Castine house description
A vacation at our cottage in Castine, Maine provides the perfect venue for a wide-ranging experience associated with coastal Maine, the famed Pine Tree state. From beaches to mountains, family reunions, exploring, sightseeing, just plain relaxing - your can enjoy it all from this location.
Castine, a town of 1300 with a rich historical legacy, is located on the shores of Penobscot Bay in Maine. It has been a summer boat destination for decades; Castine Harbor is in close proximity to many quiet anchorages, some of which are overlooked by our charming cottage.
The town is home to the Maine Maritime Academy, a premier institution engaging in the training of officers for the US maritime service and related industries. Waterfront activities include superb sea kayaking instruction and daytime sailing cruises. Nearby is the chance to see local lobstermen and learn how this shellfish is harvested.
A choice of natural terrains for hiking, biking, and wildlife observation abounds from Witherle Woods to Holbrook Island Sanctuary, a state park which sponsors frequent summer programs. In addition, the famed Fort Knox and its celebrated Penobscot River Narrows Observatory offer visitors sweeping panoramic views of the area from the recently completed 420' high observatory directly over the river. The fort, built in the mid 19th century, is complete and its history unfolds through daily tours.
Dining choices are plentiful in the vicinity for casual as well as elegant dining. The Pentagoet is known for skillfully prepared dinners as well as its sophisticated afternoon high teas. The Bagaduce Lunch is a regional fixture celebrated as one of the best choices for prepared seafood in Maine. Live lobsters can be obtained dockside on the Castine waterfront at Eaton's for a home meal. And don't forget The Breeze, a waterfront eatery with the perfect lobster roll or crab roll.
A walking tour of the village is highlighted by the presence of descriptive signs and placards which identify many sites of historical military engagements while also detailing the occupation of the town by five nations during the colonial period. One can visit the Wilson Museum with its Indian and Oceanic collections and historic Perkins house, and the Castine Historical Society where examples of both literature and painting of local authors and artists are displayed.
Castine is a short drive from the celebrated Penobscot Maritime Museum in Searsport and Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor. Along the way there are endless opportunities to stop at antique and craft shops where artisans offer the best of Maine made products.
Maine's beautiful sunsets are directly viewed from Wadsworth Cove, where you can enjoy the town's saltwater swimming beach. Further recreation is fostered by the tennis courts and 9-hole golf course available to visitors at the Castine Golf Club in the village center. On the town common, there is a weekly farmer's market, occasional band concerts and summertime church suppers and craft fairs. The Witherle Library, also on the common, prepares summer programs for children, and generously affords visitors the chance to borrow books and audio materials without charge.
Come and enjoy your vacation here with the best Maine has to offer.

Charming and comfortable, great location!
Charming and comfortable, great location!
The home was spotlessly clean; all the photos are as accurate as possible, but don't really do the home or view justice. The location is ideal: easy short drive (or run!) into Castine town, beautiful woods walks or quaint beach. Also within easy drive of numerous Blue Hill peninsula attractions, and every imaginable type of restaurant. Child and pet friendly Owners were amazing and we hope to return next summer ~ we would highly recommend this home!!

Spectacular quiet retreat!!
Spectacular quiet retreat!!
We've stayed here every Summer for many years with our little dog. We love the casual, comfortable feel of the place and the spectacular water views from the newly renovated open kitchen/living/dining areas. Our favorite parts of the house are the wonderful porches both covered and uncovered where we can grill, read, have dinner, play games and enjoy amazing views of the water, fields, and hillsides in the distance. The big back yard and open fields behind the house provide great spaces to relax with the dog or have a lobster dinner at the picnic table. We always enjoy our time at the beautiful beach near the house and we really love being "set off" a bit from the town of Castine... yet being close enough to take in town walks, enjoy the Witherle Woods trails, Dyce's Head lighthouse, or kayak trips out of the harbor with all its' beautiful scenery...Day trips in the area are plentiful but the best part is always returning to the comfort of the house and its special views and serenity!

Year Purchased: 1997
About the owner: Matthew has enjoyed summers on the Penobscot Bay since he was a child and his family visited annually. Merry's early experience with Maine took her to Monhegan Island, where she quickly learned to love the fog and sea. Both of them were very happy to find this delightful house perfectly situated in Castine. They have enjoyed many summers there.
Why the Owner Chose Castine:
The perfect location on Penobscot Bay with plenty of opportunities for fun and easy access around the Blue Hill peninsula.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The view from the living room is what makes our house great! We can see down the way to the upper part of Castine Harbor, where our boat the OWL was moored. The daily changes of tide and wind and water and boats keep us constantly enjoying the view.
