High Shelter Farm: Ascutney Mountain View Charmer
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
High Shelter Farm is a 270-acre sheep farm offering complete privacy from the road, lovely views of Mount Ascutney, and on-site hosts to your Vermont vacation. The guest apartment is the ground floor of the farmhouse; your hosts live on the upper floors.
The four-room guest apartment is 1200 square feet, with one bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room. Relax and get lost in the hammock under the sugar maples. The comfortable apartment has everything you could possibly need, just bring your toothbrush! Fully equipped sunny kitchen, high thread count linens, king-sized bed, private patio, grill and firepit. Washer and dryer, guide books to the area, a DVD library provided. The guest apartment has a separate entry by footpath in the summer; enter through the main house when snow is on the ground.
Continually being updated, our bright sunny rental has a huge jetted tub for relaxing, a wood stove for chilly evenings, and the charm of Vermont-made furnishings and artwork.
Swimming pool is open all summer and is shared with the main house. Pond and stream on property. Gather your own eggs from the laying flock, pick your own flowers from the garden, pour our maple syrup on your breakfast pancakes, build a fire in the woodstove, walk down a dirt road to the beaver pond and watch the bitterns fish. When you have finished rusticating, enjoy the excellent cell phone reception, high speed DSL, 200 TV channels, and central heat and air conditioning.
In 10 minutes by car, you can be picnicking by a covered bridge, canoeing the Connecticut River, playing golf at the Crown Point Club, picking fruit in season at Wellwood Orchard, or hiking Mount Ascutney trails. 30 minutes from Okemo for skiing; 40 minutes from Woodstock; 40 minutes from Dartmouth College. The VAST snowmobile trail is just across the road.
A pet (cat or dog) is fine, so long as it will not chase or harrass our sheep or chickens.
This is a non-smoking home. Smoking outside on the patio only.

Listing is accurate, actually it was even better in person!! When I arrived there were muffins, milk, bread, fresh eggs, half and half, and orange juice to greet me. This is something I've not enjoyed in any other VRBO rental and speaks volumes to how special the owners are and how much they care. I was so hungry and tired after my drive the first thing I did was grab a muffin even before I put my suitcase down!! The kitchen is magnificent to say the least. It's big, bright, nicely decorated, well supplied and full of sunshine. Lets not forget the calming waterfall decorated with many interesting flowers and shrubs just outside your door. You have full view of this garden from your kitchen windows. There is a new leather sofa in the living room, truly comfy to sit, relax and watch some TV or one of the movies in the bookcase. There is a table in the living room, perfect to use your computer or play a few games. No games, there are some in the closet!! Large bedroom, comfy bed and lots of windows that do have drapes to keep out that early morning sun or leave them open and wake up to the sound of silence, maybe a few birds singing to the sunrise. My little dog Cody made friends with Tammy, the owners dog, and they would just lay there together and watch every move I made. They were so cute together. Tammy knows she doesn't belong in the guest apartment and will not enter unless you open the door and say "come". I enjoyed her company but if your not a fan of dogs, no problem, she will just go away. Grace and Randy are there if you need anything but you have total privacy and will not see or hear from them unless you need to. Grace sent me a few emails and mapped out all the interesting places to go and she even let my dog out for me on one of my shopping trips. Very nice bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and bath salts as well. Had a wonderful stay and can't wait to return. Don't hesitate to spend some time at High Shelter Farm.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We had a wonderful stay at High Shelter Farm. The Idealic setting made our holiday stay, incredibly special. The accommodations were warm and inviting from the wood-burning stove to the Jacuzzi. That kitchen was a dream to cook in. I can't say enough about the host family! We so enjoyed being able to meet them. This Christmas/New Year will be long remembered as one of our favorites!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Beautiful home, beautiful scenery, and gracious hosts were found at this top-rate vacation rental. Upon arrival Grace greated and accompanied us to the apartment. Awaiting us inside the beautifully decorated spacious apartment was a fully decorated live Christmas tree, a bowl of fresh fruit, and scrumptious apple raisin muffins. No detail was missed right down to a flashlight for our use when walking the dogs at night. There was comfort and beyond with a wonderful and fully stocked kitchen (even milk, orange juice, and bread in the fridge), a cozy living room with a full library of books and DVDs, and a five-star bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. Alll the rooms were clean, neat, and nicely furnished with high-end pieces of furniture. Our two Pembroke Welsh corgis, Mack and Maya, had a wonderful time playing with Tammy, the resident Australian shepherd, as well as being very curious about the donkeys and sheep in the pen. My only regret is that we had just the weekend to stay and with most of that time spent visiting family in New Hampshire (just a 1/2 hour away). We are definitely ready to spend a week (or more) in the summer to enjoy the pleasures at High Shelter Farm. I would highly recommend High Shelter Farm for a romantic getaway, or for a small family with older children. Thanks for a wonderful weekend getaway!Did you find this review helpful? High Shelter farm is a true gem. The location is close to the interstate but secluded and quiet. The bathroom could have been in a suite at the Four Seasons, and the apartment felt less like a rental and more like a second home. The radiant heat floors kept the place toasty even when the weather was cold and wet outside. We spent the weekend thinking "why don't we stay for a month this summer?"