Year Purchased: 1999
About: I'm Lexy Lovell - my father and step-mother, Doug and Alida Lovell, built Sandpiper in 1999 on the family compound of Ellingwood. My siblings and I love coming here every summer, but we are not able to stay year round.
Why Blue Hill:
Long ago the family owned a hefty position in a granite quarry that went bankrupt in 1907. The company said to the shareholders that they could have the land and so these intrepid city folk set out for the long trip up here. Upon arrival, they sent home a telegram saying: 'Found paradise. Come immediately! ' We think you will feel the same way.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Sandpiper has a spectacular view of Blue Hill Bay with the islands and mountains of Acadia in the distance. East Blue Hill is a very special village, off the beaten path, so it takes a little while to get there. It is approx. 1 hour from Bangor. Bar Harbor is more like 30 minutes. The villagers have a coffee social every Saturday morning from 10:00 am when the people come to the one room post-office (with a pot bellied stove) to get their mail. The village has its own boat ramp and playground which is perfect for kids. East Blue Hill has a one room library. 'Downeast' magazine rated EBH was one of the best kept secrets of Maine. There is ample opportunity to learn about natural history with MERI (Marine MERI (Marine Environment Research Institute) located in the town of Blue Hill. Blue Hill has a wonderful library and many activities. They sponsor everything from film series to Lego clubs. Kniesel Hall is well known for its classical music offerings. Restaurants The Blue Hill Inn Lovely food, top notch, romantic The Blue Hill Wine Shop Great wine, very good prices, wonderful cheeses and sausages (Bianco's from Brooklin, ME) and world class espresso and baked goods for the morning with a lovely view of the water. Arborvine and Arborvine Deep Water Brew Pub Take your choice – you can have very fancy, white tablecloth, lovely (expensive) food or you can have wonderful pub style food The Fishnet Fried clams, lobster rolls, yum! Barncastle Very good wood fired pizza, New England comfort food Great grocery shopping: Tradewinds Blue Hill Food Coop (reciprocal privileges if you are a member of a coop). Farmers’ Market at the Blue Hill Fairgrounds every Saturday morning 9-11:30.More fun things to do: There's great hiking up Blue Hill Mountain and on other trails.
