For our trip to Oahu, we stayed at 3 separate locations to take in as much of the island as possible. We loved them all, but this rental was superior in view, comfort, beach access and privacy. The location is far removed from the touristy/busy area of Honolulu/Waikiki (although really only a 45 minute or so - depending on traffic - drive from that area). The unit itself is absolutely beautiful and well stocked. The front entrance and windows to the unit offer a view of the Makaha valley, and the back entrance/balcony is a beachfront view of the lagoon and ocean, affording an amazing 360 degree view. In addition, the complete front to back of building design of these units, provides a fantastic cross breeze through the unit. There are no touristy restaurants in the immediate vicinity, however there is a fantastic mexican restaurant nearby called Taco's and more (doesn't sound or look like much, but trust me, give it a try). In the Ko'olina area which is a 15 minute or so drive, there is a typical sprawling outdoor mall type area with sushi and other restaurants. Also, Germaine's Luau is found in the Ko'olina area too. It is rated the 2nd best Luau on the island (Polynesian centre #1, however Polynesian is run by Mormons, so no alcohol on premises, whereas your ticket to Germaine's is the same price, but comes with 3 adult beverages). We had our own snorkeling gear and the snorkeling in the lagoon is pretty great (a turtle swam straight under us while snorkeling, an amazing surprise). Skip Hanauma bay, because so long as the conditions are right, you can save yourself the entry fee, parking hassle and crowds and just snorkel here. The unit had a couple boogie boards which we enjoyed also. The beach is not crowded, maybe 15-20 people at its busiest. There is no lifeguard, but if you prefer to swim on a beach that has one, Makaha beach (2 minute drive North) has a life guard on duty. We preferred our private beach. This location was perfect for relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, boogie boarding, cooking our own meals, and a short little nearby hike. It also provided a great home-base, as we really did tour the entire island several times over. For this reason, I would recommend having a car. We would absolutely stay here again. Thank you Kathy!

Wow! Just Wow!
Wow! Just Wow!
We walked into this condo at the Makaha Cabanas expecting something like a ski condo, you know, functional and well used but kind of drab. We couldn’t have been more wrong. This place was INCREDIBLE! The condo is right on the beach, with the lanai looking out on the beautiful white sand. The lanai is set up with a granite countertop and bar stools looking out over the ocean. There is nothing like sitting there eating breakfast, or watching the waves with the setting sun. Saw dolphins swim by the cove! The beach was very nice, never crowded not even on weekends, and not touristy like the Waikiki area—which is exactly what we wanted. Great for swimming, snorkeling, or just sunbathing. The owners even provided all the extras: beach chairs, umbrella, cooler, and towels—everything you need for the beach. There were tile floors through the entire condo, granite counter tops in the kitchen and bathroom. Two flat screen televisions, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. New appliances in the kitchen and everything we needed for fixing meals and cocktails. Kathy (owner) was great to work with, and quickly responded to our emails and questions. The unit was spotless when we arrived and it was an easy process to pick-up the keys. But the best part was the affordability of such luxurious accommodations. We truly feel this is the best rental value on the island! As a newly retired couple, it made for an affordable vacation experience. We will definitely stay here on our next trip to Oahu.

Happy Happy Happy
Happy Happy Happy
We are so happy with our choice of accomodations. This unit in the Makaha Beach Cabanas is amazing. The update to the unit is impeccable and very nice. Some reviews make comment on the area - really, the area doesn't look any different than the residential areas on most of the island. No worries - there is a guard on duty and the parking is gated. All staff that we met were very nice. We would recommend if you are buying groceries to take exit 1 off of H1 (Kapolei) and purchase at Walmart,Costco or Target. The grocery stores nearer condo are nice but, pricey. Only fast food joints close to condo - that didn't bother us. Laundry on sight is clean ($1.50 wash/ $1.00 dry) and gets clothes dry with one cycle! Condo is outfitted very well. Kitchen is top-notch. Well appointed thru-out. Wi-Fi is fast!! There are beach towels, chairs, umbrella, cooler and snorkeling gear in unit. The beach is so beautiful. Very quiet and clean. We had monk seals one day - that was fun. Great cross breezes in the unit - we had the sliders and top jalousie's open the entire time. To the front of the unit your view is of the Wainae Mountains. There's also a quirky rooster (or two) that crow from morning to night - can only hear at front of building - kept us smiling. If I could make one suggestion it would be for a 'welcome pack' to be in unit - listing area eateries and tv listings - radio listings - that sort of thing. Kathy Irwin (listing agent) was easy and quick to work with. If you're not wanting the Waikiki scene - and looking for more of a relaxing local beach vacation - quit looking - book this unit now!!!

