Kalamazoo was incorporated in the 1830s and is a grand old town with modern artistic flair; we were named one of the 'Cool Cities' in Michigan in 2008! Our area, called West Main Hill, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city-- famous Henderson Castle, built in the 1870s, is across the street from us. The neighborhood is tree-lined and has curvilinear streets that are a joy to walk or bike. The city has fine and casual dining, good local shopping and unique boutiques in the pedestrian-friendly downtown; a lovely farmer’s market on Wednesdays and Saturdays; a Nature Center and the KalHaven trail for walking/biking; many summer music and other festivals downtown (check out the Arcadia Festival Site for goings-on!), antiquing, a terrific central Library----- basically all the necessities you’d need for a delightful stay. We are a three minute walk from Kalamazoo College’s beautiful Georgian quadrangle. We are 30 minutes east of Lake Michigan, and the lovely beach at South Haven. We’re 50 minutes from Grand Rapids, Michigan’s largest city which is also fun to explore; we’re 2.5 hr. drive from Chicago. Local highlights to visit also include Saugatuck (a great artist’s area on the coast of Lake Michigan, a 45 minutes drive), Grand Haven further north; and the arable land of SW Michigan with its vast orchards and wine growers. There’s also the Chocolate Garden in Coloma, MI which has the best truffles on the planet! ;-)

A beautiful house, very friendly owner, great location. The house was very spacious and had great decor and many awesome gadgets. The backyard was spacious, porch was great in the morning, and the patio/deck was nice to sit out on in the early evening and relax. Elaine was very accommodating and friendly. We rented this home in a bad circumstance, but staying here was like a retreat. It is in a great neighborhood, it has all the comforts of home, and they have a beautiful garden throughout the yard. It is just beautiful. The many treasures around the home was a big thrill for us too.

Owner response: We're so honored to have had the chance to meet this family, who came to us in dire need but were able to relax close to their loved one in hospital. THANK YOU for renting our home and taking such good care of it while there! And we'd be so delighted to have you back some day-- your courage and positive outlook were affecting. Take care, and prayers and good wishes for continued recovery for your gal!

The owners were very nice and helpful. The location was great, just down the street was a Castle that was on a cemetary and it was gorgeous at night. Very quite neighborhood. The house was very clean. It was nice to be able to wash clothes for the rest of the trip and not worry about if you had enogh clothing. I even baked a raspberry pie before we left for the rest of our trip. All the amenties of being at home. Master bedroom was great with the 100% cotton sheets my husband said that it was very comfortable. There were thousands of books if you wanted to read.

Owner response: Thanks Bette and family, thanks so much for your helpful review. We're glad you took advantage of the book-or-rama, it comes from having two academics in the house ;-)...there are even book shelves hidden (bet you didn't find the ones behind the foyer door in the front...lol) Wishing you well in all your travels, have a happy Autumn and we hope to have you back in Kalamazoo someday! My family and I had the pleasure of staying in this wonderful home for a weekend. The house is beautifully furnished, charming, and obviously loved by its owners. The home is warm and welcoming. We made sure to take advantage of the fantastic wrap-around porch as well as the deck out back. The owners were a pleasure to communicate with. We would love to return on our next visit to Kalamazoo. Thank you Elaine and John!

Owner response: We so enjoyed having you! And thank you for leaving our home in such meticulous shape, what a delight to return to so little work :-)... We are so happy to receive good reviews from our guests, because we expend much effort to please our renters and make sure all of their needs are met. Thank you also for your good communication over email and text-- much appreciated! Elaine and John
We did not have a good experience with this property from the start .we paid for the house on the fourth of July and never got info on the house until July 14 and never did receive any type of rental agreement . We arrived to find bushes had over taken the drive way to the extent I could not drive my 1/2 ton truck up it with out getting scratches. After a couple of attempts I was able to open the lock box , no big deal , then came the door with the three locks. The two dead bolts unlocked fine . The knob lock was one where I tried until frustrated , gave my wife a try then my seventeen year old son . Then finally as my wife was trying to reach the owner I was able to get the door unlocked . It was like picking the lock ever time we returned to the house. The houses décor seemed a lot more darker and depressing then appeared in the pictures. The house was very warm even with the air conditioner to the extent it was impossible to sleep in the master bedroom with out a ceiling fan. Which resulted in my son sleeping downstairs and my wife and I sleeping on a fold out couch . We have rented houses several times before through vrbo with little to no complaints , nothing worth a bad remark in a review , but the other houses was furnished and ready for you to make them your own. I was disappointed to see all the closets and dressers full of clothes except two small drawers in the dresser . Even more to see other peoples personal belongings , used soap , shampoo, sponge in the shower . Then its the same thing with the frig , its full of someone else used condiments and food to where there is no space for guest to put any type of food or drink . the owners denied that this is there full time resident , if so that just makes the frig even more disgusting . We had the home rented for five days , we left after two nights . Do to being laid off in 2010 we had not taken a vacation for the last four years and with my son joining the service next year I wanted to have one more good vacation memory . I guess what I got was a lesson on what to ask the owner of our next vacation rental .

