My wife and I (in our 60's) thoroughly enjoyed our one week visit in this wonderful Casita. We have visited San Diego and North County many times (all at VRBO's) and this visit was unquestionably one of the best as it exceeded all of our high expectations. The Casita listing and photos are accurate in every respect and the property is secure, charming, spotless, fully equipped and in close proximity to everything we needed to enhance our "family visit" vacation. Coffee shops and grocery stores are within walking distance, some 2 or 3 blocks down the street. Balboa park is within a 30 minute easy walk. Restaurants are also in close proximity and our favorite, Farm House Café Restaurant, is within easy walking distance; comparing most favorably to other "drive-to" restaurants down town and in La Jolle. The owners (Lynne and Jim) were always available to answer any questions and made our visit extremely pleasant and inviting as a "home away from home". Their personal attention, friendship and professionalism was highly appreciated by us. We highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to explore San Diego and the surrounding area as it is in close proximity to all major highways. The micro University Heights area itself is a unique and vibrant community which is highly desirable and both easy interesting to explore on foot. We plan to return to the Casita on our next family visit to San Diego.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway.
Owner response: We highly appreciate the spotlight you shine on our Casita and its surroundings John and Di. We love your description of University Heights as a "unique and vibrant community". We look forward to your next family visit.

My husband and I stayed here for our third anniversary and didn't want to leave. The casita is clean, comfortable, private and modern. All the appliances, furnishings and decor are modern and just as the pictures show. The owners are friendly and helpful but give you privacy and space. The amenities were excellent -- the owners even had freshly baked cookies waiting for us when we arrived and sparkling cider in the refrigerator (they offered wine, but we don't drink alcohol). You have your own parking spot right out the front door and access to the back yard. We spent every night sitting on a bench under the stars talking while enjoying their beautiful backyard (complete with a rock waterfall). Not only that, but the casita is located in a great area with restaurants close by. We rented a car and didn't use a tank of gas the whole 5 days we were there and we saw all the sights: the San Diego Zoo, USS Midway, La Jolla Cove, Torrey Pines State Park, Cabrillo National Park etc. I'd definitely suggest this casita -- it's a gem and we'll be back!Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you Keri and Lance for your great review. Reading your words brought a smile to our faces as our goal was achieved in creating an atmosphere of peace and relaxation. We appreciate you noting the cleanliness and comfort of the Casita as well as the convenient location. We're also pleased you saw a lot of the natural sights San Diego has to offer as well as some of the most popular sights. Lynne and I truly hope to see you again.

We absolutely loved this Casita! It is impeccably appointed and wonderfully decorated. With grocery stores, a landromat, and tourist sights nearby, it is perfect if you have a car. Our young son also enjoyed our stay and said he would miss the little house. It only took twelve minutes to arrive from the airport! Best of all, the wonderful owners! They were kind and friendly, and we truly enjoyed our chats with them. I would definitely recommend this rental without hesitation.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: We are very happy that Aaron got his Legoland wish and pleased that the location of the Casita worked out well for you and Bobby and all the things you wanted to do in San Diego. Deborah, we wish you and your family the best in life and truly hope to see you again be it Oregon or San Diego. Helen at the laundromat says Hi.

We spent several days at the Casita. Jim and Lynne are very gracious hosts. They have thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable, easy and welcoming. The casita is a beautifully appointed suite that has its own parking space. It is very central to many places that tourists would like to visit. There are a variety of restaurants in the neighborhood that are of walking distance to the casita. The casita is spotless and has all the amenities one would want in their home away from home. We had a very enjoyable stay and look forward to an opportunity in the future to stay there again. Thanks so much Jim and Lynne.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you Quentin and Tina for highlighting the Casita features, its central location, easy parking, and the local hood. We hope we make it to Vancouver and pop in to say hello. Jim & Lynne

I stayed in this Casita for 1 month. I can not say enough Good things about the experience. The casita was located in a wonderful Neighborhood, a few blocks from great restaurants and shops but quiet. It was immaculate And had everything you could possibly need. Jim and Lynne were amazing and I was also greeted with brownies upon my arrival. I wound up moving to a cottage in this Neighborhood because I loved it so much. Highly recommend!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you for plugging the great restaurants and shops in our hood Dani. Now that you are our neighbor, we hope to see you around the campus. We wish you the best in your new San Diego adventure.

