High Falls cottage description

Ninety miles from the George Washington Bridge and NYC, and on a hill above the Rondout Creek in High Falls, is a one bedroom, 850 square foot apartment that overlooks the Mohonk Preserve and Mountain House on the Shawangunk Ridge. Although attached by a 20 foot hallway to the main house which is the owner's residence, this rental is otherwise completely private, with two entrances. There is no kitchen on site, but an an under-the-counter refrigerator and microwave are available for guests and the cupboard is simply stocked with a few utensils, and there is an electric coffee pot and tea kettle. Although technically a Bed and Breakfast, in that the owners live on site, this rental space is totally reserved for guests of the West Wing only. The outdoor areas have beautiful views of the ridge, a walking path to a secluded spot on the creek, and 3 acres under cultivation for flowers, fruits, berries, vegetables and medicinal and culinary herbs. The property is located just a couple of miles from several trailheads into the Mohonk Preserve and is close to the famous Trapps rock climbing area and Minnewaska State Park. High Falls and Stone Ridge are just 4 miles from the door where you will find all the necessities including farmers' markets, the High Falls Food Co-op, a number of restaurants, a pharmacy, a liquor store with a great selection, a full grocery store, antiques, gifts, and gas stations. Everything you need for a great country experience!

Guests enter the West Wing through the double Eastlake stained glass doors into the private hallway lined with glass windows. This opens into an expansive room with 22 foot ceilings, a large Moroccan lantern over a huge Iranian carpet on polished concrete floors with radiant heat. One wall is lined with bookcases, another with a sideboard stocked with a teakettle, coffee machine, and an under-the-counter refrigerator. A flat screen TV is available along with HBO, network channels, Netflix and ITunes movie rental. A spiral staircase leads up to an open loft with a 14 foot long and 48' wide built in window seat/bed. Seating in the living area accommodates three in an upholstered club chair from the 1940's, a leather library chairs and more seating or lounging on the teak daybed. A ceiling fan and AC keep the West Wing comfortable in summer. The red bedroom is decked out with an antique queen-size bed, Moroccan curtains and an en suite bathroom with separate shower and bath tub. Parking is available outside the front entrance. The lawns, garden and small farm areas circle the house on all sides.

My husband and I came here for a 2-day romantic getaway right after our wedding (a "mini-moon," we called it). It was perfect for us, a private romantic getaway with breathtaking views of the mountains, a pond right outside, private access to the nearby creek, friendly neighbors, and most of all, a really attentive and gracious host. Sterrett sent us an email about a week before our arrival that was thoroughly detailed with EVERYTHING to do in the area, from the oldest food co-op in the country to a lady down the street who used to work in restaurants/catering and now hosts private dinners in her kitchen. (Side note: My hubby and I had an amazing romantic dinner for 2, special ordered to our dietary restrictions (he's vegan AND allergic to lots of things), which we never would have known about had Sterrett not given us an extensive list of things to try in the area.) The room itself is almost more of an apartment, except without a kitchen. It has a beautiful, enormous living room, loft area, bedroom with really comfy bed, and a gorgeous bathroom with jacuzzi! It's ornately decorated, pristine, gorgeous, SO clean, WOW! We fell in love the moment we walked in. The living area has a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker and hot pot to boil water, as well as a fully stocked cupboard with plates, utensils, cups etc., so we brought our own food for breakfast/lunch and managed just fine. We left our dirty dishes on a table outside the front door, and they were always returned very quickly. We can't say enough good things about this place. The only thing I'd "warn" people about (though it's not a warning in the least) is that we found it in an online search for B&B's in the area, but it doesn't serve breakfast. It's a place to stay. But that shouldn't deter you from this gorgeous place. We can't wait to go back and bring the dog next time!

I spent 2 delightful nights at the West Wing. I was looking for a quiet place to stay before heading north to take an art class. I could not have picked a better spot. First, of all, it is a beautiful location. Second, the accommodations are first rate. Everything was very tasteful and artfully decorated. It is very private and quiet. It would be a perfect hideaway for someone who wants to write or read and enjoy nature. It is also close to beautiful small towns and good restaurants for someone who wants to get out and about. I loved my stay and would love to return someday.

