Washington Island cabin description
Welcome back in time and enjoy a rare and remarkable retreat in the midst of Washington Island’s wooded shore front in peaceful Detroit Harbor. The cabin was originally constructed in the 1880's in Michigan and rebuilt on these three quiet wooded acres in the bay one hundred years later. The log cabin is a tranquil sanctuary from the fast pace of our modern day world. You can see and hear a wide range of waterfowl and birds as well as watch the boats and white swans glide across the water. It is truly “North of the Tension Line”.
From leisure time indoors to exciting outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, swimming, or enjoying the talent at the Performing Art Center, Red Barn, or other musical venues, it is a place for creativity, meditation and relaxation. At the end of the day, sit on the porch in a rocking chair and discuss the day’s activities or plan tomorrow’s adventures from all that Washington Island has to offer. Make a campfire for hot dogs and s'mores at the fire pit. There is an electric plug on the tree stump if you wish to connect an electronic device.
The Washington Island Rec Center offers daily, weekly or monthly passes for its pool, hot tub, workout room and showers, all at very reasonable rates. Enjoy the Jacobson, Farm and Maritime Museums as well as the shops, train rides, Petting Zoo, Art and Nature Center, climb the mountain stairs to view the horizon, join in the musical venues around the Island, take a trip on the Karfi Ferry to historic Rock Island State Park.
The front porch is the length of the cabin and has four rocking chairs and two Adirondac chairs. The kitchen is complete with pots, pans, dishes, glassware, silverware, and paper products.Towels and linens are provided. Electric stove and oven, microwave, and frig with freezer but no ice maker. The first floor has a half bath and 'great room. Two French doors lead out to the covered porch facing the lake. The upstairs has a master with queen bed and full bathroom. The dorm has four twin beds. There are ceiling fans in both bedrooms. DirecTv satellite is available on both living room and dorm televisions. There is a DVD player and some CD movies in the living room.
Local telephone service is available but WIFI may be accessed at a couple restaurants and Library at no charge.
In the garage is a cold water washer and dryer for your use. In the shade of the woods is a dog kennel for Fido when you are out and about.

Yes, your well-behaved dog is welcome. As a hotel quoted in its brochure and copied here: 'We've never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware, or pictures off the walls. Never had to evict a dog for being drunk or disorderly. And never had a dog run out on a bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at our cabin. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you're welcome to stay here, too.'...moreless

Family Reunion Up the Door Peninsula to the Bitter End
Family Reunion Up the Door Peninsula to the Bitter End
Wow. The White Swan was the PERFECT place for us. Comfortably fit 6 people, both inside and on the large porch overlooking Detroit Harbor. Vast lawn running down to the water provided plenty of space for the dog to romp -- and made us wish we'd brought croquet or bocce sets. We parked our canoe by the dock and took it out multiple times a day. The driveway out to the road was bordered by lush forest and flowers and it was an easy walk to the Washington Heritage trail and the DCLT Detroit Harbor trail. The house was gorgeous and fully stocked with anything we needed. The bats outside took care of mosquitoes, making outdoor sitting lovely. The fire pit was a wonderful treat.

I really do not want to share a nice review because I want to keep this gem all to myself. But, to be completely honest, this is one of the nicest places we have stayed in Door county with the nicest hosts. I cannot wait to go again!!!!!!!

Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: We purchased this cabin because of its serenity and privacy while still a beautiful setting on the lake.
Why the Owner Chose Washington Island:
It is a 'Little House on the Bay' as opposed to the prairie. It is situated two vacant three-acre lots away from our house so close to maintain but far enough away to give both of us lots of room to play outdoor games, make noise and enjoy nature's bounties. There are at least four vacant three-acre lots on the other side of the cabin allowing for maximum privacy.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We are about a quarter of a mile away from the ferry dock which makes this cabin close to a restaurant, fast-food pizza/chicken, a marina, bike/moped/segway/car rentals and two wonderful shops.
