This home is so special and it starts where it is located. It has tremendous curb appeal, as it sits nestled at the top of a hill way back up off the road. It's very difficult to see the house from the road, but once you're on the curving driveway, it takes you up to the house where the large center steps lead you up to a huge welcoming porch. Here you can sit and chat and look at the distant mountains and enjoy the scenery. I have always loved large open porches (probably something from my childhood when people actually sat out on them and they were places of great socializing!) The lower portion of the house is the rental area; 2500 square feet to enjoy! There are great windows and sliding doors that lead into the large room which includes the kitchen and family room; this room is about 550 sq ft and there's plenty of room to hang out there and different corners to do things. The bedrooms flank the living areas and they are all large, airy, well lit, and have hardwood floors. The whole place has a very European feeling to it. The two main front bedrooms have glass doors that lead out to their own separate patios; the one to the east catches the morning sun and it's got an old wall with charming beds of flowers behind it- what a great place to have your coffee! The one on the west side is on a blue slate terrace and is covered by cool trumpet vines and morning glories, so it is more shady and cool. To the west gardens you will find the raised beds where I raise all the veggies for the summer and we have the sunken firepit where you can enjoy a bonfire, roast your own hamburgers/hotdogs over a wood fire (oh there is NOTHING that beats eating food cooked over wood! so much better than charcoal and don't even talk to me about a gas grill! lol!!) Caution must be taken of course if conditions are too dry and fires are forbidden because of drought conditions. This summer it has been very dry, so we haven't made many fires recently.
Other qualities that are unique to this property: It has two full bathrooms, a huge furnace storage area, a huge laundry room, large storage closets (that could house skis, bikes, equipment, etc) The 'feeling' of the house is, I guess one would call, 'shabby chic'. I love old stuff and I love how things look when the paint starts coming off and shows it's patina...I believe the Japanese call it Wabi-Sabi. Well, I guess that would describe how things are in my apartment/house. Each bedroom has nice big windows and lots of light, and every one of them, except one, has a huge closet for storage. All bedrooms have comfy queen size beds and the purple master has a king. The bedrooms are categorized (for us) by colors: there's the 'green room', the smoky 'purple' room, the 'lavender and yellow' room, and the 'blue' room-- all the walls are old fashioned plaster and we have big beams going across a partial section of the apartment. It's a really funky, different set up as far as layout but what we have always loved is that it's a place that naturally brings people together to hang out together, but then we all have our own space to go to when we want to be quiet.
New this year is the possibility of renting the upstairs apartment area! This area is just gorgeous and includes 2 huge bedrooms w/ large closets and shares a small eastern balcony for morning coffee. The upper floor also houses the MASTER SUITE (with king-size bed) which has its own bath, and huge 24 x 12 terrace facing the west and south, lots of windows, light, and breeze. There is a 550 sq. ft loft-like living room which gives onto a south facing deck that has amazing views of the mountains. A large and spacious kitchen is adjacent to this area. Included is a full laundry and 1 full bathroom. Included as part of this apartment is 1 downstairs room which has a room that can accommodate 2 in twin beds. This apartment has a separate entrance in the rear of the building so there is no disturbing the people in the lower apartment. The 2 apartments can be connected by simply opening the door between the stairway connecting the upper and lower levels and the home can be rented as one entire house for a large family summer reunion or a place to be together for the whole summer!
You will love taking walks around the property too-- you can walk back up the hill behind up to the trails through the woods and up to the lake that sits up behind the house. I haven't seen many people up there recently-- maybe it's just too hot! I know there are some great swimming holes down the road from here off of Hurlburt Road and off of Route 23 there is Green River where lots of people go to swim. I know of a much more private place to go too, but it's too long to explain in this description. There is plenty of wildlife around here to enjoy; especially the birds. They are beautiful and abundant. I have all the songbirds and red-tailed hawks you could desire!
