Hey Beth and Dave, I am home in my chilly little corner of the earth right now reflecting about our lovely and idyllic stay at your wonderful home. I knew of the area and had stayed up the road, so I knew about how lovely Painted Church Road was. Its at just the right elevation, in the forest, surrounded by a constant, soothing chorus of birdlife. From the moment we stepped inside the door and were welcomed by both Dave and Beth's hospitality and the feel and views of the house, we knew that we were in for a treat. It was an instant feeling of relaxation. The coastal views looking north towards Captain Cooks Monument and Kealakakua Bay are stunning. The windows surround you with tranquil views in all directions...nothing to see but nature and the sea. We spent days enjoying the pool, cooking in the generous kitchen with ample provisions, spices, coffee, pineapples, Avocado and Banana that Beth and Dave provided for us. I was torn between wanting to sleep laze the comfortable bed, surrounded by the pacifying noises, or awake to sit on the lanai and watching the sunrise over the mountain lighting the land, my coffee in hand. I loved the breezes that flow gently through the house. Mostly the lanai won out. And although I am a late sleeper at home, I awoke easily in the tropical warmth and enjoyed Banana Bread and Coffee each morning. We all want to thank you for sharing your lovely house with us. All of the details and care that you put into it are so beautiful. The privacy and location are so lovely. We cooked every day and shared many wonderful meals and enjoyed our last afternoon relaxing by the pool. We were torn between another sunset BBQ at Place of Refuge, but there really is not a bad choice to make. While we cooked out at Place of Refuge on more than one occasion we had whales frolicking offshore the whole time. We saw Whales Fluking at Two Step Beach, and we got to see Eagle Rays and Turtles. All in all...can't really complain! The rainstorm our last night and subsequent chorus of creatures to lull us to sleep was a nice experience too. You have a wonderful and special place there, and we all wish you lots of success and enjoyment with it in the years to come...and if we are lucky enough to share it again, well that is something that we can only look forward to in our dreams. Again...thank you so much. Your home is a special place on earth, made more special and delightful by the way you take care of it and us! Our family has had countless trips to Hawaii over the last fifty years and we have stayed in various types of accommodation but The Hideaway was a special treat for all of us. We were looking for a different Hawaiian experience and found it here. The location of the house 700 feet up on the mountainl with the view of the ocean was spectacular as were the unique furnishings and tastefully funky decor that Beth has created. Dave was very helpful and willing to advise on any query we had. We had hoped the kids would have an adventure at this home and we were right. They had a great time. The description and photos of the main house is accurate and we would recommend this property to a friend.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This property really is as good as it looks in the pictures. It's Dave and Beth's own home, but they rent it out when they are house sitting a friends house in the neighborhood. The house is tastefully decorated, in a quiet location in the Captain Cook area. One of the advantages of staying in somebody's actual home is that everything is in excellent working order. It's so nice to have a fully equipped kitchen to your disposal. The Two-Steps beach is down the hill, but you'll need a car to get there (and back!). Two-Steps is an excellent snorkeling location and the Caption Cook Monument bay is perfect for kayaking and watching the dolphins early in the morning. Paddling boards and kayaks are available at the house. Dave and Beth are super nice and are happy to share their knowledge about all the nice restaurants and activities in the area. We loved Captain Cook. It's very peaceful and relaxed. We were sorry we had to leave. Our dream is to come back and stay for two or three weeks next time. Mahalo Dave and Beth!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Before booking a vacation property, I probably looked at hundreds of listings between three different sites. Once I found this one, I kept going back to it. There was just something special about it which I later determined to be the fact that it's Dave and Beth's actual primary home. That explains the warm and unique decor--it's definitely not one of the carbon copy condos populating the Big Island. The property is actually further south than I initially realized; it's definitely past the main portion of Captain Cook. This wasn't an issue for us since we weren't planning to spend much time in the actual city of Kona. I preferred the more rural setting, as did my fellow travelers. I went with my boyfriend, our friend (we're all in our mid-30s), and my younger brother who turned 21 the day we got to Hawaii. The house is absolutely true to the pictures, down to the knick knacks. I of course staked claim in the master bedroom--no way was I giving up that bathroom with the sunken tub! Our friend took the other bedroom and while Doug gave us an inflatable mattress for my brother to use, he ended up just using his sleeping bag on the sort of day-bed on the covered porch. I loved the small private porch off of the master for morning coffee, reading, etc. It was nice to have TV, but felt my bf and friend overused it; I would much rather have music than noise of TV when no one's really watching. Be aware that sound does travel, esp. when people are talking outside since most of the windows are screen only. Hopefully the guys in my group didn't bother the people staying in the studio. The fresh fruit was a great bonus and my brother ate a plethora of papayas that Dave supplied us with. I was sorry we missed mango season. Being able to cook meals was helpful and I liked having the grill in the carport area. The boys used one of the paddle boards and we took a kayak trip to Captain Cook one day. Definitely plan ahead and get a landing permit. It's easy and will make your life easier & make you feel good for following the rules ;o) Being able to borrow the kayaks and snorkeling equipment probably saved us over $200. Tips: *If you stop at Costco, don't go too crazy. We had a lot of leftover food which I hope Dave and Beth were able to use. *Bring earplugs (coqi frogs and geckos are loud) and a sleeping mask if you're a light sleeper and want the option of sleeping in. *Make the bed tightly. The days I didn't, I found ants once and then a millipede. *Have fun!