Nob Hill apartment description

Ideal apartment for either work or play in the vibrant Nob Hill neighborhood, adjacent to the Pearl, steps from mass transit and within 2 miles of downtown, cultural and sporting attractions and recreational opportunities. (This is the second apartment in this building listed on VRBO. See #353730 if you find your dates already booked in this unit.)

Located on the 2nd floor of this 1904 Victorian 4-plex, the high-ceiling apartment has two bedrooms with queen beds, while the third has twin beds. The largest bedroom opens through French doors to the front deck, ideal for sitting around the bistro table for an end-of-the day libation. The second queen bedroom is equipped with a small TV and is located on the other side of the apartment from the other bedrooms. The bathroom is divided with the tub, shower, sink and vanity in one room and the toilet and sink in the other room.

In the living room, a large couch provides seating for six to eight in front of a wood-burning fireplace and television. A small desk completes the furniture in this room.

The kitchen is fully equipped and has a large dining area with seating for up to 8 people. (Ask where the leaf is located if you're planning a large gathering.) The kitchen opens onto the expansive back deck with its own table and and chairs as well as a barbecue. A vintage maple tree - more than 100 years old - provides a canopy for shade over both the back deck and the entire building.

TV with Comcast on-demand and more than 100 channels in one of the queen bedrooms and living room. DVD player. Small stereo system in the living room and clock radios in each bedroom.

Air conditioning is located in the living room and the two larger bedrooms. Temperatures in Portland rarely reach above 90 degrees and when they do the air conditioners can cool most of the apartment. The living room also has a ceiling fan.

Working in Portland? Bring your laptop; high-speed Internet with wireless throughout the apartment; and land line with free long-distance to North America.

Here for vacation? Portland and surrounding area offers ample recreation for bicyclists, runners, hikers, water sports. Cultural attractions include performing arts, Portland Art Museum and countless art galleries in the Pearl and Nob Hill. Major league soccer (Portland Timbers) and basketball (Portland Trailblazers) venues are within walking distance. And scenic day trips range from Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood, the Columbia Gorge, Oregon wine country within 60 miles. The Oregon coast is 70 miles.

The apartment is surrounded by local boutique shops and the full range of dining - fine food, ethnic, food carts. On NW 21st, Caffe Mingo is the city's best Italian restaurant. Paley's Place, a top destination restaurant, is just 4 blocks away. On NW 23rd, Fireside is a lively dining spot using local products on a menu of unusual variations on familiar dishes. Kornblatt's Jewish deli serves unmatched lox and bagels. Taste is a wine bar with small plates. And your taste buds will welcome the unusual seafood combinations at Bamboo Sushi and ice cream at Salt and Straw. And in a class by itself is PBJ food cart with amazing variations of nut butters as the base for the sandwiches.

For shopping, the City Market for seafood, meat, cheese, produce and wine is just a block away, while Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Safeway and Fred Meyer offer the essential supermarket items.

Forest Park, the largest urban wooded area in the United States, is just over 2 miles away. It connects with hiking trails throughout the west side of Portland, including Washington Park, where the Oregon Zoo is located.

Some of the most interesting walks are stairs that take you through the Westside's neighborhoods. Google 'Walking stairs in Portland, Oregon.'

The Willamette Greenway can be accessed two dozen blocks away, offering a 7-mile riverside path for pedestrians and biking, connecting to the Springwater Corridor bike and walking path that follows an abandoned rail line through several natural areas to Gresham and beyond - a 50-mile round-trip ride or walk.

The cultural center of the city is less than 2 miles and includes the Portland Performing Arts Center, Keller Auditorium and Portland Art Museum. Smaller performing arts venues and art galleries are less distant.

And downtown Portland is less than two miles away, reached either by a brisk walk or the street car. Pioneer Square includes major retailers. Macy's and Nordstrom's stores are nearby.

Major League sports are 20 minutes away on foot - the NBA Trail Blazers at the Moda Center and Timbers soccer at Providence Field.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 1987

About the owner: Retired after a 30-year career running a public affairs consulting firm and, prior to that, a corporate government affairs director. This followed 20 years as a AP reporter, Congressional aide and director of an environmental organization. Sammye, a native Oregonian, has been a banker and is now a Realtor, covering the metropolitan area. We each have two grown children - hers are boys and mine are girls. With the benefit of more time, I exercise and bicycle for health and pleasure, allowing my waist line to frequently partake of many of Portland's fine dining restaurants. Traveling extensively is more pleasurable than the days of client-driven trips at the drop of a corporate notion. The challenge is getting Sammye away from her clients, but we are working on that. With the exception of eight years in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, I've spent the past 53 years living in Portland and enjoying the great Pacific Northwest.

Why the Owner Chose Nob Hill:
The Nob Hill neighborhood is within the historic Alphabet District where street names are alphabetical - from Burnside to Vaughn. The building is central to two of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods and within walking distance of all of downtown with the rest of the city easily accessible by bicycle. The airport is a quick 20 minutes by car, slightly longer by light rail. The neighbors in the house are eclectic, friendly and respectful of privacy. The top floor neighbor has lived here longer than I have.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Surrounded by local boutique shops and the full range of dining - fine food, ethnic, food carts. On NW 21st, Caffe Mingo is the city's best Italian restaurant.
