Very roomy one bedroom fully equipped apartment. Has queen bed, queen-sized foldout couch, and two very comfortable cots (can sleep six); dining area with table and chairs; living room with queen foldout couch (very comfortable!) and overstuffed chair, etc.; counter between dining area and kitchen with bar stools; fully equipped kitchen with microwave oven, range w/ oven, refrigerator, coffee-maker, toaster, full set of dishware and cooking utensils; full private bathroom w/ shower; laundry closet w/ state-of-the-art very large washer and dryer.
This apartment is a second-story dwelling which affords spectacular views of the Chugach mountains, and of the South Fork River which empties into the Matanuska River. It has a covered porch with table and chairs on the north side, and a large open deck on the northeast side, with table, chairs, and swing seat, and it provides a view of Sheep Mountain to the north. Knotty pine is generously applied throughout for the wainscot and ceilings, giving the apartment a soft, amber glow.
Nearby, there are numerous activities to engage in through the local businesses. White-water rafting down the Matanuska River is just five minutes away. Glacier trekking and/or climbing is ten minutes away. Zip-lining is available, just ten minutes away. Flight-seeing is one mile up the highway, where you can fly miles up the Matanuska Glacier, and/or go miles in behind Sheep Mountain spotting caribou, Dall sheep, and an occasional bear. You can take hiking trails all along the foot of Sheep Mountain, or strike off on your own and climb the mountain to the top. The trails are available across the highway at Sheep Mountain Lodge, just a five minute walk away. An official birdwatching site is five miles up the highway. People come from all over in latter April and September to witness the migration of the eagles, hawks, geese, ducks, and swan, as this pass where we are located, the Tanita Pass, is one of the three major migration routes in Alaska. And, from where you will be staying, one can spot Dall sheep on Sheep Mountain, which is a sheep preserve, in the spring and fall.
In the winter months, there is cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Sheep Mountain Lodge, across the highway, and Majestic Valley Resort, one mile up the highway, have many, many kilometers of groomed x-country ski trails, with varying degrees of difficulty (I never was able to get through the Suicide Hill trail.). If you like, you can blaze your own trails across our beautiful landscape on snowshoes. Snowmobile rs can go up your private drive, cross the highway, and get on a designated trail which takes you up the highway to the best snowmobiling area in the world. Hundreds of miles of nothing but snow covered vistas, giving you a unique opportunity to see four mountain ranges in one day: Wrangell; Alaska; Talkeetna; and Chugach. There are established trails, but most people prefer to strike off on virgin snow across the endless tundra and absolute wilderness. It's very common to spot numerous caribou along the way.
It's all located on the east end of the property, affording complete privacy and quiet. It has its own private parking area right off the deck area, and has its own private driveway.

Year Purchased: 1977
About the owner: Tom grew up in a military family, one of six children. Consequently, he lived all over the globe. He joined the Air Force in 1966, and again travelled many places, including a tour in Vietnam. On the way to and from Vietnam, he had layovers in Anchorage. He loved the cool, fresh smell of the Alaskan air, and the mountains all around. From that point on he was determined to return. He graduated from Texas State University in 1974, packed up and headed north to Alaska, finally. He arrived the summer of 1975, worked many kinds of jobs, and met his wife, Katherine 'Dove' Sabin, on one of those jobs. They were married on Sheep Mountain and living there shortly afterward. Two children came along in '83 and '85, a girl and boy. Tom got a teaching position at the local K-12 school, Glacier View School, where both children attended. He retired in 2004, which freed up his time to build the new apartments. Dove also arrived in the summer of 1975 coming up from Maryland where she grew up. She too caught the Alaska fever and struck off for Alaska. Her first job was gutting fish and cooking at a small salmon processing camp at Manly Hot Springs, which is north of Fairbanks. After the end of summer, she moved to Anchorage, where she and Tom met. Dove took care of the children every, single day, while bringing in extra income on the side. She waitressed, sewed, did weather observing, cooked, baked, and made wedding cakes. She's what we call 'a real Alaskan woman', meaning that she believes she can do anything she puts her mind to. After she raised two wonderful children, and they left home, she went back to school to earn her certification as a computer technician, and worked for the school district as such. She retired in 2012, which has freed her up to work on the vegetable garden, and to run the apartment business. Tom and Dove can not even fathom living anywhere else on earth, as they truly feel they live in a paradise.
Why the Owner Chose Sheep Mountain:
After driving up the Alcan that summer of 1975, Tom was heading into Anchorage and the great, exciting unknown, when, along the way, he passed through about a ten mile stretch of road called Sheep Mountain, a narrow valley between two beautiful mountain ranges, the Talkeetna, of which Sheep Mountain is a part of, and the Chugach. He had never seen a more wondrous place -- it took his breath away. He had immaginings of just such a perfect place for years, and here it was! He told himself right then and there that he was coming back here some day to live. Little did he realize at the time that he'd be here within the year. Dove had a similar experience. She came up with nothing but a backpack and a dream. She came up on a ferry through the Inside Passage. On the bus from Haines to Anchorage, she too passed through the Sheep Mountain area, and she, too, was in awe, and she, too, told herself she would live here some day. Low and behold, she was back up here within the year, with Tom. The first place they lived was in a log cabin. They were to cabin-sit for a year, which turned into two. During that time, they fell in love with Sheep Mountain and its inhabitants -- folks and fauna. The day came that they were to leave the cabin, and they were trying to decide where to go. It dawned on them that, 'Hey, we don't have to ever leave this place if we don't want to. We've got to find some land to build on!' So, they ended up buying a few acres just two miles down the road, right across from Sheep Mountain Lodge. It had pure, artesian water, the land was good to build on, and the views were beautiful. They found out later that, for right in this little one mile stretch, it is in a kind if bubble of protection from the north wind blasts, and the mosquito problem is almost nonexistent. As Dove is fond of saying,'We have the best water on the planet
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
We have built, by hand, every part of every building on our place. The main building is a partially underground house built in 1981. Ten years later we built an addition, which doubled our footage. Then, in 2006, work began on the garage/apartment addition, which is the apartment being rented out. It was completed four years later in 2010. The apartment, the Chugach View, is a second story unit, which gives it the great benefit of beautiful views in every direction. A covered porch off the south side affords viewing and relaxation come rain or shine. You are surrounded and nestled in knotty pine, celing and walls -- a very warm feeling. It is within minutes of many outdoor activities, both summer and winter. The apartment has pure, artesian water -- 'The best water on the planet!' We had a biologist visit years ago, and told us we have an unusually high number of varieties of wildflowers -- 24 that he found. He said we are right in the middle of a transitional zone between alpine and tree line. We are just below tree line, as the elevation here is 2820 feet above sea level. Sheep Mountain, to the north, goes up another 3000+ feet (about 6000 feet above sea level). The Chugach Mountains, to the south, across the Matanuska River, are somewhat higher -- up to 4500 (about 7500 feet above sea level).
