Point Reyes Station house description
Barracca On The Bay is a custom designed coastal vacation home on the East shore of the incredible Tomales Bay. Panoramic western views of Tomales Bay and the Point Reyes National Seashore, fill the homes interior with an ever changing theater of waterfront vistas each season. Egrets, Herons, Pelicans, and seals are frequent visitors to the shoreline against a backdrop of the sparkling blue waters of the bay, and the untouched rolling hills of the Point Reyes beyond.
The lodge style home has aged cedar timbers vaulting all ceilings; decks, panoramic windows capture western seashore, bay views, and magical sunsets. Barracca is a great private get away spot for a family, intimate reunions of friends, or couples seeking a very private romantic country retreat.
Several regular guests return frequently for 'inspirational solitude' & retreats as they compose new music, write, or capture the gorgeous environment for their art or photographic endeavors. Couples return for aniversaries and families return for new explorations of the many activities in the area and to create more cherished memories.
(Five star Rating in Northern California Romantic Getaways & featured in Sunset magazine)
After a day of coastal exploring, hiking, kayaking Tomales Bay, biking or just relaxing, return to a cozy fire at the shell & rock hearth, watch the sunset from the expansive decks, delight in creating a wonderful meal in the gourmet kitchen , barbecue fresh local seafood, meats or world famous fresh Hog Island Oysters brought in from just down the bay.
*Close the day with a soak in the spa under the cloak of the Milky Way. The views, ambience, and solitude, makes Barracca a fantastic vacation spot.

Parking at site if there is only 2 cars. Boats must be 14' or less given the turning radius for small trailers. Launch is near Nicks cove at Miller Park Launch. Please only build fires when temperatures are chill. Please bring your own kindling measuring 16'' or smaller. The air quality at Tomales is awesome and we hope you will help us keep it that way. Perfect for a big family
Perfect for a big family
Barraca was perfect for our family of 6 adults and 3 school-aged children. The setting is just terrific with beautiful views of Tomales Bay, as well as plenty of encounters with sea birds, seals, and deer. It was a good base from which to explore Point Reyes and all county along the bay on both sides. We spenty plenty of time just relaxing at the house, as well. It was comfortable and we had plenty of room to spread out, but we could also all get together in the kitchen and dining area or living room. The kids loved it, discovering toys in the living room and plenty of hiding places on the property. The whole place felt far from the city, but it only took an hour and fifteen minutes to get there from our home in San Francisco. We'd happily visit again. Thanks!

Owner response: Thank you so much for your wonderful review...we knew who ever was lucky enough to be there that weekend would see Tomales Bay Fall at its best even if there was some occasional fog. We love to hear of families creating new memories at Barracca, especially those who live in a more urban environment. There is so much ecology and environmental learning in the area......and not to mention the benefits of being away-from -it all to get a nature fix. There is so much to explore in the park, the beaches, by kayak or bike. Hope you will be back during all the seasons...as they are each uniquely beautiful....yet always peaceful! Best, Barbara
Outstanding Home Away from Home (or even better)
Outstanding Home Away from Home (or even better)
First and foremost. This home is not your typical rental. It is completely modern home with more then expected amenities. When we arrived we were welcomed by the view (the pictures don't do it justice). You are right there on the water. We opened the door and were greeted by a full guide of things to do in the area and how to access things in the home. They provided fresh towels, water in the bathrooms, and firewood. The kitchen is completely updated and has all the utensils and tools required. You only need to bring the local produce and food to eat. The wrap around deck and all the windows provide the perfect viewing platform for watching all the birds and sea life out in the bay. The hot tub is the perfect end to a day hiking or kayaking. Very relaxing and perfect for star gazing. If you want a quick and perfect taste of Tomales Bay, you can go five minutes up the road to Nick's Cove. North about 15 minutes away is the town of Tomales and Tomales Bakery (which is the perfect place to get a cup of joe, sweet pastries and wonderful bread. South is Point Reyes and its wonderful stores and markets. On the way stop off for fresh oysters at Hogs Bay (reservations definitely required) or Marshall Store (we ate there and had the best crab cakes and oysters outside). Overall a fantastic property and a bargain for everything you get at the house and around the house. Working with Sandy to get the reservation and information was seamless and easy to do. They promptly returned the deposit. My only recommendation is to provide a pricing option for couples that want to use the master suite with its own ensuite without having to pay an extra fee. My wife and I didnt need to use any of the two bedrooms in the main house but had to pay for them. They restrict access to the bunk room in the main house; they should provide a similar set-up for those couples only wanting to use the master suite.

