Wow! Where to start? From the time we arrive until the we had to leave we loved staying here. There are so many things to consider when rating this so I will describe each below and why we loved each topic. The House Spacious, clean, comfortable(especially the master bedroom bed, it was more comfortable than the bed my wife and I sleep in at our home), all of the amenities you would find in your own home plus more including washer and dryer, gas grill, full size refrigerator, pots and pans, utensils, dishes, microwave, gas stove/oven, double shower heads in master bath shower, double sinks, 2.5 baths, 4 bedrooms, beach gear such as beach mats, cooler, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, picnic table, banana trees, parking right in front of the house, approximately 100 feet to the sand on the beach. Location Haena, HI, Kauai. Well for those of you who have never stayed here...When a local at the car rental place asked where we stayed we told him Haena and he said, "Oh, wow! That's nice!" The reaction was much different when the people that came in after told him Lihue or Kapaa. Haena is ideal because it's very close to tunnels beach, Hanalei town and Hanalei bay, Ke'e beach, unreal hiking at Kalalau trail. There is a grocery in Hanalei to get all of your grocery needs for your stay. Again 100 feet or so to the beach from the house. Cost Very competitive cost. You could easily spend as much or more staying in a decent hotel in Kauai. Do yourself a favor and don't rent a hotel or condo. Get a house like this with a kitchen, grill, dining table, living room, patio. We loved cooking our own food at the house and saved a lot of money doing it. Overall Just writing this review makes me really want to go back. I've been to some nice places including the Bahamas, Florida, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Puerto Rico, California, Colorado, Aruba, and to Kauai before and none have compared to this trip/honeymoon at this home in Haena/North Shore, Kauai! Honestly you won't be disappointed if you book this one!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The home is beautiful and so well suited for a family. While it was just my wife and I on this visit we're already looking to schedule a time to return with our kids. The beach is very close and not crowded at all. We were looking for a quiet getaway to rest and relax. This place was perfect. The home is beautifully decorated and the open floor plan is great for family together time. We loves out stay and will return here againRecommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

The house exceeded all of our expectations! First and foremost it was impeccable and clean and its openess gives it a great feel! From the back side your view is onto the beautiful garden and mountains in the background and from the front you listen to the sound of waves crashing. The location is fantastic as you just cross the road and dive into the ocean.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Our family stayed two weeks in Hale Pulelehu'a in January of 2013. We found the property in excellent condition with a very well appointed kitchen, great bedding in all rooms and spotlessly clean. The off white interior brightens up the living spaces. Last year we stayed in a house with a natural wood interior which always seemed dark inside. We will never get enough of walking for thirty seconds and being right on one of the island's most beautiful beaches. Also a short walk to the left on the beach is the breathtaking Tunnels Beach. Take a right on the beach and you find great snorkeling and beach combing. These beaches were never crowded. We moved into Hanalei from Haena which was a huge difference being in town. The beaches on weekends were very busy. We had finicky friends stay in the guest house and they could not have been happier. Back at work now and having a hard time focusing on the task at hand. My mind is still on the North Shore of Kauai out at Haena, traveling the beach on the way to Tunnels.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family of five stayed here, and loved it. The listing doesn't make clear how close it is to the beach. Walk out your door, across the dirt road, and then go 50 yards down a bamboo-lined path. You're on a stretch of beach that's almost private. Walk down the beach 10-15 minutes to the left, and you're at the famous Tunnels Beach (great snorkeling). Drive two miles north, and you're at the end of the road (one of the best hikes in the world.) Walk down the dirt road about 8 minutes and you're at the Hanelei Beach Resort, which has a small but nice coffee shop and the Mediterranean Gourmet restaurant. The house is about a eight minute drive past the town of Hanelei, which is laid back and has numerous restaurants. Go another few minutes, and you're in Princeville, with a nice grocery store, the St. Regis, and tons of condos. The owner was professional and responsive. A great experience.