Owner Description

One of us enjoying the opportunity to skipper on a friend's yawl. The other is below making lunch.

Why the Owner Chose Mystic

We fell in love with this wonderful home in anticipation of being here full time at some point. The historic and architectural character of the town and its buildings held a special appeal to two architects whose practice has focused on the restoration of historic properties, commercial and residential, for nearly 30 years. The house is in a protected historic district filled with a variety of well preserved early homes and the village maintains its character as one built on seafaring and boat building. We have a chance to practice our horticultural skills on a garden rather than the roof of our townhouse. However, there never seems to be enough room for all the trees and shrubs we admire. Mystic is conveniently located and on the Boston/NY Amtrak line. It is wonderful, friendly village with all the requisite services and offers many opportunities for relaxation and intellectual stimulation. Of course, the Mystic Seaport Museum (just a mile walk through the village and across the river) and ready access to to the great sailing waters in the environs were a great draw to us as well. We don't really consider this a vacation home as we live here much of the time. However, we love to share it with others who will care for it in our absence while they explore and enjoy what the area has to offer.

The Unique Benefits of this House

One seems never to have enough time to do what they choose to do while visiting because there is such a great choice. Our home has particular appeal to multi-generation family gatherings for a number of reasons. It is big enough to offer comfortable accommodation with 5 bedrooms, each with private bath, plus the cupola. It is also a short walk to the village so different age groups can roam at ease without relying on a car. Parents can take young children to the playground while others shop or just relax. Couples on annual getaways also like to visit and take Vineyard tours, try the many restaurants, visit the nearby museums, take a day trip to Block Island. It seems guests love to congregate at the house or in the garden visiting and reading and then go off in different directions pursuing a selected activity be it fishing, walking, antiquing, choosing a beach, biking, birding, or attending one of the many local events at the Seaport or in town like the Taste of Mystic or the annual Mystic Outdoor Art Festival.

Terrific family getaway

We rented out this home with little notice - the cheerful owners hustled to get it cleaned on unexpectedly short order. It is beautiful, decorated charmingly, and spacious, with a wide variety of gathering places for different groupings of people to gather, talk, play, and more. Some beds were firmer than others. Old-fashioned games (and newer ones) kept the little ones occupied, as did picking vegetables in the garden. There's a terrific public playground a short walk away, and just walking the houses in the neighborhood is pleasant. A huge, varied reading supply is available throughout the house, as well. The kitchen is extremely well stocked, and we prepared all our meals (for 9) in it without difficult, serving and eating them in the dining room. The gardens and grounds were quite enchanting in late August. It is a five minute walk to historic Mystic, with beautiful views, shops, restaurants, and boats.

Owner response:It is such a pleasure to know that our guests have enjoyed our home and wonderful town. We feel it is a special place that is particularly suitable to multi-generational family groups as there is much of interest withing walking distance for many ages. It is particularly heartening to arrive back to a home as clean as we left it with the feeling it was appreciated as a special retreat. Thank you!

We had such a wonderful Christmas holiday at your Captain's home. When you asked for comments for the guestbook we couldn't resist adding ours. Everything was more than expected. The Christmas tree, garlands & festive decorations ready for our own stockings. Then, the timely snow fell silently. Some thought the ghost of the captain was in charge in the attic. Our sunny walks in the snow from the Mystic Seaport Museum, through the festive village & up the hill to your home brought back warm memories of past family gatherings. Thank you for sharing your lovely, peaceful home with us at this special time of year.
