Italianate Victorian house restored by Architect Owners. Tall ceilings, gracious rooms, large windows, striking detail, hand-planed panel doors, and plank floors evoke a prosperous period in Mystic's Seafaring Heritage. Captain Wheeler sailed ships to China. The original design of his substantial home has been preserved, incorporating new systems and modern conveniences.
An ample center stair hall extends from the welcoming front door to the back wing, providing entry to a large parlor, formal and informal dining room. Each colorful, light-filled room occupies a corner offering views in two directions. Enjoy the fanciful cook's kitchen in the wing with windows on three sides, a small dining table and Vermont Castings gas fireplace.
A limestone floor, maple and soapstone counters, and painted wood cabinets add to its unique character. Features include double sink, self-cleaning double convection ovens, five-burner gas cook top, refrigerator/freezer/ice-maker, and dishwasher. Step directly to a covered south facing porch and sit at a small dining table for a sunrise breakfast or sunset repast.
The upstairs hall, decorated with handmade family quilts and 2 leather lounge chairs, offers entrance to four sunny corner bedrooms with great views. Each has 2 twin beds and private tiled bath with shower or tub/shower. Step down several steps to the queen-size bedroom in the wing with vaulted ceilings and views in three directions. There is an adjacent private bath with tub/shower and separate spiral stair to the first floor. There are no sleeping accommodations on the first floor.
Nearby is a laundry room with full-size washer and dryer. Above all is the "lantern." This romantic bedroom at the top has a double bed, windows on four sides, and views from Sag Harbor, the Hamptons, and Montauk on the tip of Long Island across Fishers Island and Watch Hill Point to Block Island.
Many local attractions provide things to do for all ages making a perfect getaway for family reunions. Relax, enjoy the nautical charm of this historic New England village as a resident in our peaceful, friendly neighborhood. Engage in Mystic's many activities with your friends and family. Take a short walk to village shops, restaurants, world renown Mystic Seaport Museum, Marinelife Aquarium, and Dr. Ballard's Institute for Exploration. Partake in village festivities: Annual Art Fair, Taste of Connecticut, and other events. Sit in the riverside park with an ice cream cone and watch the landmark bascule bridge rise every hour to let the sailing schooners pass.
Take an evening cruise from the Seaport. Paint the harbor, waterfront, marinas, and boatyards with other artists. Ride bikes, kayak, canoe, fish, windsurf, or sail in the river and Fishers Island Sound. Swim and sun at a variety of nearby beaches, tamer ones to the pounding surf of South County.
Walk around the neighborhood with a booklet from the Mystic River Historical Society and learn about Mystic's vibrant seafaring past while enjoying a significantly preserved historic neighborhood. Or, step around the corner and explore the friendly, Richardson Romanesque Library and its offerings on this area.

Owner's Profile
Why the Owner Chose Mystic
We fell in love with this wonderful home in anticipation of being here full time at some point. The historic and architectural character of the town and its buildings held a special appeal to two architects whose practice has focused on the restoration of historic properties, commercial and residential, for nearly 30 years. The house is in a protected historic district filled with a variety of well preserved early homes and the village maintains its character as one built on seafaring and boat building. We have a chance to practice our horticultural skills on a garden rather than the roof of our townhouse. However, there never seems to be enough room for all the trees and shrubs we admire. Mystic is conveniently located and on the Boston/NY Amtrak line. It is wonderful, friendly village with all the requisite services and offers many opportunities for relaxation and intellectual stimulation. Of course, the Mystic Seaport Museum (just a mile walk through the village and across the river) and ready access to to the great sailing waters in the environs were a great draw to us as well. We don't really consider this a vacation home as we live here much of the time. However, we love to share it with others who will care for it in our absence while they explore and enjoy what the area has to offer.
The Unique Benefits of this Sea Captain's House
One seems never to have enough time to do what they choose to do while visiting because there is such a great choice. Our home has particular appeal to multi-generation family gatherings for a number of reasons. It is big enough to offer comfortable accommodation with 5 bedrooms, each with private bath, plus the cupola. It is also a short walk to the village so different age groups can roam at ease without relying on a car. Parents can take young children to the playground while others shop or just relax. Couples on annual getaways also like to visit and take Vineyard tours, try the many restaurants, visit the nearby museums, take a day trip to Block Island. It seems guests love to congregate at the house or in the garden visiting and reading and then go off in different directions pursuing a selected activity be it fishing, walking, antiquing, choosing a beach, biking, birding, or attending one of the many local events at the Seaport or in town like the Taste of Mystic or the annual Mystic Outdoor Art Festival.
