We'd do it again
We'd do it again
Just returned from wonderful stay at this property. The home was immaculately clean, and was lovingly restored. Hard wood floors, 12' ceilings, transoms over the doors, spacious rooms, and furnished almost exclusively with antiques from the time period in which the house was built, all made for a vacation fit for a king. The wifi worked with no issues, we enjoyed the books and games, the kitchen was well stocked with all the necessary tools/pots/pans. The coffeepot worked well (we are caffeine fiends), but required a flat-bottomed filter (we brought cone filters from home). Couches, chairs, beds were all comfy. Bathrooms on both levels of the property was a helpful feature. We made use of washing machine, dryer and clothesline--three really important features for vacations, especially beach vacations. My three year old had no problem walking the 2 block route to the beach. We had a blast digging in the sand and playing in the warm water of the bay. (we even made use of the sun umbrella which was in the storage shed.) The beach was never crowded, so we had our run of the place. The town is a sleepy little place (and I say this with the utmost respect), a terribly relaxed environment, with friendly natives who all said "hello" as we passed. Our only issues with the town are as follows: reduced "Open" hours at the local establishments--many places closed early on Sundays and were not open on mondays (which meant we couldn't partake of the town's home made ice cream shop), and a lack of vegetarian faire at the restaurants. As seasoned vegetarian travelers to rural or small towns, we are used to having few choices for meals out, so we'd braced ourselves for this fact and made the most of it. Suggestions for improvement are small (and are a matter of personal taste): It would be nice to have had a railing for the second half of stairs (from landing to top floor). Our family is sensitive to aromas/smells, and we found the air fresheners quite powerful. We had to stow them inside cabinets to make ourselves comfortable (we set the fresheners back out before leaving). No trash bags were provided (maybe previous renters used them all). Luckily we noticed this before heading out for groceries. All in all a wonderful stay at a great property. Spacious, well maintained and clean. No dust bunnies in sight!! VEry enjoyable. If we return to cape charles we will seek out this property. Thank you, thank you for a relaxing getaway!

Perfect for our needs ;-)
Perfect for our needs ;-)
We stated at the property a full week, from July 6th to the 13th. We are a family of five, two adults, three young children (between 2 and 8 years old). We loved the house ! The pictures are really accurate, the owners are quite helpful in regards to questions you might have regarding the house or the city. On our arrival we were surprised how clean the house was; sparkling clean. Our kids spent the next few hour exploring its numerous floors and rooms. We were concerned if it was near the beach : We walked to the beach twice a day, swimming in the morning and late afternoon and coming back to lunch and nap. The whole family was able to walk back and forth, it's really close. Do not neglect the swing under the front porch, ideal place to snack before diner or relax before bedtime. Do not worry about the back. It is clean and useful but you will not spend a lot of time there besides showering after the beach, hanging clothes or grilling a steak on the provided BBQ. Our kids loved to chase toad in the neighbourhood, fish crabs at the pier or collect hermit crab travelling the beach rocks. As parents we were at peace because the waves coming from the bay are small, perfect for young kids and ... the beach is still very quiet so no need to keep a constant presence of an adult in the water near them, the could be easily spotted and the slope of the beach is really smooth. The village itself is still very accessible and it is not crowded with boutique and tourists. Do not miss the Aqua restaurant at the Marina for a great sunset dining experience and you must try the brown dog cafe and its home made ice cream ! Running around the downtown portion of Cape Charles is 3.5 km. And the great thing about Cape Charles is that most of the locals still wave hands to say hello when you pass them; young and old. You fell welcome. A place to discover !

Great place for a family
Great place for a family
This is a sleepy little town with a real Americana feel. People are friendly. Narrow streets are filled with bicycles, golf carts and walkers. The shallow bay water and small waves make this a perfect place for families with young children. The house is conveniently located two blocks from the beach. Plenty of room in the house with plenty of amenities. Definitely check out Kelly's Pub for dinner. Monday night is steak night and it is excellent. A very relaxing and quiet get away in a quaint town.

Great Family Getaway!
Great Family Getaway!
Our stay at this house exceeded our expectations! We had a family/extended family group of 9 stay for the week and enjoyed the amenities(especially washer/dryer/ clothesline) Everything was convenient to get to, loved being able to let the kids explore a nice, quiet beach town and take walks after dark. The home is kept exceptionally clean and the owners are fabulous to work with. We enjoyed using the bikes/boat and sand toys as well. If the bay isn't what you fancy for a day we had a lovely drive over the Bay Bridge (that is an experience in itself!) and spent a day at Virginia Beach. Couldn't ask for a nicer property or owner.

About the owner: Our family has been visiting Cape Charles since 1993. We have 2 daughters who have grown up spending weekends at the beach, playing in the park, visiting the town library, when they were small, and now as teens, the boutiques and shops in town and at the marina. It is such a family-friendly town that has something to offer people of all ages.
Why the Owner Chose Cape Charles:
We love old houses and could not pass up the opportunity to bring an old gem back to its original glory. It is a very good possibility that we may retire here, so we take pride in making this a comfortable place to stay and maintaining this 'our beach home'!
