Bedford cottage description
FIVE OAKS is a 1940 bungalow-style cottage on nearly 2 secluded acres just minutes from downtown Bedford, and just a short drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Smith Mt. Lake, Lynchburg, or Roanoke. The 2 bedroom, 1 bath house has spacious rooms with traditional decor, heart-pine floors, a modern kitchen with vintage flair, and a huge front porch with views of a pasture and pond below. Free satellite TV and wireless broadband Internet are provided. Dogs of all sizes are welcome with an additional pet fee, but please, NO CATS. The house has keyless entry for ease of access and security; a unique code will be provided in the reservation acceptance email.
Enjoy a cool drink on the expansive front porch, or take a walk along the hayfield at dawn or dusk to see wildlife. Pass through the grove at back to have a family meal on the picnic tables. Curl up on the sofa with a good book, or play badminton in the backyard (racquets and shuttlecocks are on the back porch). Run 1/4 mi. laps on the drive, or bike across the road. And, of course, take a trip to enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Blue Ridge, including the Winery Trail. When you're tired from all your adventures, the master bedroom has a queen bed with plush mattress and your choice of pillows. The second bedroom has two beds, one full and one twin, with Teddy bears, books, rocking horse, and a toy box, sure to amuse young children for hours (they've been kid tested!). Maximum capacity is 2 adults and 2 children.
We want guests to enjoy every minute of their stay at Five Oaks, so we provide similar amenities to a standard hotel room, including clean, fresh linens, tea and coffee w/coffee maker, basic toiletries, and plenty of paper products. The kitchen is fully equipped, and the bath is updated in vintage style. In addition to wireless Internet, some mobile networks such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon can be accessed from the house, so web browsing via your smartphone is also possible. The stereo has an MP3 adapter so you can bring your own music to enjoy. After each guest checks out, the house is thoroughly cleaned and inspected. We hope you choose to stay with us and experience a little of the charm of days gone by, with all the electronic conveniences of today.

My husband, parents and I enjoyed our stay while we were attending a family wedding in the area. Your home was clean and comfortable and the location worked out well for us.

Nice & cozy. Probably our only dislike is the initial smell when you first walk in. It smelled a little musty. You got used it after a while. Overall though, great place and location!!!

Owner response: Sorry there was a musty smell. We're replacing the dehumidifier in 2014. Dampness is sometimes an issue in rainy, cooler weather -- comes from having a cellar under the house. Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay overall.
Nice place in a nice setting.

We loved our stay at Five Oaks! The house was so cozy and cute just like in the online photos. The owner couldn't have been easier to reserve with. I didn't need half the stuff I brought because they had thought of everything. All the beds were comfy too and my kids loved the house especially my younger son who kissed it when we left. The house is close to town but situated by a farm at the end of a drive. The yard was nice and big and the front porch was too. I was happy we could also bring our dog and she loved it. The neighbor has a friendly dog and she was so nice, helped us with things ti do even directed us to a local swimming hole. Even though it rained a lot we still walked around the gorgeous Bedford downtown and saw all those great houses, went to Roanoke to the mall and a movie and visited the Natural Bridge zoo which was great...elephant rides, baby tigers and many other animals. We love the liberty station restaurant in Bedford and also the Blue Ridge Bagels right nearby. Too bad I didn't try them earlier! They like everyone were so friendly and the donuts were incredible like Duck Donuts near Nag's Head. The iced coffee also very affordable was great. We thank you for a wonderful stay and will be back soon! I would and will recommend Five Oaks to everyone.

Owner response: Thank you for the very informative review. I try to anticipate my guests' needs; it's great to hear that everything you expected and more was already in the house. It was so sweet to read that your son kissed the house when you left! That's how our daughter feels about the house, too. The recommendation to family and friends is also much appreciated. Come back anytime!
We had an absolute great time sharing your home!! Your property is beautiful and so relaxing and the kids loved playing in the yard. Thank you again.

Owner response: Glad you had a relaxing stay at Five Oaks! It's always good to hear that everyone, especially the kids, had a great time. Thank you for the review and hope you can come back again soon.
My husband and I just spent three nights/four days at Five Oaks. It is easy to get to but seems like it is out in the country. Our dog enjoyed roaming around the property, and the house has everything you need for time away from it all. We enjoyed the proximity to historical sites (such as the D Day Memorial and Poplar Forest) and hiking (The Peaks of Otter and McAfee's Knob on the Appalachian Trail). We enjoyed a great dinner at Liberty Station in downtown Bedford, and also utilized the great kitchen at Five Oaks. This is a great place to get away and relax, and there is just enough to do in the area that you won't get bored.

About the owner: We're a military family, so we've moved around a lot, but we always love to come home to our house in Bedford.
Why the Owner Chose Bedford:
We purchased the house as our future retirement home, after many years of vacationing in the Bedford, VA area. We especially liked this house for its vintage charm, with rural seclusion yet easy access to shopping, dining, and activities.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The massive white oak beside the house has always held a special place in our hearts, so much so that we named the place Five Oaks in honor of all the beautiful oak trees on the property. The serene front porch is another favorite spot for us, to read, rest, watch for wildlife, or stargaze at night. We hope you will enjoy them too!
