Cushing Island cottage description
Quaint 1880 shingle-style cottage located on the western side of Cushing's Island, in Casco Bay. The house is just steps away from Little Beach, with sweeping views of the cove and Casco Bay. There are 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths, LR, DR, kitchen, and a screened-in porch. The house rental rate allows up to 10 guests.
Cushing's Island is a small privately-owned island in Casco Bay with extensive carriage roads and walking paths through the picturesque landscape. Islanders enjoy walking, birding, swimming, sunbathing, tennis, fishing, kayaking, sailing, and or you can just relax on the porch and watch the ever-changing parade of water craft, clouds, and sunsets. There are no cars, stores, or restaurants on the island. The caretaker drives the only vehicle. Regular (private) ferry service leaves from the Portland waterfront from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so if desired, you can go off-island for a day of shopping and sight-seeing. Cushing's Island is a great setting for quiet family vacation - removed from the hustle and bustle and yet just minutes from Portland.

Perfect in every way!
I would highly recommend this charming cottage to family and friends. The decor is fun, the view is spectacular and the screened in porch is delightful! The kitchen is very well stocked and the house is beautifully kept. We would stay there again in a minute!

Cute house on a great island
Cute house on a great island
We had a great stay at this home. Before even arriving, we felt taken care of by the owners. There are some logistics involved (ferry schedules, mainland shopping, what to bring) given the island location and the fact that there are no stores on island. The owners were helpful and gracious in answering our questions around all of this. We got to meet them in passing as the ferry shuttled us on and them off the island and it was clear that they enjoy their gem of a home on the island as much as we did and are happy to share the wonderful experience of Cushing Island living with others. This island is a special place. No cars, beautiful beaches, friendly people, most of whom have vacationed there for generations. The house itself was perfectly situated, with a view of "children's beach" from the most comfortable porch. We spent many hours relaxing on this beautiful porch. We ate most of our meals out there. My husband and I could watch the kids (old enough to be down on beach alone) from the porch, a real perk! The house is rustic vintage but oh so charming. There are a few quirks and some peeling paint here and there but this only adds to the charm. The pictures accurately represent. Clean, well stocked kitchen. Plenty of towels, comfy sheets and quilts and even shampoo in all the bathrooms. There are fans in all the bedroom and no need for AC so very comfortable sleeping every night. We are sad that we cannot get back there this summer but hope to next summer.

Owner response: Thanks for the great review! We loved sharing the island with you. Last fall we painted the exterior and replaced all exterior decks. This spring we will paint interior rooms facing the ocean. Hope you can visit in 2014!