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Just got back from a10 day stay and can't wait to get back! I've stayed on every island and multiple times in Kauai, but I think I finally found my favorite spot. First I would say that the description of the house and the photos are very accurate. Although I think it's even better when you see it in person. The owner was also very helpful and responsive in planning our trip. The house itself is beautiful and well designed with a large kitchen and lots of open living space. We had two families for a total of 10 people and we had plenty of room in the kitchen and living area. We also used the "tree house" which was nice as well. The tree house is detached from the main house and you can feel a little disconnected from the main house, but that can be a good thing. It's just a few steps through the yard to get to the main house. The best thing about the house is the location. It's directly across from a tree lined path to one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches I have seen on any of the islands. We spent most of our time here just swimming, snorkeling and lounging in the sun. It's also a short drive into Hanalei town or Princeville, where you can find all the amenities and recreation you need to keep everyone happy.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Our family of eight spent a week in the House of Butterflies and the experience was wonderful! The house is beautifully appointed, well maintained, open and incredibly user-friendly! The large kitchen provides whatever you need for easy cooking. The house is located steps from the beach and is a perfect spot for the boogie boards and later in the day, to take in the beautiful sunsets. The Tunnels Reef is a well known area for snorkeling and scuba diving and is less than one-half mile walk from the house. Check it out! Easy access into Hanalei and Princeville for groceries, shops and a multitude of activities. The owner of the home reflected an Aloha spirit in having available beach and surf equipment. An outdoor shower was a perfect place to step into coming from the beach. The outdoor area is set up with tables and sofas for relaxing, A perfect place for grilling the fresh fish caught that day! Our family loved our time here and hope to return! If you have a chance to spend some time on Kauai, you don't want to pass up this beautiful home!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This is a great house in which to relax and enjoy the North Shore. The house is spacious, and was very comfortable for our party of 8 (6 adults, 2 small kids). It is very clean and well maintained, with all the comforts of home. There are plenty of places to congregate upstairs (inside and on the lanai) and on the ground floor/barbecue area. We found plenty of boogie boards, beach chairs, noodles, snorkeling gear, and water shoes in the downstairs closets. The house is a fairly short walk to Tunnels; we walked there twice, once on the beach and once alongside the road. The beach route is more laborious because it's easy to sink into the sand, but it's still very manageable. Snorkeling Tunnels was a lot of fun, but we preferred the snorkeling at the beach next to the house. It was much more convenient, had plenty of interesting rock and coral formations, a nice variety of fish, turtles, and no crowds. The house is also conveniently located near Ke'e beach, which has particularly nice water access for small kids and the trailhead for the Kalalau Trail (go early to find decent parking). We recommend this house without hesitation; it is comfortable, spacious, well-stocked with essentials, and it was truly a pleasure dealing with the owner.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was our 4th trip to Kauai staying in different house and most definitely the best. This house is gorgeous. As others have noted, it was clear by how beautifully designed, clean, and well "outfitted" this house was that the owner truly cares about his property. There is a perfect spot for every person and every thing. Every year we find more to do on the island and more reasons to need to stay longer. This year it was the beach right in front of the house. By the end of our trip, we could barely tear ourselves off of it. Everything about this property was heaven on earth.