Built in 1896, this home retains all its historic charm yet has been brought up to date with an open concept main level and 21st century appliances. The location simply could not be better, as the home is on a quiet side street yet within a short walk of everything. It is only steps from a concentration of restaurants known as Restaurant Row, with tables out front by the sidewalk. Stanton Park, which is ideal for small children, is one block away. Union Station, from which virtually every sightseeing tour in Washington departs, is three blocks away, as are the Senate buildings, and immediately beyond them is the National Mall with major sights such as the Smithsonian museums and the National Archives.

The home has been furnished for a family of four, and also has a crib, high chair, and stair gate for baby. It is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is quiet yet so centrally located that the sites are within walking distance, a huge plus since none of them has parking. You will live like a local, walking one block to the grocery store with the house shopping cart, or getting around on DC's bright red public bicycles, which you can pick up at a bike rack close to the house.

Should you wish to travel further afield, you could catch the Metro (a.k.a. underground) at Union Station, or pick up a rental car there. Visitors who arrive by car typically park at Union Station for the duration of their stay. If arriving by rental car, you can return it at Union Station to save money during your stay.

Although we are steps from Restaurant Row, you will find the house equipped with a cook's kitchen. Whether it is a coffee grinder, a blender for margaritas, or a selection of spices, you will find it on hand.

Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, a starter set of toiletries, etc. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

The house is 100% powered by solar panels and locally sourced wind power.

My two pre-teen daughters and I stayed at this house. The description of the house is spot on and the Owner is very accessible and provides all necessary information and helpful tips! The owner provided umbrellas as it was raining during our stay. The house was spotless when we arrived! I love how the lock is a keypad - so that I don't have to worry about losing the keys. And, if you are worried about security of the keypad, the house has a small mudroom with a second locking door. The location was perfect - two blocks from Union Station in a quiet neighborhood! We took the Metro everywhere; the Smithsonian museums are around 2 miles away which makes for a long day of walking with two young kids. Security tip - share the vacation itinerary with your group in case you get separated on the Metro. It is VERY crowded during rush hour and the train operators don't wait for people when they close the doors. My oldest daughter got separated from the rest of us, but she was able to make her way to the right station to reconnect with us. I read from the other reviews that people who rented cars parked them at Union Station. This was convenient as it is close, but keep in mind it cost $22/day. Also, if your flight is in the afternoon but have to check out of the house at 11am, you can check your baggage in at Union Station. Union Station is also the hub for all the big tours. We ended up taking the night time tour of the memorials since we ran out of time during the day. The only inconvenience is taking out the trash (which is an acceptable task to stay in this home away from home). The patio that leads to the alley is raised without a ramp, so the garbage cans were a little difficult to wheel out when they were full. Another tip I would add is that the Owner might want to provide directions to the Washer/Dryer - I did a load of laundry but wasn't sure in which troth to place the detergent. Overall - I definitely would recommend staying at this place when you are in Washington, D. C.!

Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner response: The manual for the washer-dryer was lying up on top of them, but since that is quite high it can be hard to see. I will come up with some more visible spot such as a sleeve on the wall. I really appreciate practical suggestions like that, they allow us to constantly make little improvements that benefit future guests.

For our annual "girl" trip, we selected Washington, DC and we were delighted with this town home. Everything was immaculate, including the baseboards. (I always look, and almost always am disappointed.). Alec, the owner, provided a terrific handbook that covered everything from the location of the shopping cart so we could look like locals, to the name of a limo service that transported us to the airport. He checked in with us the day of our arrival to ensure everything was as expected, which it was. The location could not have been better. We walked everywhere with just a couple of exceptions. We felt very safe, in part because of the high level of security in the area, but also because the town home is in a nice residential district. My husband, who was not with us, was so enthralled by my description of our trip, announced he wants to go to DC and stay at this charming town home next year! Fine with me! It's impossible to see all of DC in 6 days.

We are so happy we choose to stay in this Capital Hill brown stone. It was spacious, well furnished and equipped, clean and a great location just a few blocks from Capital Hill and Union Station. The owner was excellent at communicating all necessary details, and was very responsive when we couldn't get the TV working. We will definitely stay hear again on our next DC trip. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Our family of five stayed at this home for five nights, and it was perfect for us. It really made Washington, DC doable for our family. One of our children has been ill and doesn't have much stamina. Being able to stay close to all the sights made it possible for us to have rest breaks between activities, or for some to stay in while others went sight seeing. It also helped to have a nice kitchen since our child has a special diet. We were able to prepare his food and also bring in bagels, tacos, sushi and other food from the stores and restaurants nearby so that we could all dine together in the kitchen or on the patio without any stress. The area is very nice and feels safe and lively. We enjoyed feeling like "city people" and found Union Station very convenient for metro or taxis. Walking to the Capitol, Library of Congress and Supreme Court was also easy. Even though this place is advertised for four people, Alec provided an air bed so our three boys slept in the bedroom with bunk beds and an air bed. It is not a big room, but they still had much more space in this apartment than they would have had in a hotel room. Everyone was comfortable. We absolutely loved it and would definitely stay here again. Thank you, Alec!