Owner response: It is disheartening to receive a review like this, as we were largely unaware of our guests' unhappiness until after they had left. We are deeply sorry they did not enjoy their stay at our home; we would certainly have tried to make their stay a better one, but did not have the opportunity to try. We did have problems with the presentation of the kitchen fridge as, owing to oversights on the part of our new prep person, three items were left within that should not have been. Our guests will find a fridge well-stocked with basics, as we have been told how convenient it is for guests not to be required to purchase these. Regarding bath items, we do indeed take pride in providing our guests quality shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel in pump dispensers, as well as liquid dispensers at each sink. These areas, like the rest of the home, are meticulously clean and welcoming. Our front master bedroom contains a mule chest, the top of which (four drawers) is open for guests; as is the center of our built-in closet, and the large triangulate corner closet for larger items. Our second bedroom has a complete antique armoire open for your use. We have also checked the bottom entry lock to alleviate any possible difficulties in opening the home. Alas these guests arrived in the worst heat-wave of the summer with daily temps in the 90s. But this home is serviced by a 3-ton Trane, and judicious closing of the lower level vents sends the cool air into the second level. We wish they had contacted us the first night with their discomfort. We feel these guests were simply looking for a different experience than we offer and perhaps did not read our descriptions of the home with sufficient care. This is not a ‘vacation rental’ with generic furnishings and a sterile atmosphere. It is our home of many years, where we reside when we are not travelling or living elsewhere. We have lavished our time and assets on this beloved Victorian, of which we ourselves are merely the temporary stewards. It thus has acquired the character and ‘lived in’ air to which these guests objected so strongly. We try to make all this clear in our description of our home on VRBO and we repeat it here. We hope potential visitors will balance this review against the others our guests have given us, which have all been positive. We are constantly striving to improve the experience of staying at our home, and we hope that our future guests will agree that we are succeeding.

Our family had such a wonderful time. The house was very cool, the boys loved to go up the back staircase and down the front, then up again. everything was great and easy to use, though I did have to ready the TV remote directions a couple of times before I figured it out (probably more an issue with me than the instructions). Very nice interiors, arts & crafts style furnishings, which I loved. We slept on the sofa bed all week, which I was nervous about, but it was very comfortable. Lots of nine foot Chestnut doors and trim, very nicely decorated. I recommend it highly.

Owner response: Thanks Matt! John and I were so delighted to have you here and you left our home in tip-top shape: so appreciated. Your comment about the boys running up the front stairs and down the back--- our own nieces and nephews have done this for years and the littlest ones still do :-)....the house lends itself to exploration. Thanks also for noting the bed pullout coziness: we've been extra careful to make that a comfy experience and purchased an expensive topper to make it a great night's sleep, just like our other Queen. We hope your all consider us again if your'e ever back in Kalamazoo, and thanks for your great comments! Cheers, Elaine and John

Warm and Inviting
Our stay at this beautiful house was comfortable, warm and inviting. The property owners were helpful and gracious. I would have liked better signage of the address from the street as finding the house in the snow and in the dark was a challenge.

Owner response: I shined up the brass house numbers so they now gleam even in the gloom :-)--- thanks so much for reminding me! We also have plans to place the house numbers on a landscape feature close to the street. Again we're so pleased you had a nice time at our home-- please consider us in future Kalamazoo visits! A Relaxing Escape
A Relaxing Escape
When we read the description of this house, it almost sounded too good to be true, but the reality exceeded our expectations in every way. The house is gorgeous and lovingly maintained. And the kitchen truly had everything, from a selection of premium teas to a milkshake maker. We enjoyed home cooked meals on the balcony and kicked back as comfortable as if we were in our own home. We had a thoroughly relaxing stay.

Charming house in a very nice neighborhood! We spent four days in Kalamazoo, visiting friends and going to the beach at Lake Michigan. This house is an ideal alternative to a stay in a hotel. The kids liked it a lot as well. Cool and very helpful renters.

About the owner: My husband and I are both Michiganders, one from the Detroit/Dearborn area the other from Lansing. We're academic types into history and religion; the hubby attended MSU and Yale, and I attended Kalamazoo College and the University of Chicago. We love living in Kalamazoo and part-time at our pied-a-terre in Chicago!
Why the Owner Chose Kalamazoo:
We married and moved into 1325 Grand because we looooove older homes with lots of character and redolent with history. This place hasn't disappointed us....we're always 'lovin' on the house,' because these homes are living and breathing treasures that need care and attention. Kalamazoo is a city which also has 'town' qualities: unique areas, an interesting past history; it's also a College town with all the culture and interest inherent in that quality-- this is just a great place to live and work.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Folks, we're talking Queen Anne eye-candy here. Gorgeous hardwood, thick trim and built-ins, a great fireplace surround; a lovely wrap-around porch with seating for tea, plus a sun deck upstairs fitted out with a high-end umbrella table with comfy chairs! There is a small triangulate park that separates us from the larger street, so you get to look at more trees and beautiful homes on either side and in front. We're also close to downtown-- great location!