Owner response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write a thorough review. You found our favorite spots there as well. There are still many more in terms of things to do, food events, and wildlife to see on all the different hiking trails. We have many couples, family's, or even book clubs who are regulars and hope you consider returning. We will continue to try to test the pricing structure for varying amounts of people, however in the past it made matters more confusing, and most of our guests either fill the house, or chose the option of just the two BR in the main house. Thanks for your feedback , and so glad your stay was full of great memories!
A Slice of Heaven on Tomales Bay
A Slice of Heaven on Tomales Bay
We spent the entire month of July at Barracca and it was absolutely wonderful. The location on the edge of Tomales Bay looking across towards Hog Island and Point Reyes is spectacular with a view that changes constantly with the sun, wind fog and clouds. On a typical day we would make the beautiful 30 minute drive to Point Reyes, run on one of the many different trails and then stop in Pt Reye’s station to pick up fresh fish, homemade baked goods and local vegetables to enjoy back at the house for dinner. Other excursions included kayaking on the bay, exploring the Sonoma Coast and wine tasting in nearby Sebastopol. We’ve stayed in many vacation homes and have found few that were truly comfortable for more than a week or two. Barracca however, is so roomy, bright and well designed it was great for a whole month. Everything from the spacious kitchen, to the huge picture windows and the comfy beds made it easy to relax and feel at home. The house has beautifully rustic look but somehow manages a luxurious feel. If you want a place where you can really unwind and get into the rhythm of life in a magical part of the world, you would be hard-pressed to beat Barracca

Owner response: We are so appreciative of your review! We love hearing about guest's unique perspectives. Those who really get the most from their stay are those who are able to stay a week or more and by doing so really immerse themselves into the community, the unique environmental aspects of Tomales Bay, PR National seashore, and beyond. Best of all your family was able to get into the more relaxing rhythm of living at Barracca with the ever changing views and be what others have come to call "soul replenished by a needed nature break" We welcome your return if you are coming back to the SF Bay area.

This IS IT. !!!!
We have rented numerous homes in Inverness, Marshall, Dillon Beach and even Bodega. This home is by far our favorite. It's a very private location with huge waters view that offer spectacular sunsets and enchanting mornings as the mist rises off the Waters of Tomales Bay. It is a short drive to Hog Island Oysters where we can purchase our dozens of Sweet water oysters to BBQ and enjoy at Barracca, or we can walk or take another short jaunt to Nicks Cove for a fabulous dinner or brunch. this home is equipt with everything you could possible desire in terms of kitchen supplies, a great outdoor spa, games, books, classic records, gret beds, and an endless array of beaches to explore, hikes to take in the seashore, and some of the best foodie experiences in the Bay area, let alone the USA. This was our second time here and we are already booking another stay. This home is beautiful inside and out, great attention to detail and design. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Quintessential Point Reyes/Tomales Bay...
Quintessential Point Reyes/Tomales Bay...
If you are a lover of the Point Reyes/Tomales Bay area or considering visiting for the first time, you could not ask for a more perfect home and location from which to experience this place. This home evokes the history and the charm of "old Point Reyes," but has been completely remodeled in a loving way. Beautiful and well-appointed but oh so comfortable and not the least bit fussy. We have had the most incredible times, totally at peace...wonderful barbecues of local meat and oysters, cracked fresh-caught crab in the light of a beautiful sunset, walked along the shores, seen a new species of creature with every visit (birds, fish, crab, seals, bat rays, jellyfish, starfish, and even one night, a whale that had run off course). The natural setting is incredible and changes by the hour. And 2 minutes away you can have a fabulous brunch at Nick's Cove. We launch our own small fishing boat right off the beach in front of the house when the weather is good. When the fog rolls in you look forward to cozying up by the woodstove. Point Reyes and this home possess a special quality for us. Less than an hour from San Francisco, and yet, completely transporting. My family is already planning our fourth visit in 2013. We have rented homes off VRBO in this area for 7 years. This rental is unbeatable. Romantic, fantastic for families and young children.

Owner response: We so appreciate you taking the the time to share your thoughts about our Pt Reyes, Tomales Bay home Barracca. It is very special to know other couples, families and their friends appreciate the "magic" of this precious section of the California coast and the home we have created. We wish you many cherished memories in the making at Barracca! Warmly, Barbara S.
We loved this rental. It exceeded our expectations. Pictures on the website were very nice but once we arrived we found the house to be really even more charming . The flowers around the house were in bloom, the house was at the end of a very quiet little road and the view from the front was absolutely gorgeous overlooking the bay and Hog Island. In the evening at sunset there were beautiful deer on the backside of the house and up the steep incline just steps from the back door. The evenings were cool and we had a roaring fire every night. The accommodations in the house were very nice. Great kitchen with everything for cooking which we did most nights. Very good restaurants in Pt. Reyes Station and same goes for marketing. Excellent quality wines to be had, beautiful produce and cheeses, Hog Island Oyster Co. just minutes down the road. A real food lovers paradise. For recreation we took a different hike every day on the Point Reyes National Seashore area. The variety of scenery is extraordinary.. From beaches and oyster beds to lighthouses and howling wind and fog to old growth pine forests to gorgeous fields with wild Elk all around. We were just amazed at how much there is to do in the area. Barracca was a really comfortable house . Even thought there was just one bathroom in the main house we managed to share just fine. I would definitely recommend this to friends. It's probably not good for lots of people because of the one bathroom unless you take the guest house for an additional fee. Big thumbs up for this one!

