This lovely ocean front property is the perfect home-away-from-home for your family. Nestled on a premium stretch of beach, right on the water, this three story house offers incredible views of the ocean from the upper bedrooms, the living and dining room areas, as well as from the spacious covered and gated deck, touching the dune. This well-loved home has weathered many storms and still stands strong! It is a cozy, comfortable 1970's home, recently refreshed, which has already built a group of returning fans, and is ready to be shared with others.
There is a huge driveway, leading into a two car garage (available for your use). Up one flight, on the main floor the dining room area (seating six) and comfortable living room areas have a wall of windows overlooking the dune and the short walkway to the beach. The kitchen, with five stools around the counter top, was renovated five years ago and is equipped with everything you need to enjoy home cooked meals. There is a TV, plus VCR and a DVD player, and a stereo in the living room...but you will NOT find flat screen tvs in every room in this house! The shelves of cherished books are offered freely...if you like one, take it! We do accept donations for Team First Book a local non-profit that provides new books to kids who may not have any. In the closet you will find a huge bin of puzzles, games, cards and art supplies. This is a home which inspires quiet time, fun and connectedness....a wonderful thing for families!
In back of the living room is a den/office area with a pull out couch / bed. (Queen). An accordion wall can separate this room from the living room, offering privacy. A small bathroom with shower is adjacent.
The stairs lead up to two large, front to back, bedrooms (500 sq feet each) with windows on three sides. Designed before central AC, the unique angled window design offers incredible views of the ocean right from your bed! (We DO have central AC & heat now.) The master bedroom has a comfortable Queen bed, along with a pull out futon couch that sleeps two (Full). The other bedroom has two twin beds, along with a Pack n’Play in the closet, should you have a baby or toddler. Each bedroom has its own full bath, with shower and bathtub.
Next to the kitchen you'll find the laundry room, with washer and dryer…a back door leads to street-side deck with an outdoor hot/cold shower…perfect after a long day on the beach! Also a good alternative to the beachside deck in case you want a different temperature or breeze. Beautiful sunsets are provided by the local weather patterns.
One of the most special things about this house is the deck. This 250 square foot covered deck has lounge chairs, cushioned chairs and little tables where you can sit comfortably, shaded from the sun after about 10am, to enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean, and beach life. Just today we watched dolphins jumping right in front of our house!
Topsail Beach offers everything one could hope for: bath temp waters (at least in July and August!) perfect for swimming, surfing and boogie boarding. People fish from the beach or walk to the pier, which is only a pleasant 0.7 mile stroll.

Year Purchased: 1973
About the owner: When Carol's Mom, Pat, built this house with an eye toward her retirement, she wanted to get back to NC after more than 20 years in Vermont where she 'never quite thawed out' during summer high temps of mid-70s in those days. Having rented for several 2-week summer vacations in Topsail Beach, she decided to see if she could afford a lot for a future house. This lot was one in a row of 5. You could watch boats on the Intracoastal from the back porch and shrimpers on the ocean from the front. Housing growth has obscured the waterway view since then, but the sunsets are still magnificent.
Why the Owner Chose Surf City: Pat, Carol & Jim designed the house for cross-ventilation in the days before central air was common, building up rather than back on the narrow lot so that no rooms would be cut off from the natural flow of air. This was one of the first 3-story houses on this stretch of beach, so the big upstairs bedrooms have windows on 3 sides. The beach-facing bedroom windows were also angled to catch breezes that often blow along the beach rather than straight in. We keep most windows closed now because two AC/heat pumps slow down salt-air corrosion, control humidity and keep the house comfortably cool in summer and warm in winter. But you still get the great views and the sound of the surf!
Since then Pat has welcomed many family reunions. You can become very popular with nieces and nephews when you have a beach house ;-) She began living here year-round in about 1992 and was able to stay next to her beautiful beach until the last year of her life. Now that she has passed, Jim & Carol would like to keep the house in the family, but it must be self-supporting. This is our only property for rent so you'll be dealing directly with us (We're 45 min down the road in Wilmington.) and a few trusted on-island folk to make your stay as carefree as possible. You will be our only customer at the time you are staying.
The Unique Benefits at this House: Visitors love our covered porch which has shade from about 10am on. Gates and vertically designed railings make the porches safe for kids or dogs and discourage climbing. After Pat's death, realtor friend said we should clear out all the clutter, bookcases, etc. In most ways we did declutter, but we couldn't imagine staying at the beach and not reading, so we kept about half the books for your entertainment/ enlightenment. And if you get into a book you just can't leave behind,we are happy to accept donations for Team First Book, a non-profit Carol's involved with that provides new books to kids in need. It may be the first book they've ever owned!
There is an open shower on the walkway to the beach and an enclosed shower on the street-side porch with hot & cold water so you can pull off your suit and rinse out all the sand before going in.
The concrete pad in the driveway provides good space for RVs and includes power, water and sewer connections.
Pat was a librarian in her day and we're all great readers, so we hope you'll enjoy her shelves full of beach reads and scattered non-fiction in several fields. If you find one you can't leave behind, we'll accept your 'honor system' donation for First Book-New Hanover County. There's TV with cable and Wi-fi for your electronic devices, but who needs it when you can read and hear the surf rolling in?
