Gig Harbor studio description
It's beautiful here at the Crow's Nest and this year's autumn colors are spectacular! WHY STAY IN A HOTEL when you can enjoy a cozy, little get-away on the water for the same price or less? WE ARE OFFERING A $200/mo DISCOUNT FOR OUR LONG-STAY (2+ mos.) GUESTS (Oct 1 - Apr 30, 2013). Welcome to the Crow's Nest at Anderson Landing on Wollochet (pronounced wuh-lah'-chet) Bay in Gig Harbor, Washington.
Accommodations: Large (677 square ft.), open second floor studio apartment, stocked kitchenette with dining area, large bathroom with a roomy shower, one queen-size bed and a trundle bed (2 twins). Sleeps 2-4
Enjoy any season at THE CROW'S NEST at Anderson Landing. On the second floor of a separate building from the main house you'll have privacy, comfort, view and access to one of the most beautiful bays on Puget Sound. Enjoy our no-bank waterfront with view seating, mooring dock, lush gardens, and fire pit right on the beach.
Relax, entertain & barbecue on your private deck where you can greet the morning sun with coffee & enjoy the evening shade with a glass of wine. In the foreground of your view you'll see the shaded, quiet and lush Middle Garden and fish pond designed by the owner, a Master Gardener. A cool retreat on a hot day! A bistro table and viewing benches also grace this area.
From Crow's Nest's queen-size bed view the water and Mt. Rainier...or the TV (with cable and a DVD player). WiFi is also available.
Linens are provided. New laundry facilities available after Aug 1, 2013.
Families and seniors will appreciate the easy access down to the beach and dock. Wander through the Middle Garden and enjoy the beauty of the changing landscape from early spring when the bulbs burst through to summer and fall's spectacular colors. The very short walk down to the beach is, for the most part, level and there are no steps.
There is a Livingston (won't tip over) rowboat, and life jackets for your use, to row your way around the peaceful waters of Wollochet Bay.
If you prefer a faster pace bring your own boat or jet ski and enjoy water skiing, inner tubing and other water sports. Whatever kind of watercraft you have, tie it up to the buoy, available for your use. There is a public boat launch just 3 doors down the street if you want to bring your boat by trailer. You are also welcome to bring your own kayak(s) or canoe(s) or whatever boats you float.
Even in the WINTER this cozy little retreat offers a quiet tranquility and beauty. Hundreds of unusual and beautiful migrating waterfowl visit these waters only at this time of the year. The sunsets can be quite spectacular and, with the occasional deep cold snap, the bay will freeze and we'll get the occasional snow. Our weather is temperate and seldom gets too hot (usually in the 70's and 80's in the the summer) or too cold (with winter averaging in the 40's).

Location & View
Described as the nearly perfect mountain, Mt. Rainier is a massive wonder to behold. The Northwest Indians referred to it as 'the mother of waters' and 'the white sentinel'. We just call it 'the mountain'. It is covered in snow and glaciers all year and climbers come from all over the world to conquer its peak. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 ft (4,392 m). Beyond the water and the evergreens, the best view of 'the mountain' is from the Crow's Nest where you will be staying....moreless
Relax and enjoy beautiful Wollochet Bay from the the Crow's Nest's deck. During the summer months watch children learning how to sail. Birdwatchers! Bring your binoculars and watch an amazing variety of migrating birds and water fowl that stop by every spring and fall. When the bay freezes over in the winter watch the antics of the seagulls as they 'ice skate' their landings. Whatever time of the year, there's always something to see and do at the Crow's Nest....moreless
Fish off the dock or swim with the locals in the bay's refreshing waters. A mooring buoy is available if you're coming by boat or yacht. We have a Livingston rowboat to get you and your party to and from the dock. The rowboat will also be available, at no extra charge, for excursions up and down our scenic bay. Local or ocean fishing charter trips available from our dock with an experienced, award-winning, licensed guide. We'll help you make a reservation....moreless

