PRUDENCE ISLAND - THE ANTI-MARTHA'S VINEYARD

Have you had enough of vacations that include traffic jams, endless stores selling overpriced junk, crowded beaches, too-expensive accomodations, too-long waits for restaurant tables and all the other hype and aggrevation that you can now find in many New England resorts?

Why not try something different, less expensive, and unique?Prudence Island is a seven mile long island in the middle of Narragansett Bay. It has no malls, no traffic, and, in fact no traffic lights. All we have here are two general stores, a post office and a gift shop that is only open sometimes. We also have numerous small, quiet sandy/rocky beaches,incredible coastal views, acres of ancient woods with beautiful flowers and trees, abundant fish and shellfish just waiting to be harvested...and peace and quiet.

Almost total quiet. No crime, no garish establishments, really no place to spend your money unless you count the penny candy at Marcy's general store. Even on the 4th of July, you likely can find a small beach to have all to yourself.

Here on the island we also have nice, laid-back folks who respect your privacy. We have wonderful fields, lawns and roads where kids can play safely and ride bikes all day long. We have a fireman's fair, an annual event by the Prudence Improvement Association (which includes the famous Prudence Island Chowder Cook-Off), an ice cream social in the community garden, and movies every Wednesday night. And bingo, real honest-to-goodness bingo (to benefit the Prudence Improvement Association) every Friday.

Our simple cottage has a nice view of the water from the 12' x 12' deck that faces Narragansett Bay and the Mt. Hope Bridge. The cottage isn't fancy. But it is clean, pretty and fully-equipped. And comfortable.

We live here on the property year-round and love it. We want to welcome you to the delights of Prudence Island and to help mske your vacation memorable. We also want to leave you alone. As you might imagine, folks who come here who visit enjoy the outdoor life. Since there are no restaurants or bars on the island, its BYO everything.

The Island can be reached only by ferry,the Prudence Island ferry (401-253-9808), which runs about six times a day from Bristol. You can bring over your car with an advance reservation. The ferry ride is approximately 25 minutes from Bristol, Rhode Island to the island. If you plan to stay with us and want to bring your car (which we recommend), make your reservations EARLY!

Prudence Island is the place for you and your family (or for a lovely, private get-away for a couple) if you want a quiet, safe and non-commercial vacation on the water.