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This house and location were perfect for our family gathering. We had never been to Kauai (or Hawaii for that matter) but enjoyed 7 wonderful nights at this beautiful home. The scenery is breathtaking and the proximity to the beach across the street was a huge plus. While we went to different beaches, there wasn't a day that one of us didn't go to the one across the street - it was beautiful and peaceful - a true gem. The house lacked for nothing and as another reviewer noted - feels like home. Everything you could want or need is right here including all kinds of beach necessities - chairs, towels, toys, snorkel equipment. The house is close to Hanalei and all it's offerings and we very much enjoyed being in such a non-commercial area and exploring our surroundings. Our only regret is that we didn't stay two weeks. We hope to return some day soon!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The house was excellent and exceeded our expectations. Everything had been thought of from beach chairs and towels to a full compliment of spices. All you need to do is bring some food and a pair of shorts and you are set. The location is superb...the beach access is literally right out the front door. If you want a "perfect" vacation this is the place to stay. The owner Bill was very helpful and is basically a "local" so he ensures that your vacation is exactly as you want. If you want a private setting in a beautiful location then this is the house to stay at.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The description and photos are somewhat modest, I thought the house was nicer than the photos depicted. For our family, ages 26-56 this was the perfect location. We had tons of room for our meal prepping and BBQ's. We used almost everything that was available, boogie boards, cooler and fins. We enjoyed coffee on the lanai and cocktails at the huge island style counter. The house was very clean and everything looked so well cared for that it was hard to believe we weren't the first people to use it. I would recommend this property because it was so simple to arrange and such a beautiful place. I have been to Kauai 4 times but this trip was MAGICAL. We watched the sunset from the Princeville Hotel Bar, that was surprisingly sweet. We surfed, snorkeled, swam, ran, hiked, jumped off cliffs into waterfall ponds. We took a catamaran trip around the NaPali coast. We ate "in" and had awesome wahu and ahi from the fish market but we also ate out and had really good luck except maybe once. We would wonder if there was a -------- at the house, we would look around and there it was. I can't think of anything I would change. In fact, if I bought a house I would try to emulate the set up because it was so convenient. We had 8 great nights.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I put the title in quotes because that’s all I heard all week...“This place is amazing.” It truly is. I’m at a loss to find the words to say something that has not been said in the other reviews. The front room is large and all the seats are comfortable. The bedrooms and beds are great. Everyone slept very soundly at night. The kitchen is well equipped. My daughter summed it best when she said it was obvious by the furnishings that the owner stays at the house...a lot of care went into the choices and it felt like a home. The short walk to the beach was a bonus. At Hale Pulelehu'a you are as close as you can get to the beach without being on the beach. In addition, Tunnels Beach is a 1/2 mile walk and Ke’e Beach is a short drive away. This trip was to celebrate my retirement with my family and every aspect of it was perfect. In short, this is paradise. Check out time was 10 and we sat on the balcony until 9:59:59. Oh, did I mention that this place is amazing?Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Our group of friends spent a week in this lovely North Shore home. Location is ideal to everything we wanted to do... snorkeling at Tunnels, morning runs to Ke'e beach, hiking the Napali Coast, sea kayaking and surfing. We only went out to dinner one night (Postcards Cafe - delicious!), as the home was so perfect we wanted to enjoy every minute there. The kitchen is well equipped and the nightly meal was grilled fish, fresh from Dolphins' fish markets. I've rented several homes in Kauai in the past, this was by far the best. We hope to return next year!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