If you are looking for a perfect home base to explore the many attractions of the Hudson River Valley, this property will not disappoint. The owner attended to our needs regarding extra bedding for my mother who accompanied my husband and I on our two day stay. She slept comfortably on the daybed in the main living area. A half bath in the hallway leading to the main house was made available for her use.The gardens outside the French doors were enjoyable as was the sunrise view of the neighboring mountains.I would definitely recommend this property to a friend and my husband and I intend to return in the future. For a special treat have a meal at the nearby Mohonk Mountain House or visit the Walkway across the Hudson. The spiral staircase leading to the loft area is best suited for younger folks. Tea is provided but no coffee so bring your own.

We were delighted with this charming cottage and the beautiful surroundings. It exceeded our expectations, and the extensive gardens, the views of the rolling hills, the peaceful sunsets, and the atmospheric early morning fog all contributed to the magic. The owner, Sterrit, was very accommodating and graciously supplied a few items we requested. The cottage is rather challenging to find, even with Sterrit's directions, so visitors must be willing to wander a bit-- really a pleasure in such lovely countryside. We enjoyed exploring High Falls and New Paltz and highly recommend the Hudson River Cruise from Kingston, as well as a visit to quaint Rhinebeck.

My husband and I just spent a lovely week at this idyllic setting. The accommodations and setting are beautiful, the hosts friendly and very accommodating. Time spent in quiet, a beautiful garden, fresh air and the added pleasure of observing one very little brown bunny and a graceful and delicate hummingbird.

My husband and I stayed one night and wished we could be there longer. The West Wing was a wonderful place to stay to relax and regroup after a long drive. The accommodations were nothing less then perfect and very comfortable. I would recommend everyone to stay here. I hope to come back to the Hudson River area for a longer visit next time and a definite stay at the West Wing . Thanks to our host Sterrett for her warm hospitality.

My husband and I had a wonderful, restful short stay here after delivering our son to overnight camp. The West Wing was exactly as described - or better. Very clean & well-maintained, with beautiful grounds and room to stretch out within the cottage. The cottage was quiet and beautiful - so many books to examine, too. Sterrett was available and gracious. She answered all of our questions and directed us to local restaurants and sights as we explored the area. The loft space would be ideal for school age kids' or teens' sleeping, too. Very highly recommend and would stay there again if we are ever in the area. Thanks!

A study in contrasts. Wake with the birds and watch the sun rise from the back patio. Or, watch the sun set from the cozy front porch, libations at hand. Wonderfully secluded property with private access to Rondout Creek, and yet, just minutes away from High Falls, Stone Ridge, and of course, New Paltz. Both Western and Eastern furnishings - from antique cupboards to kilims - are juxtaposed throughout. Colorful but still serene, light filled, and immaculate. Guaranteed that you will want to linger here longer than you had originally planned.

We just returned from this lovely place yesterday and I wanted to write a review right away. Words can't describe how beautiful, tranquil and relaxing this accommodation is. Sterrett was very welcoming and kind. The pictures of the rental do not do it justice! it was by far one of the neatest places we've ever stayed. The furnishings and decorating are really cool! We dropped our bags off at the rental and went out to explore the nearby town of New Paltz. We found a great wine store and ordered some takeout from a restaurant on Main Street (P&G's may have been the name of it) to take back to the house, because we knew once we returned we would not want to leave until we had to check out the next day! We sat outside and enjoyed the view from the small deck in the back, and just took in the beauty of the surroundings. We can't wait to return to the awesome West Wing in High Falls! Thanks Sterrett!!!

                  Year Purchased: 2002

About the owner: I am a painter and my husband is a writer and runs a graduate program in NYC. We needed space to work and found this beautiful hilltop with creek access. We put up 2 barns from the early 1800s and started establishing gardens and an edible landscape. I also have two rentals just across the creek, VRBO #379093 and #381193. I love to build, save old structures and keep my hands dirty and busy when not in the studio. High Falls is a great location for an easy commute into the metropolitan area while being worlds away in a true Hudson Valley paradise.

Why the Owner Chose High Falls:
This property is located in a geologically unique area adjacent to 25,000 acres of protected land that is home to the Mohonk Preserve, Mohonk Mountain House, Minnewaska State Park and many reservoirs within the watershed of NYC. The villages are historic, the food is fresh, and the countryside infectious. And it's an easy drive to so many great locations along the Hudson River, not to mention into NYC.