We were extremely pleased with this rental. In town to visit family, we really enjoyed the University Heights neighborhood and our charming casita. This studio apartment is clean, spacious, carefully designed, and furnished with everything new instead of castoffs. It has access to a pleasant garden and the only drawback is the small bathroom size. A parking place is provided by the front door and access is short and totally level from the parking area into the apartment. The neighborhood is quiet and convenient, with cafes (Monica's, Twiggs), restaurants (Park Place) and a laundromat three blocks away, very pleasant for walking. The hosts could not have been more welcoming, inviting us to join a party they were giving in the garden. The location is convenient to Balboa Park, Mission Bay, and the mega-shopping malls in Mission Valley. We plan to return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car.

This place was just as advertised. We enjoyed our stay very much. Everything was clean and well maintained, and Jim and Lynn were very congenial and helpful to us. The freshly-baked cookies and bottle of wine made us feel welcome immediately. It's is a great location, with lots of interesting little restaurants, coffee shops, and taverns within a 2-3 block walk. And the view from the end of the street, 1/2 block away is spectacular. We highly recommend the Casita!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, people with disabilities.
Owner response: We're so happy you enjoyed your stay for your daughter's wedding. We hope you will return one day and the weather will be a tad warmer. We're glad you enjoyed the neighborhood merchants as well as the view over Mission Valley. Although the Casita is not on the beach, we don't have concerns about Tsunami's or flooding, and there is so much to see and do that is not far away.

We so enjoyed the casita; it is the nicest place we have rented in San Diego, and in a great location. When we arrived, Jim and Lynne welcomed us warmly and graciously, and they also contacted us during our stay to see if they could be of any help, and to make sure we were enjoying our time in San Diego. The casita is small, but it is definitely big enough to be very comfortable! It is very nicely decorated (somebody has a knack for decorating!). I really enjoy it when you find pretty colors and decorations in every direction that you look! The kitchen is well appointed, with all of the amenities you would hope for, and then some. There are plenty of towels and linens available. The off-street parking is great to have, and the neighborhood is safe and quiet. Jim and Lynne had plenty of recommendations and ideas of places for us to visit during our stay, and even generously gave us some free admission passes. We were sorry not to see their dog very much, but when we did, he seemed very sweet and friendly! We hope to stay here again during future visits.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you for enjoying our Casita and pointing out the amenities as well as our neighborhood. Peanut is a senior citizen now and is not as active as she once was. We do hope you will return for more San Diego adventures and visit us again.

I enjoyed how welcoming the Casita felt, the lovely colors, the comfy bed and completely spotless! Every thought was put into making our stay wonderful. Having the private off street parking was so easy for a long weekend, many of our friends had stories of parking hunts, I'm so glad we were able to skip that in a 4 day trip. The planning and decorating of the space was inviting, excellent color choices and soft fabrics made it feel special. The owners even did some subtle sweet holiday decorating to address the season, nice touch! The full on kitchen, fully stocked was excellent too, flawless wireless helped keep all of our planning smooth too. Thanks for all the extras, the wine was amazing, we are from wine country so we know what we like and that was excellent!!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your stay and complementing the Casita decor. We're happy you pointed out the parking convenience as that can be an issue in many locations. Yes, it's nice to pull into a driveway and walk a few feet to the door without having to climb stairs. We hope to see you again in the future.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1983
About the owner: We currently live in the front house of the property and have been in our home since 1982. We found this lovely property on the way to a Charger game and couldn't resist the custom Spanish style of this 1920's era two on one. We started out renting and we were fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase the property. We were even more fortunate to be married in the back yard; all six kids and one happy St. Bernard. We both grew up elsewhere in California, but we met in San Diego and have lived in our home for 30+ years and can not imagine leaving. The back house (casita) was a rental when we bought and was kept as a rental for most of our time here. Recently, we remodeled and upgraded the cottage into the casita.
Why the Owner Chose University Heights:
We bought here because our work was nearby and schools for our children were close. We are now retired and our children have left the roost. Our home is situated right in the middle of everything that is inviting in San Diego. Neighborhood restaurants and coffee houses are within four blocks. We are very close to high-end shopping malls, the Gaslamp District downtown, Balboa Park, the Zoo, beaches, ball parks, and just 1+ hour from the beautiful and very quaint historic mountain town of Julian.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
The casita is located in a quiet neighborhood that is walking friendly and very close to freeway access in all directions as well as public transportation.