We've just returned from a week at Hale O Pulelehu'a--a truly perfect stay. The house and location are both amazing. First, the house: even the great pictures here will never do it justice. Every detail--from the wide, beautiful painted-wood floors, the large gourmet kitchen, the beautiful lanai, the luxuriously comfortable beds, pillows and linens, to the adjustable lighting that accents the architectural lines and interior colors of the rooms--was glorious. And the master bathroom took my breath away--a HUGE stone-tiled open-air rainshower that made it feel like you were in a waterfall. Absolutely beautiful. The kitchen was perfectly organized with a large five-burner gas stove and all the equipment we needed, as well as two barbecues outside. A large beach-toy closet was also outside, with masks, snorkels, fins, noodles, boogie boards (indispensable!) and sand toys. Ample beach towels and excellent laundry room, too. Seven of us stayed together in the house, and we had room to spare. In short, it was absolutely heavenly. And the location: We wanted to be as close to Tunnels beach as possible, to snorkel every day. While Tunnels beach is a very short, beautiful walk down the sand, we absolutely fell in love with Banana Beach--the one that greets you at the end of the short, jungley path across from the house. Tunnels gets crowded in the afternoon--but Banana Beach feels like a hidden gem, where locals (who were all friendly to us) bring their kids to frolic in the waves in the afternoon--and that made for gorgeous sunset time. Our kids (12 and 8) were so inspired that they learned to boogie board watching those kids, and always wanted to go to "our" beach instead of Tunnels! There's definitely a surf at Banana Beach, but it's crystal clear and--except on our first (windy!) day--lovely for body-surfing. The house is about a mile from Ke'e beach, the NaPali Coast trailhead (Kalalau), wet and dry caves, Limahuli Botanical Garden and the Hanelei Colony Resort. We were so happy to have this amazing home centered right where we could really explore what we feel is the very best area of the very best island in Hawaii. It was also easy to pop over to Hanalei or Princeville, too. My *only* concern in writing this review is that others will find out how fabulous this house is, and that we'll have a harder time booking our NEXT visit, which we're already planning! Thank you Bill!! And Mahalo!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed at Hale O'Pulelehu'a in early February, and it was absolutely the best vacation we ever had! The house was beautiful, immaculate and comfortable. We were so excited to "discover" the "tunnel" leading to the almost private beach where we spent almost all of our time. The windows were always open, we slept to the sound of the ocean, with breezes wafting over us. We cooked most of our meals at "home", the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. We had Mai-Tai's frequently at Naede's in Hanalei (GREAT food, too) visited the Farmer's Market, read books from the house's library, watched the sea turtles and whales, hiked the Na' Pali coast. Even watched a couple get married on the beach on Valentine's Day. This was the most relaxing vacation we have ever had. We are already planning our next visit. We LOVE Kaua'i and absolutely LOVE this beach house! Would recommend this house to anyone....from a mature couple to big family....BEST HOME AWAY FROM HOME!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed for over two weeks and were always happy with our stay in Haena. First the location, it is almost at the end of the road, it is the Napali Coast and rugged cliffs after that. The drive after Princeville was like dipping into paradise. Tunnels Beach is a nice walk, and the views from there are amazing ... we never thought we see exceptional sunsets on the North Shore, but we were wrong, they were the best sunsets we'd seen since in Hawaii. The house is perfect, really spacious - all the amenities you need, but not so precious that we felt unnerved with three kids under 6. It is clear that the owner and his family spend time here, all the accomodations you need. Wonderful kitchen, loads of space, and the views from the house are delicious. We have been plotting how to return. We loved the location, we loved the wildness of Haena, and the proximity to our favorite town on earth ... Hanalei. The mystic path to the beach made a nice transition from home to beach and also kept the sand a little at bay. Final note to detail ... we really appreciated having hot water in the outdoor shower. i don't want to rave too much, otherwise Haena will become overcrowded. If you like being off the path, but not camping, and if you like nature and a little wild this is your place. We stayed in houses all over three of the islands north shore and south shore alike, and thank goodness this was our last stop because all the others would pale in comparison. Been home 10 days and still can't stop dreaming, talking and obsessing over our stay in Haena.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.