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My partner and I just returned from a weekend stay at High Shelter Farm. We loved the place and would highly recommend it. Grace and Randy are the most gracious hosts and we found thoughtful touches provided throughout our stay that made us feel right at home. The kitchen is well stocked (easy to prepare meals if you choose) with all the basics plus things like muffins, fresh eggs and fresh bread. While we were there we toured the local brewery, visited the near-by glass factory and found a local smokehouse. We hiked the trails on the property which are extensive and varied. We loved that it is a working farm and that we had a real sense of privacy in the very spacious apartment. The view of Mount Ascutney is amazing- what a way wake up! We are looking forward to a return trip.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We just got back from a 3 night stay at high Shelter Farm. The weather was perfect while we were here. The apartment far exceeded our expectations, it was super clean and tastefully decorated. Grace and Randy are great host and their dog Tammy is so sweet. She mad frequent visits to the apartment while we were there. The maple syrup made at the farm is delicious. The farm is at a fairly high elevation and the views of Mt. Ascutney are fantastic. One nice feature of High Shelter is that is close to I91 and Claremont,NH. Really enjoyed the hikie up Mt. Ascutney via the Weathersfield trail. At the top the views from the look out tower are great. My dog ran into a porcupine coming done the mountain so be careful if you have a dog on the trail. Looking forward to coming back for a full week next summer.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I stay at this lovely farmhouse in the lower level one bedroom apt for a long weekend. We can't have asked for a more beautiful place to stay that had an awesome view of the mountains (especially during Fall foliage). The apt. was equipped with every thing you could possibility need or want for a stay. The kitchen has everything you would need to cook a full meal if desired. The bedroom is huge and has a wonderful king size bed with beautiful high-end sheets and comforter. The bathroom is big with a big whirlpool tub and a large shower stall with his and her sinks. We brought our 2 indoor cats with us and they were welcomed and settled right in like it was home. The owners are great and very attentive to your needs. They provided us with all the necessary information about the area. We were able to gather eggs from their chickens for our breakfast in the mornings and pet the sheep. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great getaway. We truly loved our time here.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This was a wonderful, graciously appointed and very spacious home-away from home, with a spectacular private view of Mt Ascutney, the family sheep herd quietly munching just steps away. Every amenity was thoughtfully provided, with special touches that I have never seen at other vrbo's (and we stay at many) including muffins, milk, cider and fresh eggs for the first morning, what a welcome sight for weary travelers arriving late! Very child and pet-friendly, our hospitable hosts made us feel very welcomed yet also gave us full privacy. Friendly farm animals included the sheep, large friendly dog, and chickens. This was the first time we have brought along the family dog, and she seemed to enjoy the visit just as much as we did. The location was ideal, just a short drive away from historic sights, villages incl Woodstock, and the trails of Mt Ascutney. We came in the fall, so the pool was closed, but it was such a wonderful stay, we'd like to return in the summer. Of note is that the cars park up a little knoll at the top of the main house, the entry way is down a slope of lawn.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1997
About the owner: Your hosts are Randolph and Grace Knight. Grace is a 50 year old sheep farmer. Growing up outside New York City, Grace's favorite part of the year was vacation visits to her grandparents, aunts, and cousins who lived in Vermont. As soon as she could move to Vermont, she did. Randolph grew up in Florida, but has loved Vermont since his first visit in 1985. The Knights live at High Shelter year round. They enjoy farming, gardening, and travel. When they travel, they always stay at a vacation rental! They look forward to sharing their special part of Vermont with you.
Why the Owner Chose Weathersfield:
Peace, privacy, and the feel that this is the real Vermont. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodland, nature is at our doorstep. But, we are so close to major resort areas (Woodstock, Hanover, Sunapee, Manchester) with their cultural opportunities and retail stores.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The Knights live here, but completely respect visitors' privacy and need for peace. If visitors need suggestions of things to do, directions to their day's destination, or help with a maintenance issue, the hosts are right there. Because we live on-site, the apartment is always impeccably maintained and completely stocked.