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This is the place to stay if you are looking to stay in real Hawaii! The sunsets are spectacular, you are away from the city noise, and you cannot find a more welcoming and relaxing place to stay on the island. It is a short drive from Two Step beach, and Dave and Beth provide you with everything you need - kayaks, paddleboards, beach chairs, boogie boards, snorkel gear! Also a short drive to Captain Cook, Place of Refuge National Park, multiple small beaches. Many of the nearby towns are good for art, antiques, clothes and gift shopping; and there are multiple farmer's markets around. The photos accurately portray the property, and the house is kept very clean and well maintained. Beth has done a wonderful job of decorating the house in an understated Hawaii theme; the two smaller rental units downstairs also are charming with their own individual Hawaiiana themes. Dave and Beth do an excellent job of making you feel at home - fresh fruit when you arrive, will help you get the kayaks and paddleboards down to the beach, and help you figure out how to get around and what restaurants are worth checking out. I definitely recommend staying here!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My family had an amazing time staying on the Big Island of Hawaii and our stay at this home made it an even more incredible experience. We felt at home as soon as we walked in, everything we could have wanted was provided for us. The home is beautiful, spacious with incredible views from everyroom. It is furnished like a true artist's home with exquisite furniture and artwork and we were very comfortable. The home is so close to all the sites and beaches we wanted to see on the Kona side of the island and the owners were always ready with answers and help if we needed anything or had a question. A lovely, private oasis in a place called paradise. Highly recommend!!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I loved it here and will definitely return. The hosts are gracious and down to earth. The home is beautiful, comfortable, eclectically & artfully decorated and has everything you need. Beth and Dave have thought of everything: snorkel gear, kayaks, boogie boards, paddleboards beach chairs, umbrellas, ice chests and all the gear needed to put it on your rental car! You just need to show up with your bathing suit and coral friendly sunscreen, they have everything else covered. The location could not be better. It is a short drive to two of the best spots on the island, Two Step and Kealekakua Bay (Cooks Bay). To drive 5 minutes from your beautiful vacation home, take your loaner kayak off your car, paddle out a quarter mile and then to swim with wild dolphins is priceless. I have used VRBO several times, but nothing beats Beth's Hideaway, it ranks at the top!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This house provides that "special" atmosphere that you want for your special Hawaii vacation. The decor and feeling of this beautiful house creates that idea that "I could live here". Our hosts were super gracious and made us feel like we could just stay forever. The house is close enough to everything that you might want to do like snorkle with the dolphins near Captain Cook inlet, swim on a secluded but beatiful sandy beach, visit the volcanoe, or just enjoy some great local food yet it is not too far from the busy night life at Kona. The sunsets were beautiful as we sipped our wine on the back porch. We have stayed here many times and are always ready to return for our next adventure.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed here with some very good friends and had a great time. The two master suites are well appointed and have there own private lanai's. The common area has a wall mounted TV and there is a good DVD library. The kitchen is great and the Mango bar is awsome. Great views of the coast including Kealakekua Bay from the lanai's and dining area. The entire house was very clean and was very warmly decorated with all the personal touches of a home. Dave was very helpful with what to see and do in the area and also very helpful in showing us how to load and unload the kayaks and paddle boards on our cars, having the use of all the equipment was a big plus in our decision to stay there. The pool and the entertainment area (BBQ, chaise lounges, tables and umbrellas) were great. There is so much to do in the immediate area, two steps for snorkeling, Captain Cooks Monument for kayaking The City of Refuge National Historical Park, the black and white sand beach at Hookena County Park the local farmers markets on the weekends also don't miss the sunsets at the picnic area in the national park. We will for sure come back here with our friends and will recommend it to others. We love the Big Island with its authentic island vibe and great variety of landscape! We have visited many times over the years and have never loved our visits so much as when we are able to stay at Beth & Dave's beautiful ocean view property. It is truly a lovely home - both cozy and spacious. There is great light and a view from every room, golden hardwood floors, both lanai and indoor dining, an open kitchen to die for, Island artwork and furniture - and complete privacy. Yet, we can access every part of the Island on a day trip and pop up to Kona within the hour. There are interesting walks and historic sights everywhere and Two Step, a world famous snorkeling destination, is a ten minute drive away. Beth and Dave are gracious, friendly and welcoming; they can answer all our questions and steer us to the places less traveled. They've designed their home with beauty and comfort in mind and maintain it perfectly. We love staying here!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
