Nestled in the foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains and nurtured by the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers, Lake Sidney Lanier is named for the post Sidney Clopton Lanier, whose admiration of the area's scenic beauty inspired him to compose his famous 'Song of the Chattahoochee'.
Lake Lanier is one of America's favorite lakes. With several million visitors annually enjoying its recreational facilities, it has been the most visited Corp of Engineers project in the nation.
One reason for for the lake's popularity is its proximity to metropolitian Atlanta, Georgia. A well-developed road network surrounds Lake Lanier, with several highways crossing the main body. Visitors can enjoy the city of Atlanta and, in the space of a short drive, can lose themselves in the tranquility at Lake Lanier.
Lake Lanier, impounded by Buford Dam, encompasses 38,000 surface acres of water with 540 miles of shorelines. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed and operates numerous public parks around the lake for camping and day-use activities.
Lake Lanier Islands, a development by the State of Georgia and the Corps of Engineers, is the major resort area on the lake. The Islands complex provides picnicking, camping, beach areas, a water theme park, tennis courts, golf courses, rental boats, and hotel accommodations. Numerous other recreation areas operated by county and city agencies also offer recreational opportunities around the lake.
Lake Lanier was host to the 1996 Centennial Olympic Rowing and Sprint/Canoe/Kayak Events, as well as the 1996 Paralympic Yachting events. These honors have helped make Lanier a world class lake.
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: We are from Gwinnett county Georgia and wanted a second home not too far from our primary home so we could use it often. Our kids love water sports and bringing friends to the lake. Family time is precious and being together at the lake makes it easier for us to spend some quality time as a family.
Why the Owner Chose Gainesville: We owned a house on Lake Lanier a little further north before building this one. We desired a lot that wasn't as steep of a walk down to the lake, and this one fit the bill. The setting among the trees and the privacy we have at the house is perfect. No matter what the water levels are on the lake, we are able to move the dock out further so that we always have water and can get our boats in and out.
The house itself is great for couples as well as families since four of the five bedrooms have their own bathroom. It has been a wonderful house for family vacations as well as entertaining.
The Unique Benefits at this House: There are many things we love about the house. The outdoor kitchen with the fire ring is one of our favorites. No matter what time of year, we use the outdoor grill and fire ring as a place to gather. The covered decks off the back of the house are good for meals and to sit and relax with a cup of coffee. If it is raining, you can still sit and enjoy the view. The ceiling fans keep it a comfortable temperature in the warm months.
The cove where our dock is located makes a great spot to sit and watch people fish, tube or ski. It is a protected spot, yet very open without being in an area where the dock/boat gets knocked around. The location on the lake is convenient; we love to take the boat over to Pelican Pete's and eat and listen to music. There is always something to do and Gainesville is 10 minutes away if we want to go shopping or go to dinner.