The house is privately located at the top of a hill and enjoys a lovely view of Mount Everett to the south and Catamount to the West. Although the house is extremely private and peaceful (we have no neighbors!), it is strategically located and only a few minutes from downtown Great Barrington and all other Berkshire attractions....moreless
The living room is really part of the 'grand room' which comprises the kitchen area. There is a large sofa,2 large overstuffed chairs, and a couple of smaller chairs. It seats 7 very comfortably....moreless

I've always considered the Berkshires the summer cultural cradle for New Yorkers and Bostonians, and it IS true that the Berkshires are particularly known for its amazing cultural attractions: there is famous Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, featuring visiting conductors and musicians from all over the world; there are renowned theaters such as the Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare and Company, and the critically acclaimed Barrington Stage Company, not to mention numerous other smaller theater groups which bring the stage alive during the summer and fall seasons. There is Jacob's Pillow which is a showcase for the most famous dancers and dance companies in the world! One of the most unknown 'jewels' of the Berkshires is the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. My family from L.A. and Seattle could not believe that such a sophisticated collection of (especially) French art was hidden in the 'middle of nowhere', right here in our Berkshires. Monet, Renoir, Pissaro, Turner, Homer, Sargent, Remington...just a little inkling of the many artists that are represented in this amazing collection. Don't forget that we are also proud of the heritage of the famous Norman Rockwell museum (practically the father of the 'face of Americanism') Located in the quintessential New England town of Stockbridge, the Norman Rockwell museum houses the historic collection Saturday Evening Post illustration paintings that made Rockwell famous. There are so many other specialty museums to explore! For the culinary experts there are fabulous restaurants in every corner of every town in the Berkshires and there is something for everyone! There is probably the best sushi restaurant I have ever experienced anywhere right here in Great Barrington-- we have Mexican, Thai, great Indian restaurants, and of course Italian, Greek, and 'fusion' restaurants too. There are great bicycle circuits to enjoy right here from the house (my favorite!) and you can take a quick 15 mile circuit that takes you right through one of the prettiest valleys of the Berkshires or you can take a long 35-40 mile loop down into the southern area of Sheffield which takes you through some flatter, quieter fields and streams. There are myriad hiking and walking trails, as well as lakes and rivers to canoe and kayak. There is beauty all around you here in the Berkshires, everywhere you look, at during every season. You just have to get yourself here to enjoy it!
Year Purchased: 1996
About the owner: I have lived in the Berkshires since 1992 and have loved being here very much. It certainly was a big change after having lived in France for 18 years! I found my place here in the Great Barrington community and have worked in the local high school as Art teacher as well as Spring Musical Director for over 16 years. I love working with young people and the creative outlet of the theater is one of my lifelong passions.
Why the Owner Chose Great Barrington:
When I bought my home in 1996 people thought I was crazy! It was at that time serving as the Eagleton School for young people with severe emotional problems. There were plexiglass windows, crash-bar doors and exit signs! Snow came in under the doors and there were linoleum everywhere. However, I saw a vision underneath the 'bones' of the structure as it used to be an old barn built in 1900. I put a lot of sweat equity into the house (not to mention bucks! :) and turned it into a pretty sweet property and still retains the charm and country feel of its original structure as a barn. I love the fact that the house is so sunny and light, faces south, east and west and is protected on the north side by a mountain so the winter winds are buffered. No neighbors provide enough quiet so that the spring peepers strike up a chorus that never fails to enchant and by June the lightening bugs (fireflies to others who aren't from the Midwest..!) are out in full force with their fairy magic. I was totally awestruck with this property, fell in love with the view, and took it from there. It's 'a lot of house' and my girls and family have enjoyed it immensely. I'm anxious for others to come and enjoy their vacations here too.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
As I said above, when I first saw this house, came upstairs and saw the view through the (then) plexiglass windows and saw the mountains beyond and all of the light spilling in, I did fall in love with the place. When I bought the place, there was one lonely begonia by the front step. Now there are hosta lining the whole yard, Redbud and weeping cherry, lilacs, wisteria, alethea, weeping cedar, tinkerbell lilac, weigeila, spirea, vast perrenial gardens and we are surrounded by flowering bushes, greenery and flowers. I also LOVE the fact that I am six minutes from my work and literally can be in the heart of Great Barrington within 3-4 minutes. Division Street is central to G.B.: you can go to the north side of town and not have to go thru all the town traffic or you can go to the south side of town and miss all the traffic. (as there are large shopping mall areas on both the north and south sides as well as the center of town). Location is really crucial here as it is close to everything, yet it is well away from the road and very private and quiet.