Amazing is an UNDERSTATEMENT!!!
Amazing is an UNDERSTATEMENT!!!
My husband I came here for our honeymoon. It was both our first time to Hawaii. Our only regret is we couldn't stay longer. The back of this condo faces the ocean and there is always a strong ocean breeze. We were there in the hottest part of the month and the breeze made up for no air conditioner. Also door will slam shut. That is the only negative thing about this place and that's not negative HAHA. We showed up hours early for check in. The condo was still being cleaned but the girls were really sweet and let us put our luggage up there so we could go to the store and shop. food is really expensive so Id go to Costco first then the Pack 'n Save on the right side of the road. Anyways, back to the condo.....It was PERFECT absolutely PERFECT! Literally its on the beach. The beach is perfect. We never saw more then 15 adults and 10 kids at the busiest day. We saw turtles. Dolphins were seen earlier in the day. The condo is in OLD Hawaii so its not modern like Waikiki looks to be, however is so laid back and lush like you'd picture Hawaii should be. Locals are very nice You need a car! The parking lot is VERY VERY secure and the guards are really nice. There are 3 electronic locks just to get to the front door of the condo so we felt VERY safe. There is an older woman that lives 2 doors down, Cindy, she is sooo sweet we absolutely adored her. The condo has boogie boards, a cooler, chairs and umbrellas. We bought 2 snorkle sets and left them as we never had time to snorkle. Did I mention how perfect the beach right out back is? We are bringing our kids back to Hawaii next year. I wish the owner had a 2 or 3 bedroom!

My husband, myself and two kids stayed at Kathy's 8th floor unit in June. It is such a beautiful unit, incredibly clean with everything you need . The lanai had one of the prettiest views on the island. The sunsets were to die for and were something that I looked forward to everyday. We ate our dinner out there most nights and enjoyed the beautiful views of the ocean. This was our first trip to Oahu and we travelled the whole island taking day trips tot he North Shore, Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Diamond Head and the windward side of the island. All were a relatively easy drive, nothing was far but it did take a bit of time to get places. We were in another worlld staying in Makaha but we enjoyed that. The locals were incredibly nice and we got a different feel for the people and culture staying here, We LOVED that. The beach was one of the best we experienced on Oahu and even though it is a public beach it is so private and uncrowded. We saw turtles, the cutest animals ever and dolphins right off the lanai. The water is so clean and so clear like no ocean water I have ever seen. Our kids signed up for surfing lessons at the West Oahu SUP and they had a great experience learning from two nice locals who grew up nearby. The next time I come to Hawaii i would definitely stay at Kathy's place, She was so friendly and helpful. The only thing I might do differently the next time I come is that I might stay one or two nights in the North Shore or Waikiki so we wouldn't have to make the drive. But then i'd miss those sunsets, so maybe not. Thank you to Kathy for a great time, a beautiful place and an experience we will never forgot.

Wonderful experience !!
Wonderful experience !!
Just stayed at this condo for 24 nights, what a great time!!! The condo was represented exactly in the photos! The manager Kathy was great to work with and it was a very easy check in. The whole staff at Makaha Beach Cabanas were very friendly, as were the other tenants. This condo is on the Leeward side of the island, and is not touristy at all, just locals doing business as usual, small town style. The view from the Lani is superb, the clear blue water was incredible and we could see green turtles every day! We snorkled most days and the fish were so colorful swimming in the reefs and caverns, breathtaking! This is not a private beach and there are locals sharing it which really enhanced the experience, They really enjoy the water even down the the youngest children, you can tell that the ocean plays a big part in their ancestry, they are all water people! Did I mention the sunsets ? can't even explain how beautiful they are! If you are looking for a beach that is packed with tourists, all laying in rows, waiting for their cocktails, then stay in Waikiki, this is not the place for you, but for a wonderful feel good experience, Makaha is the place to stay!! In the words of IZ, " White sand, clear water, Whadda Place !!"

Beautiful, right on the beach, better than Waikiki
Beautiful, right on the beach, better than Waikiki
This beachfront condo is beautiful, with granite countertops, open-concept kitchen with eat-in counter and barstools, large flat screen TVs in both the living room and the bedroom, fast WiFi, and the bedroom and balcony face the ocean and sunset ... what more could you ask for. Every night I fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, I miss it already. Makaha is much quieter than Waikiki, with much less street noise, but it is about 45 minutes from Waikiki, depending on traffic. Once you get off the freeway and go towards Makaha, the scenery is beautiful, so it is worth the drive, and you can't find a condo like this in Waikiki. Kathy was wonderful and helpful and I would recommend her condo to everyone.

