our mother's piano is still in the house and was recently completely reconditioned.

Why the Owner Chose Squam Lake:
The house sits on 24 acres and has 625 feet of shoreline. There is also a caretaker cottage and an old barn which is on College Rd.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
With ten acres of conservation land on one side and 235 acres in the Chamberlain/Reynolds Forest on the other, there is abundant wildlife. The shoreline is part of a large cove shared by three homes. The dock is bathed in sun in the morning and shaded from mid-day on. The water in Dog Cove averages 12 - 15 feet and the swimming is excellent, as is the fishing.