- Smithsonian Magazine named Gig Harbor one of the 'Best Small Towns in America' and there is plenty of fun to be had near the Crow's Nest, should you wish to go exploring. Downtown Gig Harbor is just 5 minutes away with its boat & kayak rentals, Harbor History Museum, parks & outdoor summer concerts & movies, & delightful specialty shops. Uptown Gig Harbor features restaurants, big box stores, specialty shops and, for movie buffs, our new 'Galaxy Uptown' multiplex theater. No need to go out of town to eat! Feast at any of our excellent restaurants (we'll give you a list of our favorites including the restaurant that Sunset magazine named #1 best fish and chips in the West) and enjoy one of our state's many award winning wines or pour a pint of Gig Harbor's own Seven Seas brew. The heart of Tacoma is over the Narrows Bridge, about 20 minutes away. The Tacoma Art Museum, Chihuly's Glass Museum & the new LeMay Car Museum are nearby as well. Explore the quaint Norwegian town of Poulsbo, dig clams at Joemma State Park or take the ferry from nearby Bremerton to Pike Place Market in Downtown Seattle (our favorite out-of-town outing). Bottom Line: we are centrally located to explore historic Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Seattle, Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, the San Juan Islands and Victoria, British Columbia. Whatever you choose to do, whether it's nothing or all of it, you'll be sure to have an incredible time at the Crow's Nest! Maps, directions and sightseeing brochures available. ...moreless

My family needed a quiet weekend away for home, and we found the Crow's Nest just when we were about to give up. The Crow's Nest is all that the other reviewers have found it to be. The owner was very helpful when we making the booking, gave us a warm welcome and a garden tour when we arrived. It's hard to believe the studio is less than 700 square feet, as it felt plenty big enough for our family of 4! It was bright, airy, clean, well-maintained, and you get a view of Mt. Rainier and the sunrise as the pictures on the website show. It was very relaxing to just sit on the balcony, in the garden (where hummingbirds visited), on the downstairs porch, the fire pit, etc. Besides the furnished kitchen and fresh eggs from their chickens, there were flowers and herbs from the garden - and if it wasn't in the Nest, we just asked, and the owner found it for us. Our only regret is that we could only stay for a couple of nights - we hope to return and stay longer! I would greatly recommend this place to friends and relatives. Because of the garden and the view, any time of the year is a great time to visit. It's definitely a great launching point for any water activity, a visit to Mt. Rainier, Tacoma, the Key Peninsula, and other South Sound locations.

Great view of Mount Rainer, charming garden
Great view of Mount Rainer, charming garden
My husband and I and our adult daughter were in town for a family wedding on Fox Island. The location was very convenient, only minutes to Fox Island but still close to Gig Harbor. We had so much room for a studio with 3 people. My daughter enjoyed the trundle bed which has been added and not in the photos. It truly looks like the photos. Candace provides everything a guest would want from water bottles on arrival to maps, toiletries, reading materials, full stocked kitchen including cook books. If we needed anything, she was across magical garden for assistance. My only regret is that we spent most of our visit with family so we didn't get to kayak and explore the harbor or use the grill that other guests enjoyed. We did have a glass of wine on the second story deck with the great view of Mount Rainer and the Puget Sound and coffee in the morning, just like the photo. I really hope we get the chance to stay again while visiting family on Fox Island. or a mini vacation for my husband and myself.

Our new favorite place
Our new favorite place
My husband and I are in our early thirties. We live in Las Vegas and wanted to escape the heat for a week and discovered the Crow’s Nest after perusing their post. We stayed for seven days the week of Fourth of July. Candace welcomed us very graciously and walked us through the “ins and outs” of the rental, then walked us through her lovely property. Lush green and colorful flowers surround you in her garden. Walking towards the water you see juicy raspberries growing on the vine offset by vigorous Basil, Sage, and other herbs along your path. As if that isn’t enough already you finally approach the bay that the property sits on with a great seating area and fire pit to relax and take it all in. I can’t neglect to mention Candace’s garden behind the parking area, as well, which includes a chicken coop with fresh eggs for you whenever you want them! Our hosts, Candace and Bruce were the ultimate hosts. They make you feel at home from the first moment you arrive. They were very attentive and seemed genuinely interested in ensuring we enjoyed our stay. For example, there were some unseasonably high temperatures during our visit. We let Candace and Bruce know we had a problem with the heat and only a few hours later Bruce installed an A/C unit. As you can see from the pictures, the Crow’s Nest is a studio apartment situated over the garage. The photos and the description were accurate and the apartment was clean and clearly well kept. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans and utensils. The deck was much larger than it appeared in the pictures, with a perfect view of the water and Mt. Rainier every day. Another thing to note, I work from home and am reliant on my internet connection to complete my work. I worked the week we were up there and never experienced an issue with connectivity on my computer or our Roku. The location is also great. It is a great launching point for plenty of distractions close by. Although you are a little removed from the retail of Uptown Gig Harbor and “Old Gig Harbor”, it is a quick and easy drive (10 mins) to get there. Here is a rundown of some spots we enjoyed: Tides Tavern, Seven Seas brewery tap room, Kelly’s Restaurant, Gateway to India, Forza Coffee, Tuesdays at Galaxy Theater, Point Defiance Park and Zoo, Canterwood Golf Course, The Rainiers, the Mariner’s minor league team. Our stay at the Crow’s Nest fulfilled everything we were looking for on our “vacation checklist” and surpassed it in so many ways.

