A rural retreat in a vineyard-laden valley in Mendocino County. 2 1/2 hours North of San Francisco. A converted barn, three bedrooms, 2 baths, just renovated in 2011. Serene and comfortable with the perfect beauty of classic California vistas. If you're interested in a peaceful alternative to city or suburban life, this fits the bill. Read in the hammock. Picnic at Hendy Woods, a magnificent stand of old-growth redwoods. There's a great local ice cream shop in 'town.' Come read, rest, walk, meditate, contemplate. It's beautiful. More beautiful 'in the flesh,' thank any of the photos can show...

We were looking for a quiet place to escape to and found more than we hoped for! It truly exceeded our expectations. The pictures don't/can't do it justice. If you are looking for a quiet getaway in a peaceful setting surrounded by lots of natural beauty - not to mention a very, very tastefully decorated and comfortable living space - then look no further. Things that impressed me the most: =The "barn". This has just been renovated and it was very well done. It is hard to believe that it was a barn. The kitchen has everything needed to cook a full meal...the beds - very comfortable (if I hadn't just bought a bed I would have inquired on the brand - my partner often can't sleep in a foreign bed but no problem here!)....the appliances and fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen are all new and modern....a comfortable reading chair... whimsical art pieces here and there that made me smile. =The stars - amazing! Being away from city lights I expected to see a brighter sky but it was clearer and brighter than the stars in Death Valley. This was an unexpected surprise! We were lucky enough to be here during a meteor shower and witnessed a shooting star extravaganza. That was just an added bonus - sans the meteor shower the first few nights I just sat outside and gazed above, wishing I had a map of the heavens so I knew what I was looking at. =The Trees - I loved the trees on the property. I am a tree lover and they all had interesting shapes and just plain old had lots of character (trees turn me on, what can I say?). =The crickets - they added such a subtle, peaceful feel to the overall meditative setting. I recorded them in the hopes I could capture one of those moments at dusk - sitting outside the porch, gazing into the gorgeous view of the valley, listening, just being... = The small town of Boonville - I love that small towns like this still exist. It's wonderful to get away from the hustle and noise of the city - even the suburbs - and discover that there are still places where the pace of life is slow and simple. Fresh produce, apple orchards, people say hello to you on the street... (be sure to get a copy of the local paper - the AVA. I'm considering subscribing...). I am probably leaving something out. It is a wonderful place in a great setting with very nice owners. We left feeling very relaxed and very lucky to have found it. Although it was only 2 hours from home, it felt like we were a million miles away.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, people with disabilities.

About the owner: We are from Hollywood! This retreat of ours in Mendocino County offers us the opposite to our life in Los Angeles. We work in the entertainment industry; I am a writer and my husband is an actor. (Mendocino is my writing retreat.) We truly cherish the times when our family, our children and grandchildren, come and enjoy the retreat with us. In summer, the kids love the pool, hiking, going into the forest, going to the beach on the coast, taking our 'poke boat' out on the rivers, and lying in the hammocks to read and rest. Being in this tranquillity definitely represents The Other to our urban lifestyle.
Why the Owner Chose Boonville:
Anderson Valley is a very beautiful (VERY beautiful!) classic California landscape: grasslands and california oaks, and many vineyards with Mendocino appellations. The Louis Roederer champagne-makers (makers of Cristal Champagne in France) have chosen Anderson Valley for their American vineyards and produce Roederer Sparkling Wines in the valley. It is a simpler, less gentrified, and more agrarian environment than Napa, with lovely sophistication and atmosphere in the valley. The forests are comprised of coastal redwoods, the tallest trees on earth. As the crow flies, it's about fifteen or 20 miles inland from the north coast of California, insuring sunshine in the valley when it's often foggy on the coast. There are a couple of small towns in the valley, which have local restaurants, and the food sensibility is quite satisfying, with contemporary California values that appreciate what is from the locality. There are many day trips to experience, town and country, and the peacefulness and beauty of the environment is treasured, rarer and rarer in the world today. We've planted some olives, lavendar, rosemary, a riot of roses... it's California with the scents of Provence. In the autumn, the vineyards turn burgundy and gold, depending on the varietals. It is breathtakingly lovely to behold.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peace. tranquillity. An alternative to a faster-paced existence. A place to re-charge...
