'The Powell House' was built in 1885 by Civil War General Powell. He purchased 1100 acres at the foothills of the 'Blue Ridge' mountains and chose this location to take advantage of a 360 degree view and breezes that flow through the windows even on hot summer days. The perfect location to make priceless family memories.A total renovation was completed in spring of 2012 to preserve the integrity of the original farmhouse while adding additional rooms to take full advantage of the surrounding mountains. Each of the three large porches offer their own spectacular view. Evenings on the thirty foot front porch hosts a nightly summer light show by resident fire flies that take any adult back to childhood! The upstairs 24 foot porch offers breathtaking views of the North Georgia Mountains from handcrafted glider rockers that are hard to leave. From the 24 X 24 farmhouse kitchen/dining area that seats eleven to the family room that offers incredible views, there is ample room to create memories that will last a lifetime. The master bedroom with gas fireplace and private bathroom is located downstairs, as well as, a large living room with gas fireplace, additional half bath, farmhouse kitchen/dining room and washer/dryer. Upstairs are two bedrooms; one with a queen bed, another room with a set of twin beds, there is a sofa bed in the family room and another full bath for the upstairs. A baby bed is in the twin bedroom and a highchair in the kitchen for the smallest in the family to enjoy.
The acre property and house is surrounded by boxwood hedges, thus where the name of the street originated. Privacy in a country setting yet walking distance to the famous 'Dillard House' restaurant and over a dozen antique shops.

We were thrilled as we drove up to the "POWELL HOUSE" to see how outstanding it was. The pictures do not do the house justice. The yard is very private, enclosed with beautiful boxwood shrubs. As we walked in the side door, the abundant kitchen/dining was gorgeous. We loved that it was stocked with everything we needed for our stay. I personally loved the farmhouse sink, very authentic. As we went through the house, every room was decorated to perfection and very clean. Every room has a beautiful view with lots of windows. We selected the downstairs bedroom with fireplace and king size bed with it's own private bath. The fireplace was a very romantic touch for the room. The upstairs family room was very cozy and comfortable where we enjoyed watching movies on the huge screen TV . We also enjoyed looking through your selection of books and movies there. The back porch was probably our favorite spot to sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy the view of the mountains. It is a very private property, so you can totally relax here. I also loved the fact that the location is prime. We visited several antique shops very close by, and of course the famous "Dillard House". The food is delicious there and very plentiful. We rode the horses there and the views were spectacular from the trail. Talulah Gorge was very close by, with several nature trails to walk. In Clayton (only a few miles away) we went to Kingwood day spa to treat ourselves. We were looking for a peaceful relaxing place to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and this was perfect. The house was great for a romantic getaway or for a large family. Look no further for your perfect mountain retreat, because this is it!

From the moment we came upon this home, our family was amazed by its beauty and grace. We all felt as if the spirit of the Powell home welcomed us from the time we exited our vehicle and entered in through the beautifully decorated dining/kitchen area and throughout our stay. The views of the mountains and the surrounding yard was so tranquil and able to be viewed from several areas in the home. Even though we all reviewed the listing and pictures on VRBO when making our decision to stay here, as we entered each room, all of us (ages from 5 to 62) were still taken back by how attractively decorated each room was put together and how at home it made our family feel. The beds and bedding were very comfortable and we slept solid. Everyone was pleased and that is hard to do in our family. Our granddaughter wanted to know why we couldn't just sell our homes in Florida and stay there forever! As we watched all the birds and big fat squirrels playing around with the woodpecker pecking at the tree, this made for a very relaxing time. The morning that we were leaving it started snowing and that brought out even more charm for us...being from FL this was our first time really seeing snow. Also, we loved how not only were there amenities for the adults, but also for the children. That means alot when your traveling all together, all ages. All of us felt at home and really relaxed for our weekend stay. In fact, for the rest of our trip, nobody was satisfied with our other arrangements and kept referring back to "The Powell House". This home is one listing on VRBO that you will be so very pleased with. Very accurate listing, very clean and well maintained, very easy to find, and the owners are very easy to contact. Lot's of things to do in Dillard and some surrounding areas. We recommend going to Tallulah Falls Gorge and hike and/or visit the museum, Goats on the Roof is a cute place to stop too. Of course if you visit this home, you have to eat at the DIllard House and visit their petting zoo. In addition, The Cupboard was good to eat at too. If not for eating out, the home is equiped with every gizmo and gadget that you can cook up any meal whatsoever! So much to do from hiking, biking, horseback riding, rafting, eating, shopping...you name it, you can spend plenty of time here doing these things or just spend some quiet time at the house.. We will definitely be back and recommend this home.