Perfect for a peaceful extended stay!
Perfect for a peaceful extended stay!
I stayed at the Crows Nest for a few weeks. It was perfect for an extended stay. I was looking for a peaceful place with a kitchen and a view-success. The first few nights I was there, the full moon gave a breathtaking view of the harbor. On clear days Mt. Rainier was visible in all its glory. I enjoyed watching the boats on the water. I just wish I could have spent more time relaxing at the apartment during my stay! The kitchen was stocked with everything you need to prepare meals. Nice spacious shower. Comfortable bed.. Washer and dryer available too which was another great feature. The property has beautiful gardens. There is also an area to sit next to the harbor and a rowboat too! Kind and considerate host and hostess that went above and beyond for me. Next time I'm in Gig Harbor or Tacoma I would love to stay there again!

Felt like home to me!
Felt like home to me!
There are so many things I loved while I stayed at this property. My bed was comfortable! I have been so many places where the bed is as hard as a rock, but not at this place. The room was clean and had everything I needed and more. The view of Mt. Rainier was beautiful off the deck by day and the stars which were too many to count by night. I would recommend this property and better yet, I am planning on returning again.

Great place to stay in the Gig Harbor area!
Great place to stay in the Gig Harbor area!
My husband and I used this studio apartment as a base for exploring the area. It is a lovely location on the water and the view of Mt Rainier off the deck was a real bonus. Our hosts were gracious and helpful, answering questions and giving recommendations. The apartment is light and airy, very comfortable and well appointed and the gardens were spectacular. We used the dingy at the dock to explore the local waterfront. We bought freshly harvested oysters and clams to cook in the apartment and found the local grocery stores and produce stand to provide plenty of dining in options. Mt Rainier is nearby and we hiked almost up to the snow on excellent trails enjoying the great views and vast wildflower meadows. Port Townsend is a nice day trip and Ft. Defiance has many outdoor options and is just across the bridge. Gig Harbor is nice little town to explore, as well, with lovely harbor views. There are plenty of day trips one can take, including Seattle and Tacoma if one is looking for city options. We would definitely stay here again.

I admit I was a bit skeptical...
I admit I was a bit skeptical...
of a one-room studio apartment, but huge kudos to Candace and Bruce for putting together such a cozy, quaint, comfy, yet spacious, home-away-from-home. It was more than we expected and has everything you could need. But if something is missing, just ask and there it is! Candace saw that Del was having a hard time getting up the 3 steps up to the lower deck and asked if a handrail would make it easier...Bruce built one that night! They were always available to answer questions or help. The bed is so comfortable that it was hard to get out of it in the mornings. And the view!! From the balcony, looking out over the bay, you can see beautiful Mt. Rainier, and it was fun watching the activity on the water, from water skiing to jet skiing to sailing lessons from the nearby yacht club. And looking down at the lush garden area that Master Gardener Candace works on so diligently is an additional view to enjoy. We began telling all our friends and family about this hidden gem the second day of our stay. We took a side trip to the San Juan Islands, visited lots of great restaurants and sites in the area and even entertained friends on the deck several times (thanks for the extra wine glasses, Candace!) Our month ended too soon, but the memory will last forever! Thanks for being such great hosts, Bruce and Candace!!

About the owner: Bruce Anderson is in sales at Lexus of Tacoma. He loves people in general, but most of all his family and his dear little grandson, Ash. His hometown is Burnaby, BC, Canada, but became a citizen of the US about 30 years ago. His wife of over 40 years, Candace, grew up in the Seattle area. They met in a band that sang its way around the world. Candace has too many interests to list, but the most prominant are her garden and being a Brand Partner with Nerium International (specializing in anti-aging).
Why the Owner Chose Gig Harbor:
There's something about being by and breathing in salt air from seawater that is both peaceful and healing. This property has been completely reworked and rebuilt from the house to the gardens into an eyecatching, comfortable retreat for both the owners and their guests.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
Living on a body of saltwater with its tides and sea life is very different from living on a lake. Though, like a lake our bay seems intimate and protected, it can be more closely compared to like living on a cul-de-sac...only this is a cul-de-sac of water...salt water. Beyond Wollochet Bay is Puget Sound. Beyond Puget Sound is the Ocean. And that's the wonder of it: our little bay eventually leads to the ends of the earth.
