Rogers - 13 miles) and the VA Creeper Bike Trail (42 miles), the cabin provides a base for scenic trips to numerous festivals, antique shops and outdoor recreational opportunities if you have an itch to do so. Alternatively, you can rock on the front porch and absorb the ever-changing and spectacular views. The log cabin features a 2-story vaulted ceiling, dramatic fireplace and rough-hewn plank walls and ceiling in the living room. Local vintage antiques decorate the LR walls.
The cabin is surrounded by pine forests and fields, so you might see some deer and wild turkeys and hear owls. You are guaranteed to hear a chorus of birds and the swish of the wind through pine trees in the morning. Bring your hiking shoes and some good books to enjoy in this tranquil, beautiful setting.

We had a truly memorable Thanksgiving at this cabin. Here is what we loved -- the fantastic views, the remoteness, the coziness of the cabin, the fireplace. We chose this area because we wanted to bike the Virginia Creeper Trail (so much fun!). It was quite a distance from the trail (we realized this), but what a beautiful drive. We arrived at the cabin late at night - not a good idea. You must read the info they send which gives detailed directions, explains stuff. I would suggest a picture of the 4th bedroom. We didn't need to use it, but it is tiny, with bunks (fun for kids). I can't say enough how we loved the "feel" of this cabin - inside and outside.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We're family with 3 small children (ages newborn, 2 and 6). We had so much fun and there was so much for the kids to do and explore just even at and around the cabin itself! We did find it a little precarious physically getting to and from the cabin in our minivan, especially after a day of rain, but we made it and it was well worth it! If you have the option of a 4 wheel drive vehicle, I would suggest using that even in the other seasons not just fall/winter. I have to say that's the only potentially negative thing I can say. The cabin is clean and well maintained and rustic all at the same time. The views are spectacular and it's so secluded. We spent a day hiking the Appalachian Trail but otherwise we were happy to hike on the road to and from the cabin and the children and my husband loved the giant boulder in the front yard! We got some great family pictures! My husband and I sipped wine in the evening while rocking on the front porch and enjoyed some beautiful sunsets. Even the day where all it did was rain we kept busy with a fire in the fireplace (we actually had one going every evening), roasted marshmallows, played hide and seek and other games. Fred was so friendly and easy to work with! He was prompt in responding to emails and willing to really go out of his way for us to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Even when we weren't sure on the dates he was flexible and gave us different options and prices of each option. We would love to do this get-a-way again. Next time we would probably invite another family to join us. We mostly just inhabited the downstairs area except for our game of hide and seek. However, we would highly recommend this cabin and look forward to renting it again in the future! Thanks!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/2

This is the quintessential 'cabin in the woods'. Independence (closest town) looks like it was made out of a movie set. I kept looking behind the buildings to make sure they were real. We took our family canoeing in the local river. It was fabulous! Water temperature was cool (not cold). Great family bonding time! That's saying a lot since we have teenage daughters. Other activities included a tubing trip, local sightseeing, great local food in some one of a kind restaurants. All of the local folks were so friendly. All of the accommodations are cozy. We had plenty of room to spread out and lots of privacy. We were able to do puzzles during the day, wander about the woods, all in seclusion. Our dinners were filled with great conversation in the quaint dining room overlooking the mountain. The pictures don't do it justice. We spent every night on the porch with the most beautiful skies and not another sound other than the joyful sounds of our girls playing on 'the rock'. In fact, we kept a photo as a keepsake for the trip. It brings back wonderful memories! We built the most beauttiful fire at night. My husband and I stayed up and drank wine by the fire. It was so peaceful. No sound at night other than the rhythmic chirping of the cicadas. You won't be disappointed in this property. To top it off, the owners are gracious, welcoming, and friendly.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 4/4

The views from the front porch is worth the trip! We stayed the 4th of July in 2011 and the weather was perfect. This cabin sits on approx. 30+ acres and you can see 3 or 4 states from the front porch. Inside was very clean and had all the comforts of home. New kitchen with hardwood floors. Large living room w/fireplace. Upstairs bedroom is amazing for kids. Double beds and lots of bunk beds in one room. Put em all up there! Large area to play out front and a hiking loop around the Christmas tree farm. Located about 25 miles from Shatley Springs for good home cooking and fun place to go. Fun rafting down the New River as well. The parade in Independence, Va. was a site! Mt. Rodgers State Park was also a great place to visit. We will going back again soon!
