This lovely cottage offers guests the ability to step into the past while staying in the present. The building style and decor are right out of the 18th century, but includes all the modern amenities one would expect in a luxury hotel. We used the small kitchen mainly for making of light meals and reheating leftovers. The more rural setting away from the hustle and bustle of Williamsburg is pleasant. Guests should keep in min the free ferry schedule when planning their day's activities. Guest may want to consider spending a day on the Surry side of the river and visit the historic sights in the area. As 18th century re-enactors celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary, we throughly enjoyed our stay. Others wanting to temporarily live in the past, but not wanting to actually rough it would enjoy this cottage.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

Spend the day at Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown or Yorktown and then take the lazy ferry across the James river and drive a few miles through rural Surry County to this colonial treasure. The pictures speak for themselves as to the interior but the grounds and rural setting are also pleasant.. The kids enjoyed the great lawn, the barn and chatting with the cows in the neighbors field. This cottage is a real gem and wonderful place for a couple or small familyRecommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

We came in for Presidents Day weekend from Washington, DC and had a wonderful time. The home is absolutely beautiful and everything we needed was provided. I would absolutely recommend this vacation home to anyone looking to get away for the weekend. If I am ever back in the area I will absolutely check to see if the property is available.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

Wonderful recently built colonial-look guest cottage on the rural Surrey County property of the owners' truly old house. Cottage was designed and built and decorated with good taste and great care to be in the spirit of colonial architecture, but with very well done (mostly hidden) modern conveniences. Main floor is a large sitting/ bedroom with fireplace, with separate kitchenette and bathroom; upstairs is a finished 2nd floor library/game-room/ bedroom loft reached by steep 'colonial' stairs. We ate breakfast at the cottage, but ate our lunches and dinners while out being tourists. Not sure if one could cook a real meal in the kitchette- we didn't try. To reach Williamsburg, one must use the free public car-ferryboat service crossing the James River that operates continuously day and night, a 15 minute drive from the cottage. For us, each trip over to Jamestown and Williamsburg was very special and fun. Our 10 and 16 year old children loved it, we loved it! The daily commuters use the ferry, but it still felt like a vacation thing to us. The owners also added the cottage's surrounding gardens complete with benches and a fountain and, to the old house, an adjacent fenced large garden with little colonial outbuildings at each corner; all are so well designed that it all combined to make a wonderful setting to spend a few days. The owners are very good hosts: welcoming, very helpful when asked, out of sight the rest of the time. We're very glad we stayed here; it made a few days away from home feel even more so.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.
