About this property

Central San Diego Quiet Retreat one bedroom condo close to all

We're located in a very quiet, centrally-located neighborhood close to beaches, bays, airport (SAN), downtown, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, La Jolla, Tijuana, Balboa Park, world-class shopping at Fashion Valley and Mission Valley Malls, and away from the congestion, noise, traffic, and difficult-to-impossible parking situations so common to other parts of San Diego. The house is a small and cozy 1 bedroom 1 bath, with front elevated 'veranda' with views to Mount Soledad in La Jolla, and sliver ocean views. Great for viewing Sea World fireworks. Bedroom is good sized with ample closet space. We bought a premium memory foam mattress for ourselves, and liked it so much, we bought one for this property. If you are used to memory foam, you should like this bed! Free and easy parking and wifi. FULL KITCHEN/WIFI/EASY PARKING.
The living room is quite large, with a very large couch and cozy chair with ottoman. The living room is open to the kitchen, and feels quite open and expansive. Kitchen is pretty big, with lots of room for chopping and dinner prep. Kitchen is fully equipped, and has blender, microwave, toaster, pots and pans, full size fridge, gas stove and oven, coffee maker, etc.
House is fairly quiet. Unlike Golden Hill, Downtown, Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, UTC, University City, and parts of La Jolla, we have NO 'fly over' jet traffic. Nearest freeway is about 1/4-1/2 mile away, and we NEVER hear freeway traffic. We're located very close to Tecolote Canyon, which is a natural preserve (no roads). Street we're located on 'doubles back' to main roads just past the house (no 'thru' traffic). House is located a good twenty or so feet 'higher' than street, and set back a good ways from street. Neighborhood was constructed before WWII, before the current density set in; parking in front of the house is free, secure and never difficult.
Back yard is very large and quiet, with yard sloping down westward (great for viewing sunsets), with lots of fruit trees. Nice shaded redwood deck off of kitchen with chairs and benches, great for reading or enjoying a coffee or beer.
House has all hard surfaces; either hardwood floor, laminate, or faux wood- no carpet, so you can breathe easier. Bedroom has ceiling fan and lots of breeze from the west, so it's never hot. Living room is large and open, with sunset views from couch or bar, and views of mt soledad to the NW. There's a tiny ocean view from the front door. Dividing kitchen from living room is a small tiled bar, designed and created by legendary local artists Marcus Gutierrez and Fernando Apodaca (same artists that did Pearl Jam's 'Life Wasted' video). Bar has storage inside for bottles or pots and pans. Wifi access on property.
If you would prefer to visit lots of areas of san diego but would like to return to a quiet and safe neighborhood, easy parking, and a very tranquil apartment with a 'country type' feel to the backyard, you will probably like it here; if you're wanting to walk to nightlife and cafes and bars and breakfast joints, you might be disappointed. While we're very close to downtown, little italy, old town, sea world, san diego zoo and balboa park, we do recommend either renting a car or using uber or lyft to get around, as the city buses are pretty slow.
Other facts about the apartment-
1) We clean the apartment ourselves; we do not employ cleaning services that have no 'stake' in the guest experience.
2) The bed is a premium mattress, and both mattress and box spring are zipped into 'anti-bed-bug' covers. These covers are expensive (around $400 a set) and are woven so tightly bed bugs are unable to penetrate the fabric to live in either the mattress or box spring. These are not plastic, but fabric (you will not notice them on the bed- they do not make noise). Not something nice to think about, but if you're traveling to an unfamiliar apartment that has been used by others.....it's something you should think about.
3) We use premium bath tissue, not the single ply commonly found in hotels.
4)You have cable tv and dvd player....about 75 channels on cable.

This was the best experience I’ve had on VRBO. Scott’s place was fantastic. I hope to stay again.
The place had everything we needed for a long stay. The neighborhood is great, parking is plentiful, and there was even a cat to greet us everyday! I had absolutely zero issues. I hope to stay here in the future it was so great.

One of the best!
We use VRBO routinely. This listing was 100% accurate, wonderfully comfortable, and the hosts were so responsive (I messed up remote/tv within minutes of check in, which was super easy, and the host arrived within like 5 minutes to fix my error). During our stay, we felt very supported by our hosts and safe in their beautiful neighborhood. If we ever find ourselves needing accommodations in SD in the future, we will definitely reach out to this property. One more thing, the listing does not mention the wonderful backyard patio. Every day, my husband spent his morning out there relaxing in the morning sun!

Why they chose this property

House is elevated, and has great views of Mt Soledad to the west.
Also, this is the best area to live in San Diego, because we have the best climate in San Diego! We live close enough to the ocean and bays to get that cooling breeze; however, on a lot of days when the beach is foggy and freezing ('june gloom' 'may gray' etc), we're basking in the sunshine! In addition, this neighborhood is very quiet, with few bars (direct contrast to the beach, with a bar on every corner), no beach traffic, no noise, no congestion. This neighborhood was established in the 1940's and 1950's, when San Diego was not yet crowded; as a result, homes in this area have generous yards and space- we're not living 'nose to nose' like homes in the beach area. Free parking and wifi.

What makes this property unique

This could be the most affordable place to stay in San Diego- if you're not a millionaire, and don't want to spend two to five thousand dollars for a week at the beach, consider this property- it's quite a bit cheaper, with easy beach access, but away from the beach noise, congestion, and large numbers of drinking establishments located in all the beach neighborhoods. We are also extremely close to Balboa Park, North Park (San Diego Microbrewery capital), South Park, Downtown, Little Italy, Old Town, Mission San Diego, Petco Park, Qualcomm stadium, SDSU and UCSD. I love this place because it's so quiet. I lived at the beach for years, but the noise, traffic, congestion, the high rent, and the high concentration of bars and drinking establishments made me move. At the beach i'd wake up to leaf blowers, lawn mowers, honking horns, people coming out of bars at 2 am, surfers getting ready at 6am, and other distractions. If you love quiet and sunshine, this area is hard to beat. Also, living here, traffic is never a problem. We also have first rate Mexican, Thai and Vietnamese fare here in the neighborhood.
