This is a great property with an outstanding view of the surrounding mountains. Somewhat isolated, but that's what we expected. Home was well appointed with well stocked kitchen. A 4WD vehicle is probably necessary when there is snow on the road. We will be back next year!

Wonderful Mountain Cabin
Wonderful Mountain Cabin
Cabin was great -- location and scenery are absolutely wonderful. Everything in the cabin is well maintained and in working order. Cabin is roomier than it appears in the website photos. On/y cleanliness issues were lots of black flies (alive and dead) in the master bedroom, and the front windows need cleaning in order to really enjoy the view.

Decent Place to stay, Not exaclty as described
Decent Place to stay, Not exaclty as described
When we first arrived at the cabin the power was out and took awhile to figure out why the fridge was not coming on, turns out there is one of those CGFI outlets with a manual reset behind the fridge. We had bought tons of groceries in Montrose prior to the arrival and had to wait for the fridge to cool down. Not sure how the power was out for that long because supposedly there was a cleaning crew that was there just before our arrival. It is uncertain how long the power was out but it was more than a few hours, the fridge was not cold at all and the battery in the portable phone was completely dead. There where dead flies everywhere in the cabin and it looked like some time since anyone had swept the floor or dusted, cob webs in every corners. The cabin wasn't that dirty I only bring it up because you have to pay a "cleaning fee", what are you getting for that "cleaning fee"? No fault of the property owner but maybe its time for a new cleaning crew. Also there where used wash cloths in the shower, not a very thorough job. That brings me to the property manager, As I mentioned the cordless phone was dead, however after a few hours of charging the phone line itself was dead. And as other reviewers have stated there is absolutely no cell phone coverage. I went to a neighboring cabin to use their phone and call the manager. I told him the phone was not working and he shrugged it off and said he would not be able to make it to the cabin that day. I asked him when he could make it and he wasn't sure. We stayed 5 days and the phone never got fixed. Poor poor service. Some small things not a big deal, yes it has satellite TV but there are only about 5 channels that aren't blocked. Website says it has internet, It does not(maybe dial-up if the phone was working). No A/C, It does get hot in the mountains in the summer just pointing that out. I specifically asked about the BBQ grill and the owner told me to bring my own charcoal, so I did only to find the grill locked in the garage and again the property manager would not come over to get it out. The biggest misleading info is that this cabin sleeps 6. There are only two beds and the couch does not pull out. There were 6 of us on the trip expecting not to sleep on the floor. If we are suppose to sleep on the floor why stop at 6? this place could easy sleep 15 people on the floor. Bottom line It had great views and I would stay here again but bring an air mattress this time

Not bad. Squishy floors. the couch isn't one that anyone can sleep on. The "property manager" refused to send me directions in writing. I found him to be worthless. The owner sent me directions by email after I called. But the directions were inaccurate, and written by someone that doesn't speak English as a first language. So the directions were confusing and cost us over an hour in delays. It was hot in the master bedroom at night and I couldn't figure out how to lower the temp other than opening the door leading out to the upstairs balcony. The view from the front patio was beautiful and the interior was attractive, but could use a little updating. Very nice washer and dryer, lots of hot water. NO WiFi!!! That killed me, because there is no cell coverage at all. Not Sprint, AT&T, or Verizon. My computer can get online in most areas by one of these methods and I had NO connection at all. And they don't provide wifi. So if you need to be online don't stay here. But overall it was nice, deer were all around and it was a short drive to Owl Creek Pass and Montrose. John Wayne Park is close also. (where they fillmed the last gun fight of True Grit) So overall I'm happy with the place. But Internet would have helped. As I mentioned the directions they give are not exactly right. And it took much longer to find the place than it should have. And you can't call them to clarify because there is NO cell coverage in the area. But if coming from Montrose, Turn on "Cimarron road". (it does not say Big Cimarron Rd on the sign as they tell you in the directions). At least not at first, after you drive a little way down the road there is another sign that is very small and says Big Cimarron. But at night and in the rain, you can't see it. I learned that the hard way. Also it does not say 858 until you reach the national forrest. And they tell you to drive to the Sunrise Retreat. That name is incorrect. It is called the Sonrise Mountain Ranch. Also you turn BEFORE you reach the Sonrise Mtn Ranch. This is important information in the dark and in the rain! You can't see the sign. AND, the house is way up the hill about half a mile. It's not immediately off Cimarron Rd. as they directions indicate. So Drive all the way to the end. It's hard to find in the DARK AND IN THE RAIN!! I'm still mad about the directions.

Owner response: Thank you for the four star rating despite the problems you listed. Our response to your concerns are as follows: 1. squishy floors” - This is a quaint two story cabin with a wood floor base and wood flooring other thick padding which results when walked on with some springiness. 2. wrong directions - The driving directions on the website have been updated and the error of “Sunrise Retreat” has been corrected to “Sonrise Mountain Ranch”. 3. no a/c - The VRBO description indicates there is NO A/C. However none of the cabins at Eagle’s Rest have air conditioning. During summer time residents and guests just open a window and enjoy the fresh cool mountain air. 4. no WiFi - As stipulated in our property description there is NO Wi-Fi at the cabin and NO cell phone coverage. Dial up internet is possible on the land line if you have a dial up account set up. Cell service is very sparse to non-existent in these mountains because of very few cell towers. We are sorry that this proved to be a major inconvenience for you. A possible solution could be to drive down the mountain towards the highway (that is approximately 30 minutes away) until you achieve cell phone coverage. Thank you for your visit and your feedback. We have updated the directions and are providing more detailed information on the cell phone coverage limitation. We are sorry that it was difficult to find in the cabin particularly in the rain and that there is no high speed Wi-Fi connection. We hope that this does not discourage future visits by you and thank you once again for the four star rating.
The cabin has amazing views and wonderful wildlife to watch. We saw herds of elk and numerous deer, right out side the cabin. It is a log cabin that has beautiful wood furniture. The bathrooms and kitchen don't have the up to date fixtures/appliance's, if that is what you are looking for, but everything works and you can't beat the views. We also liked that there were very few people around and about that area. There are numerous lakes close by and roads to explore. A great area to enjoy nature or just relax on the deck and check out the views.

The pictures of the property do not do it justice. This home has some of the best views of the mountain ridge to the east as from its HUGE porch as well as spectacular views of the Mountains to the south. It is important to know this area is remote, and mostly locals venture here. Up the road, are three dead end forks with fantastic alpine meadows, bowls, and trails to hike. Most all trails are accessible by 2WD vehicles with West Fork requiring high clearance towards the end. The Aspen viewing in the fall is unlike any other. This is our 11th year to this area. As for the cabin, it was very clean, roomy, LOTS of windows. Our family of 5 never felt "on top" of each other. Plenty of room for your trailer and 4-wheelers/ATV/Jeep. I would DEFINATELY go again and stay at this cabin. There is plenty of lake and/or stream fishing. Hiking, biking, ATV trails, and the BEST Jeep trails just across the mountains in Ouray. We always drive to Ouray over Owl Creek Pass to run a few trails in our Jeep as well as enjoying a burger at the Ouray Brewery. (top 10 best burger I've ever had)
