Algoma apartment description
This is your chance to experience a bit of history when you stay in one of two beautifully furnished apartments above the Gerhart Building. This building dates back to 1891 and 1905. The oldest portion of the building first served as a tavern and the 1905 section of the building was built to be a hardware store known for many years as Gerhart's Hardware. The street-level portion of the building currently houses 'The Ivy Cottage', a delightful gift and home accessory shop, and 'Shannon's Yoga and Fitness', a great place to drop in and catch a work-out while vacationing.
After you enter the unassuming door on the street level of 2nd Street and climb a short flight of stairs, you will be pleasantly surprised to find two of the loveliest vintage apartments in all of downtown Algoma! They are bright and sunny with floor to ceiling windows in the living rooms and cozy bedrooms, with fully appointed kitchens. Apartment A has three bedrooms (one queen, one full, and two twins) and one bath and an extra sink and vanity in the hall. There is a large front living area that also has a pull-out couch and a gorgeous '4 seasons' room with knotty pine ceilings and windows around the whole room that offer a panoramic view of the winery, lake, and marina. There is a small outdoor roof deck that makes a great place to grill a meal or enjoy coffee or cocktail. This apartment has 4 small TV's that are either DVD or VHS ready and there is an extensive DVD and VHS collection with 100's of movies to choose from. Free WiFi is also available. The full-sized kitchen is completely stocked with everything you would need to create a beautiful meal, but you may prefer any of the many fine dining establishments that are less than a block away. There is a washer and dryer available for use also.
When you walk into Apartment B, the floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, and graceful arches in the living dining room will take your breath away. This lovely apartment has two bedrooms (one with a queen and one with two twins) and one bathroom. The kitchen is huge and cheery - a great place to cook a good old fashioned breakfast to enjoy at the antique dining table. Again, there is free WiFi and access to a multitude of movies.
This would be a perfect place to host a 'girlfriend trip' or a romantic get-away. And don't forget about the Von Stiehl Winery directly across the street. They have a wonderful tour and they host several events throughout the year (go to www.vonstiehl.com for more information). The yoga/pilates studio downstairs welcomes drop-ins. What could be more fun than to try a zumba class with your girlfriends and then cool off with a glass of wine!

College Roommates annual get away
College Roommates annual get away
We are five 50-something age women who met in college in the 70's and have been getting together for the past 8 years. One lives in TX, one in NY, the rest in MI. This year we decided to take the SS Badger across Lake Michigan. I found this apartment on VRBO and fell in love with it. The owner, Beth, was very accommodating and the local contact, Mike, was helpful as well. The place was as good in person as listed - clean, well stocked, and comfortable!! We were able to walk to numerous drinking and eating places. The view was GREAT! Yes, the stairs were steep, but we had no problem. The winery tour was fun, as was the Flying Pig Art Gallery. We were able to talk, laugh, sleep, eat and totally enjoy ourselves. The WiFi was a wonderful addition, so we could check in at home and play our FaceBook games! We did not visit the town beach since the weather was too cool, but it was very nice looking and appeared clean and well taken care of. Some of us plan to return with our spouses!! Thank you, Beth for the wonderful place to use for our vacation!!

Our party of six found Apt A to be clean, well maintained, and very spacious for our occasion. The managers were available and very responsive to our needs of additional supplies on the fourth day of staying. The only drawback to the rental was the steps to the apt. but it will not detour us from renting it again when we come to Algoma for fishing. The space accommodated our needs for napping, eating, and entertaining up to 12 people...with room to spare. The owner was more than easy to work with and willing to address our needs and make the changes necessary as our group increased in size. Everyone was pleased, amazed, and appreciative of the lodging opportunity. Thank you!

What a neat place! We arrived to the light on and found it was just as described. We stayed in apartment A and it was a good size for four guys on a fishing trip. The rooftop deck and sunroom were perfect. All the beds were clean and comfortable. There was plenty of room to relax, in fact I don't think we even sat in the front living room. The TV's didn't work but we did not miss them. The owner provides free wi-fi and that allows enough connection to the outside world. Great experience and I would definitely recommend this place to hang your hat! I'll be back.

Very quaint place and wonderful location next to water. Many diners and bars close by within walking distance. Older place with a lot of history but it was maintained and clean. Owner was very helpful and considerate. TV's did not work well but didn't really need them. We love any place that close to the beach!

Beth was very helpful with giving tips on what to do in the area. The local contact person, Mike, was prompt with addressing any questions. The apartment is charming and very comfortable; a walk away from everything. And the bikes and kayaks are a plus for enjoyings the area. If you are looking for a peaceful location that .is still close enough to beach, city(Green Bay) and local tourist sites --- Algoma is it . We are telling all our friends and acquaintances!

Wonderful, relaxing and beautiful!
Wonderful, relaxing and beautiful!
We had rented another home and it was not what they presented it to be online so we needed a place last minute. Beth and her crew made our last minute rental request go so smooth and fast. Once we saw the unit we immediately said we wanted to rent it. It was beautiful, clean, relaxing and so close to everything that we even decided to stay longer then expected. We will definitely be back!

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: Hi, my name is Beth and I grew up in the midwest. My family lived in Steven's Point, Wisconsin for several years before moving to Michigan and finally to Texas in 1976. I currently live in Denton, TX but I try to 'escape' to Wisconsin every summer when the heat gets too extreme down here.
Why the Owner Chose Algoma:
I purchased this property for several reasons. First, I love Algoma! What a great wholesome place to spend a summer! It has everything one could ask for in a small town - the lake, the beautiful outdoors, biking and hiking trails, art ('Clay on Steele'), great restaurants and bars, bowling, a good library, shopping (The Ivy Cottage and the very eclectic 'Flying Pig'), and GREAT FRIENDLY FOLKS! I have been taking my kids here every summer since they were babies and we have made so many wonderful memories (searching for beach glass and pretty rocks, swimming at Krohns lake, picnicking at all the many area parks, kayaking, and bicycling the Ahnapee Trail). But I fell in love with this particular building for two reasons. I always wanted to live in an upstairs apartment in a historical building, and I am an artist, so I loved the huge garage that I plan on turning into a studio when I retire in Texas. Since I live 5 states away, I liked the fact that there was no yard to upkeep and that I had downstairs tenants that could help me keep an eye on things when I wasn't there. So far, it has worked wonderfully and I try to get up here every chance I get. This place and this town provide me with a peaceful escape from the hectic pace and lifestyle that comes with living in the Dallas area.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
I purchased this property from the family of the original owners. They lived in this building for 3 generations and I think that's pretty neat that they have entrusted me with a piece of history that has been in their family since 1891. Therefore, with the exception of WiFi, I have not installed flat-screen TV's with nine million channels in every room. To me, this is a place to focus on yourself and the people and life you love. I've tried to furnish the apartments with beautiful artwork, and comfortable furniture and antiques. It is a place to rejuvenate your senses and get back in touch with nature and simplicity. If you want a modern-day hotel, then I urge you to look elsewhere, but if you want a beautiful comfortable home where you can read, rest, play games, tell stories, and relax then this is the place for you.
