Il Castello was built by the Counts San Bonifacio in front of the original building, because of the need to extend to local stores, stables, for the production of agricultural activities and for courts. Part of these premises were culled when, in 1882, following the route of the Adige, the State ordered to form impressive embankments. Inside the yard of the Castle there was the 'Column of Justice ', the symbol of the Counts of Judicial Jurisdiction in the Veneta Republic. Due to a lightning strike the statue was shattered and, in 1786, it was replaced by a block of stone on top that recalls the restoration. You access the Castle by a magnificent handmade iron gate that takes you to a spectacular park of two acres wide with a romantic little lake. You enter the Castle-Palazzina through a Venetian-Gothic door that takes you into a sublime living room with fireplace interconnecting with a medieval dining room.
The history: This feature ancient Castle, restored in the early twentieth Century, in Romanesque-Venetian style, has tied much of his life to San Bonifacio family and feud of this family on these lands.
The extensive research conducted by local historians agree that San Bonifacio produced in 1433 the feudal jurisdiction over Villa Bartolomea, decided to erect a noble home in this country and the result was without doubt the construction of this 'building' that rises in Altavilla near the Adige river. A splendid example in Venetian-Gothic style of the fifteenth Century that is still possible to admire and which coincides, as style and date of construction, with the arrival in the village of the San Bonifacio family. The oldest part of the Castle is the central part of the façade features, a porrale above which there is an elegant three-mullioned window. Windows blown glass and embedded with lead in old Venetian style help to give elegance to the whole complex.
On the right, a large angular balcony, complete the corner solution of the building in which background stands the mighty tower. The façade is characterized by rows of Gothic windows axes metrically arranged by number.
The interior is characterized by large living rooms adorned with artistic fireplaces and decorated doors. Scenographic the large hall inside the garden that leads to the main floor. The complex was formed by other buildings, La 'Fratina' used to give housing to the friars on way during Lent. There is also a church and the characteristic 'giazzara' to keep the ice. Beside the villa there was also a port for ships that were transporting goods and products from Verona to Polesine and vice versa.
For some centuries, the Castle was a rich and luxurious stay. It was given to its former splendor in 1935 by Count San. Bonifacio. The entire complex is composed of manor house, majestic park, garden and an agricultural fund, which stretches along the banks of the Adige river: nearby there are also the square labside and the bell tower of the first Romanesque church of the XII-XIII Century. Some local historians believe that although the ancient Castle was built on an even older building, probably used as a permanent presence along the Adige river. The large park was built following the style of the English park and it is complete with pond, bridge and paths.
At the disposal of clients, small soccer field and riding field.

I have to say that I agree pretty much with the reviews on here. The castle has a very rustic charm and we all fell in love with the place. Mr Salvatore was extremely helpful and very friendly, and his dog "Puppo" made friends with our kids. I imagine that the building both indoors and out, looks pretty much the same as when it was first built and one can only wonder at what this place has witnessed. I found the bed to be extremely comfortable and the surrounding area so peaceful that I remarked to my wife that I hadn't slept so well in years. The walk by the river was lovely, and there is a track to the trattoria which takes about 5 minutes to walk to, I thoroughly recommend it, although if you're expecting bog standard pasta and pizza you won't find it. The food was of an exceptionally high quality and the bottle of prosecco that they have on their list was the most delicious I've ever tasted. There is a bakers within a couple of minutes walk from the gate and a local market on a friday morning where you can buy the local produce or just buy a bag of freshly fried calamari and prawns to take away. There is also a decent sized "familia" supermarket a five minute drive away where you can get all the provisions you'll need. As for location, Verona is about half an hour away, Venice about 90 minutes and lake Garda about 40 minutes - so it was great. Lake garda is stunning, We were taken aback by the town of Peschiera which gave us our first glimpse of the lake, only to have that surpassed by visiting Sermione which is stunningly beautiful. All in all we found the castle utterly charming, we enjoyed it so much that by the end of our week we really felt so at home, we didn't want to leave. I would love to go back - hopefully one day I will. If not, the good memories of the place will last a lifetime.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

2 words, Outstanding Property!! It has to be said that the Italian authenticity is lost in the photos. In the flesh the castle oozes mid last century quality and charm. In layout, construction, and location. The solid wood interior beams, doors and fittings etc resound in an opulence lost through modern building teqniques. The scale of the floorspace and vertical space internally is truly awe inspiring. As is the quality and scale of internal furnishings, paintings etc. There is also a substantial (modern) living quarter complete with plasma tv, internet computer, laundry and cooking facilities. The private grounds are stunning, complete with patio areas, diving swimming pool, grassed football court, stables, horse parade ground, and gardens. There is also outdoor living quarters complete with several antique (useable) bicycles. As for a holiday rental? Unforgettable!! Lake garda, Verona, Venice etc are within easy drive, but the Villa Bartolomea town location is as rural as Northern Italy can be. This is Molto Bene holiday rental. Do it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Our group of 12 had a great time at Il Castello. To be honest, the property is a little more rustic than you might expect from the photographs, but it is so unique. The owner, Mr. Salvatore, is charming and helpful. The castle is large. It features two kitchens, one upstairs, one down. The upstairs kitchen is more user friendly, but we used the one downstairs and had great dinners in the medieval dining room, which were very special. (FYI, dishwasher is upstairs.) Every corner of the place speaks to its antiquity and character. Some beds are a bit hard, but I actually liked that. It added to the sense of stepping back in time. It is important to understand, before you arrive, that this place is VERY old...there is some peeling plaster, etc., but we found this quite lovely and have some gorgeous photographs that showcase the antiquity of the place. The light is so lovely coming into the front room in the afternoon. Sometimes I felt as if I had stepped into a living Vermeer painting. Our guests were from Italy, Switzerland, Germany, London, Israel and the US - well traveled and used to staying in villas and rented estates. A few prefer a more 'serviced' establishment with daily maid service, etc. I like the privacy and self-containment of being "at home" on our own. We enjoyed the gardens and pool immensely. We took our morning coffees outside (or walked to a sidewalk cafe in the nearby town). We relaxed in a way you could never do at a hotel. The pool itself is spotlessly clean, as are all linens, towels, etc. There are horses which the owner let our 'serious' equestrians ride. (My understanding is if you are not experienced there is a horse-hire establishment nearby.) There's a funny miniature horse that we nicknamed "Pharmacy", because he likes to get out of the gate and wander into town and was last found visiting the pharmacist. The surrounding countryside is pastoral and very Italian. There are some fabulous restaurants-one that we walked to, through the fields, that was outstanding. We took day trips to Verona, Lake Garda (Sermione) and other spots. You can't beat the location if you want the option of quite time as well as excellent site-seeing. Don't be put off by the noisy pigeons/doves that live in the eaves, if you can help it. While the castle could probably use a bit of refreshment after all these centuries, I loved its charm and unique sense of place. We all fell in love with Mr. Salvatore, too. I definitely hope to return to Il Castello.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.