What a magnificent location for 4 sisters to celebrate some "Big" birthdays together! Beautiful, comfortable, accommodating, very, very relaxing, and pleasantly furnished! The ocean/beach is just steps from your driveway, and the beach is very private and secluded. This home has every amenity you might hope for, to ensure a wonderful Kauai vacation. The owners have lovingly restored this Hawaiian Plantation home with much understated class, using high quality materials. Even the beautiful wood floors were a delight to the feet to walk on! The living area is incredible, with a very large and open floor plan that gently overflows out onto the outdoor lanai. The master bed/bath is absolutely grand, with a beautiful, walk-in shower and personal access to the lanai. The kitchen is quite large, and very well stocked to accommodate most any type of cooking, including many spices. We had purchased a water filter to use, but found the refrigerator had a great filter on the ice maker/water dispenser, so we returned it to the local Walmart and found the water to be great for drinking and making our morning coffee. Lots and lots of nice, thick bath towels; loads of nice beach towels, and a well-stocked outside closet full of beach chairs, umbrellas, water toys, snorkels, boogie boards and even a nice ice chest for the beach. Although the home is furnished with a nice size TV, we never turned it on ~ the sound of ocean waves was far more enticing. Bill also keeps a great CD of some great Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar music that definitely goes with the mood of the Island. I purchased the CD on Amazon as soon as I arrived home! The house was in impeccably clean condition upon our arrival and we greatly appreciated the attention to detail in how the home was cleaned. We hope to enjoy your lovely home again in the future, Bill. Thank you for the opportunity for us sisters to enjoy your beautiful piece of Heaven-on-earth together in such a beautiful and comfortable setting!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Our families joined together this summer for a rare chance to see everyone from afar (and meet the in-laws!) This house was perfect for what we were looking for...plenty of space to enjoy hanging out together (both inside and out), a beautiful yard for the kids to run around, not to mention literally steps away from a peaceful, untouristed beach. We really enjoyed the outdoor downstairs area, with the BBQ, couches, and picnic table where we had most of our meals. The beach is fantastic, with a swimming area right out front and miles of beach for the walkers and runners. The house itself was beautiful- very clean and maintained, and the fully stocked kitchen allowed us to buy groceries and make ourselves right at home- they even provided a spice/oil cabinet which helped reduce extra expenses. The kids enjoyed the puzzles and games. Between the mountains and the sound of the ocean, the views were stunning from every direction. I highly recommend this home for anyone wanting a clean, peaceful, charming taste of the north shore of Kauai. It is slightly off the beaten track which allows a more personal experience, yet the quaint town of Hanalei is only about 10 minutes away where you can find all the goodies and shops you need. Thanks again for a wonderful stay!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The house was immaculate and the rooms were all decorated so nice and felt very authentic Hawaiian. We were so happy the kitchen was completely stocked for cooking as we barbecued and ate at the large table outside while ocean breezes kept us cool and hungry eaters relaxed and ate. The Hanalei Dolphin fish market in town provided wonderful fish for us to prepare. One of our favorite things about Hale O'Pulelehu'a was the gorgeous and private beach that was just steps from the house thru a tree tunnel. Everyone could easily move back and forth from the house to the beach for various activities. In addition, only two miles down the road was one of Kauai’s best snorkeling beaches – Ke’e Beach. Our active group also hiked the Kalalau trail which starts at Ke’e beach and is world renowned and gorgeous! We will definitely go back to Kauai and stay at Hale O'Pulelehu'a!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

What a great Hawaiian plantation house! This is my 40th+ trip to Hawaii and this is the nicest house & location on all the islands. If you really want to feel the old Hawaii, this is the house & location. Hard to leave, easy to come back too! This is not Waikiki! Long walks on the beach, the Kaulalau trailhead is a easy 45 minute walk away, sometimes the only person on the beach.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Back in 2005, my wife and I had the good fortune to find the 'Butterfly House" In Haena. Doing justice to the experience we had would be difficult to do with words alone but here goes. The house itself is the best example of hawaiian plantation style architecture. Spacious rooms, well appointed and so comfortable. We had a lot of things we wanted to see on the north shore but leaving the comfort of the house made it so hard. Getting to the water (Banana beach) takes a 1/2 minute as the footpath is right outside the front door. Talk about peaceful. I could wax on but space doesn't allow it. We loved it and so very badly want to return but we are afraid we might never leave.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed at this house in February 2009 and absolutely loved it. The house is beautiful with a kitchen to die for. Everything you could possibly need in a kitchen is there. The property is kept very clean, rooms and floors are beautiful, beds are comfortable, bathrooms are gorgeous (master has a huge walk-in shower area), and the walk to the beach is very short and lovely. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone. You will not be disappointed.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Great house for a group. Wonderful location with fun things to do closeby in all directions: beach, trail, bar, cute town, festivals in the parks, poi factory, water sports, hiking, touristing. Huge kitchen for cooking dishes foraged from local sources, like fish, coconut, pineapples, taro, etc. Nice airy bedrooms. A real treat.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