This home exceeded my family's expectations..and then some! It is AMAZING! From the modern updates, spacious rooms, big yard, and incredible mountains views..this home is now my family's favorite vacation spot! We will definitely be back for additional visits! My 4 year old daughter cried and unpacked her bags on our last day! And the owners are very friendly and helpful (I know my husband emailed her with several small tedious questions!) The house is also located right in the middle of Dillard, which gives you great access to several shops, parks and restaurants!

THANKS We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed your home in Dillard. It was an AWESOME time with our family and your home is absolutely beautiful. We had so much fun....our children fell in love with it as well. This was truly a time that will be cherished for many years to come but I will have to say that going on vacation with a 2 year old grand-daughter is a job! My wife said that she had never experienced a vacation...getting up at the crack of dawn...like we did on this trip with the grand baby . But once again it was a great time of relaxation with our family and we can’t thank you and your husband enough for allowing us to stay there. Being a former contractor....I want you to know that you did a wonderful job on restoring the home! All of us enjoyed the swings on the front porch but I have to say that our grand-daughter probably enjoyed them more than anyone else! Take care and may God bless you and your family!

We have been looking forward to going to Dillard again. Last year, around Christmas we went to the famous Dillard House and had the best time, we stayed right there on the property. And asking the locals questions about the area. We discovered this old "Powell House" on the hill. We walked over to the construction site. My wife fell in Love with it. She asked me to get some information on the place. So here we are, a few months later and turns out we are one of the first people to stay at this beautiful old home. I surprised my wife with a weeks stay at the Powell House. We could not be any happier. The bed we had was so soft and the rooms were clean. The hardwood floors are beauiful. We had our morning coffee outside on the upper deck. Watching the birds, rabbits, and nature at its best. We walked and shopped at the antique stores right down the road. We had breakfast at the Cupboard Cafe a couple times and on Thursday night its ALL YOU CAN EAT SHRIMP (my favorite). We ate at the Dillard House a few times with us always bringing back leftovers. Back at the "POWELL HOUSE" we all went to the upstairs porch rockers and just watched the setting sun on the mountains and saw many geese flying into the corn field. What a sight! We played some of the games that they had there until midnight. This was the best birthday surprise for my wife and me. I'm hoping to get back over there for my birthday in October. I can't tell you in words how GREAT this vacation was. The place was clean and properly supplied with all that we needed. I give it two thumbs up. Thank you Miss Judy, you did an excellant job and you have a beauiful place. Do returning quests get a discount on my next visit in October?

This was our first trip to the mountains of Georgia and we were quite excited to drive up to this charming historical home in the heart of Dillard! The home is nestled in the valley of Georgia's mountains but at the same time surrounded by the quaint atmosphere of a small town. We were able to walk to various historical sites including The Dillard House and were welcomed by neighbors living in the surrounding neighborhood. There are also a myriad of quaint restaurants within walking distance to choose from. Our days were filled with adventures in Dillard as well as all the plethora of nearby parks, gorges, and trails. The Powell House is a beautiful and tastefully renovated historical home that offers both the charm and feel of a farmhouse but at the same time the comforts of modern conveniences. My husband and children loved running around the property playing ball and catching fireflies, giving me wonderful moments of tranquility...sipping coffee on the back porch as I absorb the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Living in Florida, coming to Dillard and staying at the Powell House was a wonderful balance of a quiet retreat filled with days of outdoor fun and adventure, making our trip a memorable family vacation. We are grateful to have such an experience.
