Set on a powdery pink-sand beach overlooking the turquoise waters of the Atlantic, Kataluma is a grand 5-bedroom, 6-bath estate on Double Bay. This new and secluded 5000 sf home has two levels of living space. The upper level features a vast open-plan great room with 20 feet of sliding glass doors for stunning beach and ocean views. At night, this room becomes a home theater with surround-sound, VCR, CD/DVD player, and 10’ movie screen with film library. The lower level of Kataluma features a second living room, second full kitchen/dining area, and a recreation room with 8-foot slate pool table, poker table, large-screen satellite TV, and live performance stage.
Outside, luxuriate in our heated pool, lounge in our shady beachside tiki hut, or recline in the hammock or canopy swing. Explore our offshore cays and reefs with our kayaks and snorkel gear. Then grill and enjoy your days catch on our variety of oceanfront and poolside patios and decks.
Kataluma's master bedroom suite, Hibiscus, has a 10’ sliding-panel glass door which provide views of the turquoise ocean water, two cays and pink sand beach. The glass doors open onto an ocean front patio furnished with chaise lounge chairs for relaxing. The furnishings of Hibiscus Suite are British Colonial and the white linens give the clean, crisp feel of a relaxed beach setting. The master bath is complete with two hand-carved marble vessel sinks, a large open shower area, and an ocean-view spa tub.
The upper level of Kataluma has four bedroom suites, including the Master. Each has its own name and design theme (Hibiscus, Gecko, Lotus, Frangipani) hand-carved on the wooden transom over the door. The doors are recessed into hallways to give private entry off the main living areas. Each bedroom has its own private bath, each with a unique design and style. The lower level of Kataluma has a fifth bedroom furnished with two full (double width) bunk beds. It sleeps 4.
Kataluma’s gourmet kitchen will satisfy the most demanding chef. A 15-foot center island gives plenty of space for preparing your in-home meals. Or have our cook do it for you! The stainless steel Bosch appliances include a glass cook top with downward draft ventilation, wall oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer and dishwasher to facilitate the needs of guests, chefs and staff. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the accoutrements needed to prepare your culinary delights including food processor, blender, toaster, coffee-maker, rice maker, crock pot, and a selection of spices and seasonings. Just outside the kitchen area is a large built-in “Jenn-Aire” gas cooking grill for your barbecue and grilling selections.
If you wish to dine outside, there is a convenient deck situated just outside the kitchen’s sliding glass doors, so that you can enjoy views of the swimming pool, garden area, the sprawling coconut forest and spectacular sunsets. At night, candle-illuminated carved stone lanterns by the swimming pool reflect off the pool’s glistening water.
A unique feature of the home is the 1600-square-foot ground level space with second living room, full kitchen, and recreation room with 8-foot slate pool table, poker table, large-screen TV, and live performance stage. If privacy is required, or if people want to get away from the main living areas, lower Kataluma is a great place to go.

