NESTLED IN THE BEAUTIFUL SAN JUAN RANGE OF THE ROCKIES' WESTERN SLOPE, the Vandiver Cabin is a guaranteed spot for enjoying Colorado's best kept secret. Lake City is a small, riverside historic community that has escaped commercialization. Although this cabin has the comforts of three bedrooms, two baths, the internet, and a 42' LCD with satellite & DVD/VHS player, you'll be taken back in time to the days of the gold rush, wagon trails, and the historic Packer massacre.

This QUAINT SINGLE-STORY CEDAR CABIN lies in the Ball Flats less than one mile from the town center and only one block from the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. The cabin was built in the 1960's by Ed & Syllrene Vandiver after discovering the best fly-fishing in Colorado. The VANDIVER CABIN WAS RENOVATED IN 2012 and includes new appliances, dishwasher, granite countertops, updated bathroom, new furniture & linens, and added porch amenities including outdoor seating, picnic table with umbrella, and a new gas grill.

There are THREE BEDROOMS each with a queen-sized bed. The first two bedrooms share a bath with a tub/shower off of the family room. The third, larger bedroom includes twin shaved pine bunk beds in addition to the queen and also has a private bath with shower. The kitchen, which has served many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners around the antique maple table, is amply supplied with cooking tools including a crockpot, pancacke griddle, blender, waffle maker, blender, mixer, food processor, and pots & pans of every shape and size. The cabin has an open floorplan with the kitchen connecting to the family room which is heated by an old fashioned Franklin wood-burning stove. Great for a chilly evening! The large front porch with outdoor seating encourages viewing of the moutain scenering while eating meals under the spruce and aspen trees. Washer and dryer are included in the cabin, connected to the back bedroom.

The TOWN OF LAKE CITY takes pride in having well-maintained walking & biking trails along the river. This cabin is just two blocks from the access point to this riverfront trail. These paths travel along the river and make for a fun morning walk with the birds and deer or an easy trip to the park, baseball field, local restaurants, churches, and local shops. There's even a hidden skateboard park! The cabin is conveniently close to the Lake City bakery which draws a crowd by 7 AM for their famous fruit pockets & cinnamon rolls (don't miss this!). The well-stocked country grocer store is just across the river.

There are 8-10 locally-owned restaurants with menus ranging from pizza with calzones & hand-breaded fried chicken to fine French dining. A dozen local shops make for a fun afternoon of discovering local artists and craftsmen, painters, & sporting goods. The personal feeling as you explore the town is like no other. The Cabin Fever Players (the local community theeater), Lake City Chorus, and old-fashined ice cream parlor make for enjoyable entertainment. LakeCity.com lists the community's calendar of events to help you plan your stay!

Some of Colorado's best HIKING AND JEEP/ATV TRAILS are found at Lake City's near-9,000 foot elevation. Explore waterfalls, cross rivers over log bridges, picnic while overlooking Lake San Cristobal, and climb area fourteeners with breathtaking views of wildflowers, marmots, grazing moose, and long-horn sheep. Locak jeep rentals can provide your 4-wheel access to the Alpine Loop via the infamous Cinnamon & Engineer's passes. This drive is along steep & austere mountainside paths and suitable for eager explorers or avid photographers, especailly in July & August when the wildflowers are blooming. These sights offer a new burst of color in September & October when the aspen leaves change to fall hues. The Alpine Loop provides access to Silverton, Colorado, which is known for its steam engine train ride to Durango. The Alpine Loop can be traveled in one day and is a do-not-miss, 'bucket list' experience. Of course, fishing is one of Lake City's greatest draws. Explore the rivers and lakes on your own or enlist a local fishing guide for a safe-bet fish fry that same evening.

The VANDIVER CABIN is smoke-free and welcomes well-behaved pets and owners. This cabin is available from spring until late fall, usually May 1st until October 31st. Inquire for LONG-TERM RATES for stays of 8 days or longer, especially perfect for watching the aspens change in September and October. THE FALL COLOR IS BREATHTAKING.

Owned and operated by MOUNTAIN MEMORIES, LTD, described by many as having Lake City's finest rentals with the special touches usually seen in the country's nicest B & B's. See our sister property at VRBO #302010! We'd love to have you.

We enjoyed an extended Christmas vacation in this beautifully furnished cozy cabin. Even with snow on the ground, we barbecued burgers on the outside grill. Kitchen facilities were excellent for preparing Christmas dinner. We enjoyed other meals at local restaurants in town. Picture windows framed snowcapped peaks and provided views of snowrabbits ambling about. Elk, moose and deer provided a glimpse of natural habitat. Grandchildren especially enjoyed use of the beautiful Aspen bunkbeds and private bath. Each day provided exciting activities for adults and children alike.

Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Lake City holds a very special place in our hearts. We've been visiting for many years and even were married here exactly 14 years ago. We came to celebrate our anniversary and a milestone birthday. This cabin was perfect. Our family felt right at home! Thank you for welcoming us. Our 4 kids loved the red carpet room! We hope to return soon for another stay! Thank you --

Thank you for the wonderful and cozy comforts of home here at your Lake City cabin! We also appreciate your willingness to accommodate my husband and me on such short notice. We enjoyed your recommended hike--Alpine Gluch--and the beautiful drive to Creede (excellent day trip). Our highlight was renting a jeep and driving the Alpine Loop. All in all, a WONDERFUL 30th anniversary stay for us! Keep up the great work.

We were so honored to be your first guests in the Vandiver family cabin over the July 4th holiday this year. The transformation of the cabin has been miraculous and both beautifully and tastefully executed. Details are thoughtful, beautiful, and artistically coordinated. The picturesque views from the unobstructed windows are heartwarming—visible tops of snow-capped mountains, roaming deer, low-moving summer storm clouds, splashes of summer blooms, and families walking their dogs and enjoying the fresh, cool Colorado air. All aspects brought a feeling of peacefulness and quietude—a nice escape from the city life we’re accustomed to. Also enjoyable is the cabin’s proximity to the activities of Lake City, beautiful new walking and bike trails, and the close access to the river. During our stay we enjoyed a tour of the old mine up Henson Creek, the favorite old-fashioned soda shop, and of course, the Lake City bakery just a stone’s throw across the river. Shopping the local art galleries and boutiques in addition to eating at our favorite restaurants was a real treat. However, all applauded eating delicious steaks at the cabin on the new bar-b-que grill. In total, your cabin offered us an experience we will always remember and treasure. Thanks for sharing with us the amenities of a beautifully decorated cabin in such a gorgeous and picturesque mountain village.
