About the owner: Chris and Carole Smith.
Chris grew up in the adjacent town of Westfield, NY. His mother's parents came from Ripley, and his father's from W. Portland, NY. After buying our farm, we received the original deed and discovered that Chris's grandparents owned it in 1928! We had no knowledge of this until after we purchased it! Chris was the principle salesman at the Tamarack Club in Ellicottville, NY at Holiday Valley Ski Resort, and sold the majority of units at the Tamarack Club until his death in April of 2012. He did most of the landscaping on Beechwood Acres, and will be sorely missed.
His widow, Carole, was born and raised in the Detroit, MI area. Chris and Carole met in Key West, FL, and were married there the first time, having their son Aaron in Key West, and then son Sean in MI. They re-married after a 5 year divorce, on the same date in 1994, and moved to Ripley in January of 2007, full time. Chris attended Wittenburg University in Springfield, OH, and Carole attended Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. They met in the Florida Keys in 1977, and their lives were intertwined since then.
Why the Owner Chose Westfield: After evacuating from the Florida Keys prior to Hurricane Wilma in October of 2005, Chris was driving down Rt. 5 and he prayed to God to show him if there was a place he was supposed to be up north. Immediately after he said his prayer, he turned his head to the left to see the For Sale sign, that had not been there in July of 2005 when we had been here earlier during the summer. After going down the driveway and viewing the property, he called his wife and we inquired about the property. After purchasing it, we got the deed and discovered that his maternal grandparents had owned it in 1928. It has a very special place in our hearts and minds! The peace and serenity we felt then is even more special now, and Carole's father and other family members have all visited and feel the same special feelings of peace here. We want to share that with others.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: Even though our home is on a lakefront piece of property, the house itself overlooks a beautiful pond, where we have seen geese, ducks, swans and herons from one time to another. The gardens, trees, breezes, birds and other 'critters' that we share the property with help to make it a very unique experience. We are close to everything, but far enough away to feel set apart. The actual lakefront and beach cove are gorgeous, and can be viewed when we want to, but there are so many other vistas that are equally lovely, that there is something for everyone here.