Will be here again
Will be here again
My family and I will definitely be here again next time we are in area. As mentioned in one of the other reviews, the photos posted on site do not do justice to actual condo and location. Its quite the treat to wake up every morning in this condo to the view of the most awesome beach & ocean and sound of the waves. And to get the most awesome sunset views from condo in the evening. It's like having access to your own private beach at an affordable rate. The condo itself has all the amenities that we needed (wireless internet, 2 wall mounted TVs with cable, DVD/Blu-Ray player, kitchen and utensils, beach umbrella, beach chairs, towels, beach towels, access to laundromat). All appliances are new and the kitchen and bathroom have just been upgraded. Kathy the owner was also super responsive when i was in the process of making a reservation and the check in instructions had all the details that i needed. There is also a market close by where we could buy groceries that we needed for our stay. There are really not a lot of cons to list. I would say distance from city could be a con. it takes a good 45 minutes to an hour to get to Honolulu. But this is a choice we made i.e. to be away from city. Also as listed in some of other reviews, one has to drive through the poorer parts(not so touristy) of island to get to condo. But this in my mind is completely fine and should not even be a consideration. Highly recommend this beach front condo for your next visit to Oahu! I could not have been happier with my choice.

Great (But Remote) Makaha
Great (But Remote) Makaha
This was our first time on Oahu so we chose this condo sight unseen. Getting there was a good hour from Honolulu Airport - something to keep in mind depending on what you want to do on Oahu (other than sitting on the beach and hanging out). The on-line description of the condo was complete and accurately described what we found. The unit itself has been totally and tastefully rennovated but, like many one bedroom apartments, it is long and narrow (with plenty of natural light however). The bedroom has sliding doors that open onto the lanai which has four chairs - think nice bar stools. The reason for this became apparent immediately. Concrete block construction of the balcony vs. some sort of see-through metal railing means that you have to sit up to see the beach. This does not however prevent you from getting the full impact of the relentless waves crashing 24/7 on the beach below. If you like being right there with the sounds of the ocean, you will love it. The view out to the open ocean is also lovely as were the sunsets. There are only two big buildings (condos / apartments) so the beach was very uncrowded. Although the surf and undertow are a bit rough for small children, the overall swimming and body surfing conditions were good. The water is warm and with some luck you will encounter a sea turtle or two. We did. Because the condo is located in a non-tourist area, you will get a different Hawaiian experience - one that we liked. Every morning, a small group of locals would gather to sing and chant (perhaps around 7am). On Lei Day (May 1) the ceremony lasted even longer (in a good way). After reflecting on our overall experience, we liked the unit (except for the limited visibility balcony) and found plenty of local shopping to keep the kitchen stocked. The only negative for us was that we went out exploring every day (all over the island) and found the drive back to be longer than we would have liked (our choice however). Once we got "home" however we were happy to be there. While we made it work, I would suggest this unit for folks who are more focused on the beach and hiking (some dandy trails just a few miles north). As a final thought, we found the property manager to be excellent and quick to respond to questions etc.

So you know how you always wonder if the pictures will match your experience? These really do! This place is beautiful. The condo has plenty of space for a couple or small family (we were there with our toddler) and is decked out with everything you'd need. It's all new and shiny and wonderful. And the building is literally right on the beach. We loved it. Everyone we chatted with, from the security guard to the guys hanging out in the laundry room to our resident next door neighbor, was friendly, helpful and welcoming. There's a couple of just fine grocery stores nearby and an organic market about 20 minutes away. We ate at a place called Sunset Cafe and it was right on the water with live music. Beautiful! Also enjoyed a meal up in the valley at Kahumana (?) Organic Farm Cafe. Yum. The only thing I would want to share with others is that the beach while we were there (late April) wasn't the best for little kids. There was a decent shore break that my husband and I could safely and comfortably swim out beyond, but the big crashing waves were too big for our daughter. She loved the lagoons nearby at Ko'Olina, though! And there were plenty of kids 5+ in the water. Just not little ones. Kathy was great. She helped us with our few questions (because really this place is just so easy to be at!)! This area is obviously different from Honolulu and is really quite different from even the windward side. It's drier so the landscape is different (but it's still green and there are palm trees) and folks in Honolulu think you are staying on the moon (but it's less than an hour from there and there's a Starbucks). If you are looking for a gorgeous, relaxing setting to have a quiet vacation away from the hustle and bustle, this is it. We hope to come back!
