Charming family beach house
Charming family beach house
We had a lovely weeks stay here and loved the beautiful beach on the doorstep. The house was cosy, well stocked and homely. The location was peaceful and ideally sited for day trips to many tourist highlights. We loved nearby Monterey, and Carmel and Point Los Lobos was spectacular. We managed a day trip to San Francisco and although it was a long day it was manageable. We were advised to take the BAAT in because of parking which made the trip a lot more smooth. We weren't so impressed with the town Santa Cruz. Generally a beautiful part of America and we would love to return.

This house is charming. Located in a small residential neighborhood, it is a short walk down the cul de sac and across the railroad tracks to the beach. The home is old, well equipped for a vacation, but a new mattress for the queen bed would be a welcome addition. The house has great light and we enjoyed a fire in the fireplace many evenings. Small store is within walking distance, but other shops require transportation. We loved La Selva Beach - a quiet community that welcomes visitors. Melissa is very responsive and a good landlord. Our golden retriever, Max, had a terrific time and so did we. Hope to come back next summer.

Great little beach house within a super short walk to La Selva beach. We stayed the weekend for a wedding in Aptos. It was a short stay, but very comfortable and relaxing. Much better than a hotel for seeing other family members, hanging out and watching movies at night. All set up with just the right amount of tech - super fast wi-fi and Netflix. In a charming neighborhood with the sound of the ocean waves surrounding you. Owner was very helpful and friendly. Would definitely return and stay longer next time if possible.

La Selva is a great little community. Friendly people, close to many attractions, and beautiful beaches. We spent 5 days at the house. The 4th of July was a great day with lots to do. The house is very clean and it is an easy walk to the beach. It is spacious and was plenty of room for my family of 4 and our dog. I wish the front and back yards were better cared for and more usable and the kitchen is very dated. Despite that, we would definitely return to this property. The owner was very helpful and accommodating.

I very much enjoyed my stay with my family at this Beachouse. The description and photos were spot on! It's a nice little cottage very close to the beach. We were blessed with phenomenal weather. Walking along the beach from Manresa to Rio Del Mar every morning was the highlight of my day. Then, picking up shells and watching the sunset over Capitola was the highlight of my nights. There was everything that we needed and more in the house. My family slept well every night in the comfortable beds and we watched movies nearly every night. Good selection of videos provided. I would recommend this home to anyone who's searching for a comfortable home, close to the beach, and wants a simple getaway from the hustle and bustle of life! I will definitely stay again!

The property was exactly what I needed. Close to the beach, comfortable, quiet and affordable. Not a beach mansion by any measure but a beach bungalow. Water pressure was good. Water heater was good. The kitchen was very functional. The place is great for a couple or small family.

We are 4 quilting friends who wanted a sewing, beach, girls getaway. The house was comfortable, charming and roomy for the 4 of us and all our sewing stuff. We loved the ocean view, sounds and short stroll to the beach, lots of beach ! Neighborhood is very nice. Since we cook, newer and more organized kitchen ware would have been nice but we did fine. We had a great time and would consider it again.

We had the pleasure of staying within the sounds of crashing waves in beautiful La Selva. Arrived at almost midnight after having had Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends and was able to negotiate the easily marked path by moonlight to the beach for a brisk walk with my daughter after the drive. Came back to a crackling fire my wife has made as the fireplace is working fine now. My son had me up early to explore the beach again and the convenience of it being so close is a bonus. House was clean and quaint. The kitchen is older but it is as stated in the ad. We cooked and ate breakfast and dinner there quite comfortably. Lunch was at the beach! On the contrary to past reviewer, we met all the neighbors on both sides and across the street who could not have been friendlier. Our kids played with their kids and we even went to watch their surf contest in Santa Cruz. They even brought out basketballs so my nephew could shoot baskets while his sister and my kids helped them put up Christmas decorations. Sure the yard could use some landscaping and the exterior a little TLC but we had a great time and did not go there to hang at the house. What mattered to my wife was the inside was clean, we could relax in front of the fire with a glass of wine and listen to the sound of the surf and our kids and their cousins got to share a great memory at the beach.

Great location house is a wreck
Great location house is a wreck
Stayed there for 5 days in July 2012. The street is nice and quiet and very close to the beach. The neighbors directly next door did not speak to us or wave back when we were there. We did not see any other neighbors. The house is very old and in desperate need of repairs. The windows were so old and fragile I was afraid if we closed the door to hard they would break. Some did not open others did not close. The beds were terrible OLD, OLD and OLDER. The linens were stained, old and thread bare. The extra blankets were embedded with dog hair. Almost everything in the kitchen is a least 40 years old except the fridge. I was surprised that the stove worked. The dishes are a mix of junk you would find at a bad yard sale. There is a big bubble/soft spot in the linoleum floor in the kitchen. The outside deck looked dangerous to walk on due to visable dry rot. The front and back yards were an overgrown mess. The house has a locked apartment underneath that is in disrepair. One night when I could not sleep I heard animal sounds scratching and skittering behind the wall of the larger bedroom. I was glad to leave when I found that I had rented it for one less day than expected. The owner is nice and was easy to reach but has no shame about the utter dump of a house she is renting. There is a note on the fireplace not to use it. The TV is maybe a 17 inch with no cable. The internet is extremely slow. Garage is locked and unusable. Needless to say I would not bring your loved ones to this house.

Owner response: This reviewer was very upset when they learned that the departure date they'd agreed to was a day earlier than they thought. I feel bad that they did not have a good experience as others have had staying at my property. The house is exactly as represented in the photos - it is a 1952 beach cottage overlooking the ocean, which does mean older windows, kitchen cabinets, etc., but the beds are NOT old, the linens are actually new (purchased at the beginning of this summer), and the items provided are quite nice (Denby/Dansk china, vases etc.). The renter was made aware that the fireplace was not in working condition at that time - it is working again now. I am dedicated to making the property a welcoming and pleasant vacation experience, and have provided many small touches to that end - plenty of board games, boogie boards/beach toys, wifi with access to Netflix etc., and a small video library. The beach is very close and beautiful, and the small town is quiet and neighborly. Other renters have found it to be "charming," "adorable," and a place to which they have returned.

About the owner: I spent time in La Selva Beach way back when I was in college, fell in love and when I was able to, I bought this property. We've used it as a beach house for our family and now have it available for vacation rental for others to enjoy as well... now that our kids are in college. We live about an hour away in Silicon Valley. We hope you enjoy your stay in La Selva Beach!
Why the Owner Chose Aptos:
This is an older beach cottage that retains the character of the original homes in this area. It has a great view of the ocean, and you can hear and smell it too! The home has an easement that allows renters to easily walk to the beach (Manresa State Beach) which is one of the best, widest and cleanest beaches around. It is well known as a favorite surfers beach, and has fire pits for having a campfire with smores... a great place to create memories! The village of La Selva Beach has one stop sign, a general store and a surf shop. Very quaint, quiet and a friendly community. The views from the cliff area are spectacular - and this is where couples choose to give their wedding vows.