We just returned from Kataluma and had a blast! Our group included two sets of grandparents and 3 children (9 total). The house was plenty big for us and had all the conveniences. All previous reviews are spot on, except that the beach in front of the house was a little rockier than I gathered from previous posters. Regardless, very close on either side of the house is plenty of beautiful sandy beach. On windy days, the pool was perfect for the kids. We had Manassa cook for us 2 of the nights during our visit and it was unbelievable. I have tasted a lot of conch fritters over the years and his take the prize! He also made a pineapple cheesecake that was to die for! Kataluma is in a central location for exploring Eleuthera. We mostly went north. A rental car is a must (we used Big Daddy's and they were nice to deal with). However, be aware that driving on Eleuthera at night is quite difficult due to the winding roads and total darkness! Harbour Island was a nice day trip, but made us appreciate our solitude at Kataluma. Ten Bay beach was beautiful, as was Gaulding Cay Beach. All of our dining experiences were great. Tippy's is a must see and has great food. Sunset is lacking in decor, but the view and food were excellent. By far, the best food we had (except from Manassa) was at The Rainbow Inn. All and all, this Kataluma was everything we wanted and Eleuthera was great!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Our family group of 13 staying at Kataluma in November 2012. We had two seniors, a university student and two families each with 3 young children (between 1 and 6). It was a perfectly simple and relaxing time. The house is right on a beautiful Atlantic Side beach and we had it to ourselves all week long. At high tide it was a bit rough for the younger children but at those times we could drive 5 minutes over to a beach on the calmer Caribbean side or enjoy the pool in the garden behind the house. At low- medium tide it was great for an assortment of activities including snorkelling, kayaking and playing in the shallow tide pools. A rental car is essential and having one allowed us to visit the island from tip to tip during our week. Hilights were the visits to Harbour Island and French Leave Beach. We enjoyed excellent meals out at Tippy's and the Beach House and in between had all our meals prepared at the house. We hired a cook, Brenda, who did a terrific job and made the week that much more relaxing for us. For those who love to cook the kitchen is spacious and well-equipped with a good BBQ outside. At night we enjoyed the stars and the breeze. Several nights we watched movies on the home theater system or played board games. When we arrived we were met by the House Manager Kirk who was friendly and helpful. He was available during the week when we had questions or needs. We would definitely do it again! Thanks to the Cartwrights for making their excellent home available to us.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our stay at Kataluma was wonderful. The island of Eleuthera is slow and leisurely. No large hotels, no chain restaurants...perfection. We stayed in June 2012. The communication before the trip was excellent. We rented cars and were met at the airport (rental care is a must). House was maybe 20 minutes from airport, 15 min from main town Governors Harbour where the grocery and restaurants were. It was a perfect location mid-island. Kataluma was perfect. It sat on a hill overlooking the sand and all you saw was the ocean and horizon through the back wall of windows. Our beach was powder sand and an area of rocks, of which my kids adored looking through the tide pools. We had great snorkeling right there on our beach and actually had dolphins come check us out one afternoon! We often took out the two kayaks that were provided. We had kids ranging from 6-19 and everyone had a great time. We explored several different beaches during the week. The pool was great for the afternoons. House had everything we needed, cooking utensils, great appliances and a fantastic grill. It was a fabulous stay and the beach is breathtaking. It's private and on a quiet island which was just what we were hoping for. [COPIED VERBATIM FROM TRIPADVISOR FLIPKEY]Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Our family spent 2 glorious weeks at Kataluma. The house and grounds are lovely and relaxing. It is especially nice to have the combination of the beach and the pool and all the fine amenities that are part of this beautifully appointed home. We like to cook at home and enjoy the fresh seafood that we can buy straight off the docks in Gov Harbour and Tarpon Bay...and so the wonderfully outfitted kitchen at Kataluma made that all the more enjoyable. We have rented 3 other very deluxe properties in Eleuthera and Kataluma is without question the finest. [COPIED VERBATIM FROM FLIPKEY]Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/3

We took our mother to Kataluma for her 82nd birthday, and as she absorbed her first view of the ocean from the front deck of the house, I asked her what she thought. She actually couldn't find her voice for a moment, and then managed a whisper: "I'm overwhelmed." As were we all. An exquisite property, beautifully (and thoughtfully) furnished, with a layout that affords both tremendous privacy for every guest, and a gorgeous common space. Very comfortable beds, well-appointed bathrooms (one in every bedroom!), superb appliances. Situated about halfway down the island, within easy commute of several airports, grocery stores and some very good restaurants. Surrounded by palm trees, it's ultra-private and yet easily-accessible. Out-of-this world ocean views. You're at home the moment you step through the door. Anna was a gracious long-distance host, and her on-site staff (we met both Martin the property manager, and Violet the housekeeper) were just as welcoming. We made full use of the terrific information binder left for guest use, and spent our days exploring the stunning beaches. Our nights were given over to family meals and movies, the latter projected on the large screen in the living room. Kataluma looks like one of those places that's always featured in Condé Naste traveler... utterly stunning, and totally beyond anyone's reach. Far from it. For the value received, the house is an absolute steal... and as close to paradise as you're likely to get. [COPIED VERBATM FROM FLIPKEYDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

This was the most beautiful place I have ever been to. So clean, so quiet, so relaxing and so private. The home,Kataluma Villa, was spectacular. You never have to leave the house. It has everything you need. This home will accommodate up to 12 people comfortably. two-level, secluded residential home is a comfortable, upscale family style home/retreat, with full central air conditioning, a solar-heated swimming pool, convenient open floor plan on the main level, with large dining and living areas. The lower level has another living room with home theater, a 2nd full kitchen/dining area and entertainment/recreation/billiard room. The snorkeling, free diving, fishing is awesome! The beaches have pink sand and are so pristine. This is a once in a lifetime experience and I wish everyone could experience it. [COPIED VERBATIM FROM FLIPKEY]Did you find this review helpful? My family and I traveled to Kataluma to "get away" for a week. Kataluma was perfect for that. Kataluma is a beautiful, peaceful home with lots of great ammenities (swimming pool, theatre room for watching movies, game room with pool table, grill for cooking out, kayaks, etc.). The owners really know how to take care of you. The view of the ocean and beach from the living room and two of the bedrooms is undescribable. The beaches were gorgeous, the food on the island was great, the people were friendly, and we just had a great time. Since we were there for a week, we explored both the northern and southern ends of the island. These day trips were like miniture vacations in themselves. The beaches were very quite and relaxing. Since the island is only 2 miles wide, we experienced both sunrises and sunsets over the ocean (it was great). I highly recommend Kataluma as a place to take the family and enjoy yourself.