A Perfect Getaway
A Perfect Getaway
Both the location and the home were exquisite! What a memorable weekend. The kids played happily on the lawn and rocks, while the grownups drank incredible wine and prepared delicious meals with Hog Island oysters and other local faire. The home was beautifully appointed and just understated enough to make it truly relaxing. None of use wanted to leave -- it was the perfect getaway!

"We loafed & watched the ever changing view on Tomales Bay ! Saw sea otters herons, hawks, osprey , deer, and humming birds. This is our first time staying on this side of the Bay. Its delightful, warm afternoon sun on the deck & gorgeous sunsets. The magic of Pt Reyes infused our days and cozy nights. One by firelight at the hearth another by candlelight in the amazing dining room. A very memorable 25th anniversary . Amazing private view from the hot tub under the stars.. So sad to leave this amazing house and paradise. We plan to return again soon!

Year Purchased: 1983
About the owner: Steve and Barbara purchased historical Barracca after scouring the California Coast for a unique waterfront property that provided;water and landscape vistas, easy boat/kayak access, beautiful sunsets, and as 'Old California Coastal' character as they could find ! Barracca and it's site have over a 100 year history too incredible to convey here! Safe to say we found its site, location, views and non touristy rural surroundings too captivating to leave. Steve, a residential Architect of estate custom homes in the SF Bay area designed and completely rebuilt the lodge style home in 2008. Retaining it's coastal lodge character and including a few of the antiques from the original home in the early 1900's while also upgrading all features: providing casual elegance and retreat amenities. It has been a treasure to their family for multi-generation reunions, and also a refreshing change from the pace of life in South Bay Area.
Why the Owner Chose Point Reyes Station:
Point Reyes , Tomales Bay, and and the section of coast that Barracca is located on is one of the most untouched natural coastal areas within 1 hour of San Francisco. Unlike much of California it has changed very little in 50+ years ! We were charmed by the surrounding pasture lands of the Marin Hills & astounded at the ever-changing horizon over Tomales Bay each hour of the day, and each season of the year. There was no larger waterfront parcel on the entire shoreline of Tomales bay with easy boating/kayaking access, nearby hiking, biking or such seclusion. Of course the miracle to us continues to be this gem could even be found with in an easy 1 hour drive from San Francisco and so few people seemed to know about it! Hiking out to Tomales Point past herds of Tule elk, biking rural roads, kayaking at sunset, sailing, fishing,or just lounging on the deck provide restoration of the soul for our hectic family life in the Bay area. We are 'Foodies' at heart and you just can't beat the wonderful locally grown foods served at the numerous great restaurants nearby or sold at the markets in Pt Reyes Station. One of our favorite things to do after a full day in the park or on Tomales Bay is to head over to Hog Island Oyster company ( few minutes drive) to buy a few dozen oysters, go to the local market for their great organic produce, local wines, fresh seafood and gourmet cheeses.....then head home to Barracca for a sunset BBQ......making S'amores.....then a soak in the spa under the stars ! For longer stays; day trips to Napa Valley, Russian River, San Francisco, or Bodega Bay are all possible........After owning Barracca site for over 25 years we are still discovering new hikes, and new adventures in the surrounding area. (And great dining too!)
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our guests say our photos don't due the house justice. We'll work on that :~) Barracca is graced with one of the largest shore footage lots on the E. Shore of Tomales Bay while also being distanced enough from HWY 1 to ensure quiet, privacy & beautiful sunsets. Steve redesigned the new Barracca to be a be a lodge style retreat.....and it is ! The worries of the world seem to melt away with the changing tides and sky. There is a small beach a short walk from our door. Kayak rentals and boat launches just down the road. Gourmet dining and quaint turn of the century western towns a short drive away. Our guests and family often choose to never leave Barracca for their entire stay just to relax and enjoy viewing the Bay, wildlife, sea life and birds. The location of Barracca lends itself to short dirves to the north to Dillon Beach, Bodega Bay or the other charming rural towns and beaches of Sonoma. Day trips to Sonoma ,Healdsberg, Napa, and the wine country are entirely feasible as well. To the South is the quaint western town of Point Reyes Station, Bolinas & Inverness. Across the Tomales Bay by kayak or car are thousands of acres and miles of diverse hiking trails, horseback riding, a light house to expolore, and naturalist guided hikes from the Point Reyes Visitor Center at Bear Valley. At Barracca the Great Room has a pretty full DVD/ Video /music selection as well as shelves of books, local hiking and wildlife guides, a game & toy cabinet. There is also a connection dock for your MP3 or IPod at the stereo. The deck has full western views for incredible sunsets, a picnic table for dining outside, and a new Jacuzzi that can accomodate 4-6,perfect for star gazing from at night!
