Woodstock house description

RUSHING WATER HAVEN, is a home nestled in the Catskill Mountains, surrounded by acres of woodland, at the end of a private road, with Mount Tremper rising behind it. Built of pine and cedar high alongside a turbulent stream, it combines the fairy tale charm of a tree house with the open lines of a contemporary structure or zendo. Large windows and skylights frame views of woods and sculpted grounds in every direction. It was created in 1979 by an award-winning illustrator and an architect who became a well-known Woodstock artist and photographer. A rare three-story tower, it features a bedroom on the top floor; at the entry mid-level (see photos), an equipped kitchen, dining area and full bath; and below, almost at stream level, a spacious living room complete with a wood burning stove, comfortable seating areas, skylights and views. On each level, sliding doors with screens open onto open-air decks overlooking the stream, offering views of sun-dappled woods, the sparkling stream below, and the zig zag of water falling down the mountainside opposite. In winter, watch the snow fall through hickory, hemlock and pine trees. The deck off the living room is a screened in porch. Visually entrancing with the sound of water tumbling over boulders & rocks – the near edge of wilderness, it is beautiful in any season. From the pine refuge of the house, one can hear the rush of the brook in every room. The property is bordered on two sides by the Catskill watershed preserve and converging streams. It includes a sunny expanse of open lawn, ringed by woods, further ensuring privacy. In winter, it is equally private, with vistas of surrounding mountains. Adjacent to the house is a three season guest studio, and its ground level sunny deck is bordered by garden and lawn. Both structures feel spacious and uplifting. From early Spring to November, rental guests of the house have access to the studio and laundry room. The studio's additional queen-sized bedroom, daybed, and bath is available and included with all rentals, except in Winter. In warmer months, lounge on the sunny studio deck in an array of outdoor furniture; picnic on the lawn or at the picnic table and benches; the studio contains a refrigerator, toaster oven, electric kettle and induction plate, to make dining al fresco outdoors even easier. There is a charcoal grill.

Ideally suited for a couple looking for a place of beauty to relax, meditate, or work away from home, Rushing Water Haven casts a spell. An idyllic romantic retreat, for writers or artists, or anyone looking to recharge, it may just provide the inspiration or creative motivation you are seeking.

Located in the hamlet of Willow, the house is just fifteen minutes from Woodstock. As one of the oldest arts colonies and culturally rich small towns in America, Woodstock (of which Willow is part) is situated in one of the most dramatic wildlife areas in the Northeast. As a vacation destination, it is a perfect home base from which to explore the Catskills and wider Hudson Valley region.
Contact us for additional ideas for the time you are renting. There are many seasonal festivals, including the Woodstock Film Festival in October. Spectacular hiking trails (maps provided), biking, horseback riding, fly fishing, tubing on the Esopus River are nearby, along with other countless Catskill and Hudson Valley attractions. Visit Phoenicia, 'one of top ten coolest small towns in America' for pancakes at Sweet Sue's, and don't miss the Woodstock Animal Sanctuary; farmers markets, open until November; historic Hudson River towns of Saugerities, Rhinebeck and Kingston all within easy reach featuring antique shops and historic sites. Consider Bardavon Performance Center, or Dutchess County Fair Grounds events. Take a hike around stunning Ashokan Reservoir, and witness soaring Catskill eagles. Climb magical Overlook Mountain for breathtaking views. The Mount Tremper Arts Center offers contemporary dance in Summer. There are frequent talks by renown spiritual teachers; yoga, Zen and Tibetan tradition monasteries, healing massage, and spa treatments, yard sales, and garden tours; world class music events of all kinds; historic Maverick Center open-air recitals; theater, and gallery shows; and everywhere--the option of great food and interesting people should you wish to explore and stop along the way. But you may just want to stay at home, enjoy the hammock alongside the stream; or nap in the sun.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: First came to the area in the early 80's, invited by a friend who was organizing a theater and wanted to offer me a job, but I was not ready to leave New York City. Later I began to attend monastery retreats in the Catskills, and from Zen Mountain Monastery in Mount Tremper I heard a 'Rivers and Mountains' talk which moved me, as did the scent and feel of the place I came to associate with it. Later a close friend and her husband obtained a house in Woodstock and began to commute from the City. I came to visit. At an important juncture in my life, I knew I needed to be closer to nature, and began a search for a weekend house, within a manageable distance, to go to as often as possible.

Why the Owner Chose Woodstock:
Without a doubt, the moving water featured in my description. I saw the property online first. The photos did not do it justice (neither do mine. I am in process of updating!) --but something spoke to me. My realtor tracked it down after I spotted it online. It was on a list of properties to view. As soon as I emerged from the car at the entrance to the bowl of the property, its scattered majestic trees on the open lawn, reaching up, and heard the rush of the stream, I knew this was it. It didn't matter to me what the house was like, but happily the house struck me as beautiful and beautifully designed. It reminded me of other places I had loved and more. A zendo, a medieval keep, a wooded home in a fantasy or fairytale. The house is really about the natural beauty outside. Being in, one is always looking out.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Whereever one sits in the house, and there are many comfortable places to curl up with a magazine or book, inside or out --whether stretched out on the couch downstairs or rocking in a chair on one of the upper decks--one is often stunned by the beauty of the surrounding woods as light shifts; flowers move in the breeze, deer silently cross the lawn, or witnessing the play of birds and squirrels; the sudden dramatic appearance of an owl. It is a great place to sleep deeply. There are starry nights, and watch for bright moonlight spilling across the lawn, silvering the woods.