My family of four stayed in this fantastic townhome for a week. The owner was a joy to work with through the entire reservation process and during our stay. He provided so many details that we easily felt at home when we got there. The home was perfect, it is beautiful and has everything that you could need or want. The location is absolutely ideal, not only is it on a quiet street but it is just a couple of blocks away from both Union Station and the Capitol, you can easily walk to many of the tourist hotspots. We parked our car at Union Station garage for the week and walked everywhere. I would highly recommend this for families, couples, girls weekends, etc. I have friends traveling to DC this summer and will be recommending this lovely place to them! They would be crazy not to rent it :)

We can’t say enough about the property owner, Alec and this beautiful home. We arrived on a cold, rainy evening to a warm, welcoming home. There was soft music playing and the lights were dimmed perfectly. We stayed for 5 days and brought enough food to have every meal at home. The kitchen has a great gas stove and is well equipped with anything you would need from a coffee grinder and blender to measuring cups and plenty of cookware and utensils. The flat screen TVs (in the master bedroom and main level) and cable were a bonus. The beds and linens were top of the line and the laundry, fully equipped with iron and ironing board, on the sleeping level was ultra convenient. Many attractions close by 5:30 so this is a very comfortable home to come back to. It is very clean and looks to be recently updated and well maintained. We felt very safe day and night whether we were walking to the local store or just relaxing at home. As far as location, it is ideal. Walking distance to Union Station where we left our car ($22 per day) during our stay. You can catch the metro, bus or taxi to the attractions which are just minutes away. DC is a very friendly city. We would not hesitate to stay in this house again. Alec has thought of all contingencies such as providing umbrellas, maps, bath and laundry soaps and many other things you may need. He helped to make this a perfect vacation for us.

Absolutely loved our 'home away from home' for a weekend in D.C. We are 'small town' midwesterners but had no trouble fitting into the quiet, very nice rowhouse in this awesome location -- just a few blocks from the train station and Metro. Fantastic amenities -- fully stocked kitchen with all the utensils we needed. We have 2 small children (3- and 5-years) so safety and security were a concern. We had no problems at all. Small grocery store nearby was nice, but expensive -- thought we would save money by eating in but found it was almost cheaper to eat out. Beds were very comfortable and after a long day walking the mall and museums everyone slept well. Homeowner was easily accessible and quick to respond to some questions we had during our stay. Can't wait to stay here again!

Traveling to DC for business for the 3rd time and joyfully stayed here instead of the conference center hotel yet again. So much more comfortable with lots of bright space, comfy beds, and beautifully appointed full Kitchen. Walking distance to Union Station for the commute to the conference was a big plus! Walking distance to the National Mall for the 2 of us not attending the conference was also important for sightseeing. We were at the center of everything with great restaurants, a well stocked grocery and a very well stocked fine wine & spirits cellar, Schneider's of Capital Hill just a short block away. We always felt safe and walked all over the place day and night. The owner, Alec, was super helpful and undid the bunk beds for us among other things to make our stay there a memorable one. We would definitely stay again if we are so lucky as to get to come back next year.

We visited from Ireland for a week. Three generations of my family stayed in this property and it worked great for everyone from my 1 and half year old daughter to my mother in law. This is a beautiful property finished to an extremly high standard and has all the facilities and amenities you could want in a home away from home. I particularly appreciated the available facilties for babies - highchair, plastic plates (in addition to regular ones), crib, stair gate. Having cooking and laundry facilities was also a big plus over a hotel stay with a baby. The house has been very recently done up and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The owner Alec was a pleasure to deal with and very prompt to respond to any query. We'd a minor problem with one of the bathrooms while we were there but Alec sorted it out as soon as we contacted him. The location of the house is very convenient for everywhere you might want to visit in Washington. It's a short walk (less than 10 mins) to the Mall with the Capitol Building, Supreme Court and most of the museums and monuments. It's an even shorter walk (5 mins) with restaurants and a supermarket along the way to Union Station where you can get the Metro, trains and buses. Washington is a great city to visit and this is a great house to stay in. Can't recommend it enough!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2012

About the owner: I am an engineer and management consultant with a passion for marine environmental issues and ocean exploration. During the daytime I work for a major software company, in the evenings I run our vacation rentals, and late at night I build submarines in my garage.

Why the Owner Chose Capitol Hill:
My wife and I invest in properties that meet two fundamental criteria; they must be ideally located for visitors, and nice enough that we would like to live in them ourselves. That translates to properties located in the five or six blocks of Capitol Hill closest to the National Mall, homes with historic charm, and with open floor plans on the ground floor. They must be on streets that are attractive yet quiet.

The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.
