Great Old Single-Family Home in Historic Neighborhood

This shotgun house,(meaning 'no halls, one room after another'. You could shoot a shotgun from the front door out the backdoor, but please don't) is in one of the oldest residential neighborhoods outside of the French Quarter (the original city of New Orleans). Many of the people that originally lived in the Bywater were craftsmen, so the houses are not fancy, but have character.

Four of us stayed here over spring break and really enjoyed it. The house was clean and charming and everything was as advertised. The neighborhood south of St. Claude was fun to explore and was a quick bus ride or reasonable walk from the French quarter. The house does border several recovering areas of the city and we were warned on several occasions not to wander around at night. Though we never felt personally threatened, it's worth noting that this location is not in the safest area. Overall though, it was a great experience for us.Recommended for: Adventure seekers.
Owner response: I don't disagree that there are some rundown properties a few blocks away, but that's just a typical New Orleans neighborhood. You can walk by mansions on St. Charles Ave., turn a corner, walk a couple of blocks and see some really blighted homes. This is a city-wide problem which was worsened by Katrina. Some folks took their insurance money (or didn't have insurance) and just walked away from their properties. It's always prudent to be very careful in a new situation.

For starters, Debbie was very easy to work with. My family and I were first time visitors to New Orleans and really did not know what to expect. Although we would probably rate the "New Orleans" experience as "Average" we definitely rate Ms. Debbie's home as a "Wow" experience. The home is as described in detail. The furnishings, fixtures and decorations appear to be carefully considered and compliments each other well. I especially love the rear bath and kitchen area. Her home included all the necessary amenities of being at home. Everything was neat and clean. The gate you see to the right of the home opens up to a space that was big enough to park our seven passenger mini van, with plenty room to spare. The neighborhood is in a historic area ( French Quarters and Downtown are a few blocks away). The locals were pleasant. We wanted to explore the city through the eyes of a Louisian (if that's a word) so we took the street bus to downtown (one block away), got a transfer to ride the trolley, which took us to the Ferry next to the Aquarium). Love, love, love the home and would definitely stay there again.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, families with young children.

It was a perfect stay. Everything was like shown in the describtion. The house is in a quiet and save neighborhood with friendly neighbors. About 20min walk away from the French Market. The house has the perfect flair and the phantastic ambience of NewOrleans we were looking for. We stayed with 4 adults and 2 Kids and there was enough space in the house. The kitchen was very well equipet, beds were very comfortable, A/C worked very well too. The whole house was very clean. Internet worked very good too. There is enough parking space for two family vans behind the fence which you can lock as well. The yard is like expected for a house in a city. The public bus stops about 2min walk away from the house if somebody prefers not to walk. With this location you will not need your car to explore NewOrleans if you want to. Parking in NewOrleans sight seeing areas is challenging. A supermarket and grocery store are close to the house. That is an advantage since Downtown, French Quarter and GardenDistrict do not have shops for food or drinks. Debbie, the owner, was very helpful and super nice. The whole reservation process was easy and fast. We enjoyed our stay very very very much. Thank you so much. My documentary film team (two women and me) recently stayed at this VRBO while shooting a film in the Lower Ninth Ward. We found it to be clean and geographically convenient. It has hard wired internet access rather than cable which meant that only one of us could work at a time, but we were able to work around that. We were also able to work around the one full bathroom (perhaps more of an issue for a bunch of women). The kitchen is ample size and included everything we needed. It was also nice to have washer and dryer available. The shotgun layout takes some getting used to if you've never stayed in one before, but we all know one another pretty well and get along great so going through someone else's bedroom to get to the kitchen or the den wasn't an issue. We did appreciate the fact that you can leave your car behind a locked gate. Much safer. Debbie was extremely accessible when we had questions which we appreciated.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Small group stayed for 1 week and we all loved it. A nice escape from city bustle. The inside was much more spacious than we thought and it was comfortably and simply decorated. Very clean. Central A/C was awesome. Comfortable beds. Large open kitchen with lots of counter and cupboard space adequately stocked. Main bathroom was large and shower had good water pressure. Washer and dryer (looked new) were handy. Folding lawn chairs were great for the Crescent City BBQ and Blues Festival. Initial problem with internet was quickly fixed with owners helpful guidance. The workstation where the ethernet connection is accessed for internet needs improvement or switch to wireless internet. We had a car rental, almost necessary for the location although cabs were under $10 to Frenchman street, and it was easy to get to downtown or interstate. Streetlight outside keeps area well lit, friendly neighbors, quiet except for local roosters that were more enjoyable than annoyance. Walgreens and 24 hours grocery (Mardi Gras Supermarket) not too farRecommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: My husband and I are retired educators who left New Orleans post-Katrina for a warm, dry place to spend our 'golden years'. After 2 1/2 years in Phoenix (which is a lovely place), we miss New Orleans terribly and hope to return as often as possible. There is no place like it in the world.
Why the Owner Chose Marigny-Bywater:
This was a rental house until we renovated this house for our use when we return to New Orleans for frequent visits (a must). It is not glamorous, (nor are we), but very clean, cute, comfortable and convenient.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
New Orleans is a city of 'neighborhoods' and this one is a diverse and unpretenious neighborhood of real working New Orleanians, but close enough to enjoy all that the French Quarter and Downtown have to offer. The house has old-world charm in it high ceilings, pine floors and pocket doors. It has a fenced yard for privacy, but notice how the neighbors 'porch-sit' and everyone speaks to everyone.
