We enjoyed our stay very much. Everything is as advertised and the owner's assistant who lives in the main house was extremely accommodating and welcoming. In fact, her husband helped us jump our dead car battery, a much appreciated kindness. The little home is very light and extremely well done. Our only complaint is that the kitchen table needs to be stabilized. We had great weather and the nearby Mississippi neighborhood is fun to explore. We would return again, for sure.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, adventure seekers.

We have had pretty exceptional luck with VRBO properties all around the world- I have to say that this Mississippi District cottage was one of the best experiences. We give it high marks for location, functionality, cleanliness and comfort- but the highest were earned by the owners and on-site caretakers who go above and beyond the call of duty. Location: Easy walk to Mississippi window-shopping, eating, people watching and bit longer but doable to Alberta Arts. Public transport downtown is very accessible The Space: It is such an adorable home. Hard to imagine that it is physically as small as it is-- once you're there is seems perfectly roomy. We felt very relaxed, and had no problem with our 1 year old also scooting about. If it's nice, the garden adds great space. The kitchen is clean and well-stocked: everything you would need to cook a "real" meal if going out repeatedly seems tiresome. The only thing that is not completely effortless is adjusting the dinette/sofa which I never got the full hang of. The People: Each and every interaction I had with both Stephanie (owner) and Lacey/Nathan (onsite) was prompt, respectful and always even more helpful than expected. Stephanie was very thorough with all the details and quick with answering and accommodating requests; L & N somehow managed to give us complete privacy while at the same time knowing exactly when/what we needed. Honestly, they all make up the dream-team VRBOwners. I will stay here again, and will recommend to everyone I know heading that way.... Thanks!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Just spent 2 weeks in this wonderful cottage while visiting family in Portland for the holidays, and we truly enjoyed this little "home away from home". It is a beautifully designed and outfitted space, with remarkable, thoughtful details throughout. The kitchen is very well equipped, the washer/dryer was a real bonus for our long visit, and the bed is extremely comfortable. Loved the great light in the cottage from all the windows and skylights. We had prompt responses to our questions from both the owners and onsite manager. We will definitely stay here again!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Delightful compact living with an art flair. The place was well located for restaurants and getting onto the freeway. The area in which the accommodation was located was nice and quiet. The accommodation was well supplied with linen and consumables. The only minor detail was the lack of cereal bowls and tackling the dining table when converting it to a bed. Other than that, it was fabulous and we recommend it highly.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: As fate would have it, Sam and Stephanie first met as neighbors in Southeast Portland. Sam, from rural Wisconsin with a degree in film and photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, met Stephanie who was about to embark on a design career in 2003. With a passion for music, architecture, and the arts, the pair sought to create a home for themselves in the dynamic city of Portland. Eager to start their lives together and willing to invest sweat equity, Stephanie and Sam purchased the main house at 705 North Humboldt Street in fixer condition before tying the knot in 2005. After a comprehensive DIY renovation and the birth of their first child in 2010, the ever-optimistic couple embarked on yet another project- employing Harding Construction, they demolished what was an unsalvageable garage to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). Stephanie, with her design background, originally envisioned the building to comfortably accommodate her parents and inlaws. It was only in time that the project intentions expanded to accommodate visitors to the city they had come to love- specifically a short-term vacation rental. Among many personal touches, this project showcases two of Stephanie's emerging product lines: the Topo Collection for Clayhaus Ceramics (the 3D ceramic wall tile used in the kitchen, fireplace surround, and stair risers), and Archipelago Tile- the patterned cement tile flooring installed throughout the first floor and exterior stoops.
Why the Owner Chose Mississippi District:
Sam and Stephanie immediately saw the potential for a close-in, convenient location in a rapidly up and coming neighborhood. The flourishing Mississippi District has by far and away surpassed their expectations in the eight years they have called it home.
