Ellijay cabin description

Dennis was an 1800's era community located along Rock Creek between Ellijay and Chatsworth in North Georgia. Rock Creek (stocked trout stream) is the major stream draining the south side of Fort and Cohutta mountains. It once provided needed power for a grist mill, blacksmith shed, and saw pit. Only the grist mill and beauty still remain.

A very pretty wet weather waterfall cascades off the mountain side. The creek is crystal clear and fresh out of the National Forest; you will enjoy fishing while the children splash and explore. The Pinhoti Trail is only a fourth mile away and leads all the way to the Appalachian Trail in Gilmer County.

The cabin is very family friendly - some antiques, some great art work, lots of books and magazines, a wonderful screened porch with a swing and comfortable chairs, and lots of places to relax!

It’s a wonderful place for a laid-back, relaxing break with (or maybe without) the kids!

I have stayed in a dozen or so mountain cabins in Georgia and nothing compares with the beauty of this property. The pictures do not do it justice. You can see and hear the water everywhere and if you're adventurous and care to hike will be extremely well rewarded. The cabin is as comfortable as they come and the whole property has a feel like no other.

Very impressed with this place. The perfect combination of a rustic, secluded setting with stores and restaurants within a 3-10 mile drive. The back porch is 30 yards or so from the creek. A nice area for picnicing with a fire ring is located near the cabin. Those willing to hike upcreek will find deep swimming holes and a cascade suitable for tubing (which my grandsons loved). A wet weather waterfall may be viewable out the big living room windows. The cabin is very comfortable and very interesting in terms of design and furnishing. A well equiped kitchen and a stocked pantry reflect the intent of the owners that you have all you need for an enjoyable visit. Highly recommended by me and my 8 and 13 year old grandsons! We spend three very enjoyable days here.

This is a terrific property and a unique cabin with all the luxuries you'd ever need. We were there with four children, ages 7-12. We all explored the creek --water shoes a must! One day we walked up the creek and thru the woods to the swimming hole. Another day we walked down the creek and hiked up into the cave. All the kids were challenged just a little bit, and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. By the end of the week they were all more confident hikers and "creekwalkers." For the less adventurous, you could spend a lot of time in the cabin if you wanted, enjoying the antiques and decorations, reading, cooking, playing games, or watching TV. The screened-in porch was my absolute favorite. It overlooks the rushing creek and has a porch swing --my goodness-- what more could you want! Another bonus of this location is that it's a quick drive into town if you don't have the energy to cook after a long day of exploring. In sum, if you want creekside, charming, and secluded yet close to civilization, this is the place for you.

If you are looking for peace, quiet and relaxation in a beautiful private setting, this is the place. It is "away from it all" but close to anything you might need in the way of a day excursion....if you decide to leave at all. Whether hiking, exploring the creek, or just sitting on the front porch listening to the sound of rushing water, you will feel right at home. Sunday we had heavy rain all day, but even just spending the day in the cabin was special. The furnishings are far above what you would normally expect in a rental property. It is obvious the owners take pride in the surroundings, and you have all the amenities you need. Highly recommended!

The cabin was clean and well appointed. The creek and waterfall are spectacular and viewable from inside the cabin and the screened in porch. It is very secluded. We did not see or hear anyone else while on the property. Great attention to detail - including fresh cut flowers, comfortable sheets, kitchen fully equipped including spices and coffee.

here we are again, and it's beginning to feel like coming 'home'. there's been so much rain of late that the rush of the water and waterfall is like a constant lullaby. it was so pretty when we got here yesterday that we immediately hiked further up the river than we've ever been. gorgeous water falls, beautiful, natural, un-touched piece of heaven! we wanted to keep hiking, but the sun was going down :). today is overcast & rainy, but Emmett just left to buy worms at the store to continue his hope of landing that big fish in the swimming hole. :) I'll be content to sit by him & breathe it all in. thank you for sharing your treasured home! I have one word to describe our stay at Dennis Mill Cabin ... PERFECT!! We really needed a get away & this was perfect in every way. We have no complaints at all. The minute we drove through the gate, we felt the peace and tranquility of Dennis Mill. The property is beautiful & there is so much you can do (or not do) there. Hiking, fishing, relaxing & just enjoying listening to Talking Rock creek. And the cabin is wonderful! So much thought went into every little detail. It invites you to relax. Thank you, Angie & Rick, for sharing this "little piece of heaven". We will be back. We said we wanted to come back with our family, but we may save this as our secret place!

This was an amazing and relaxing getaway. Every comfort was thought of in the cabin. The decor was beautiful and functional. Don't miss Angie's artwork on the walls, great stuff! The scenery outside was like going back in time for awhile. We felt like the only people on the mountain. We loved being in the cabin and being out of it. Spent a day hiking the property and came back to the hot tub for some relaxation for our aches! The fire was warm and inviting and the house itself was so creatively done. We loved everything about it. You could tell serious thought went into every detail in the place; beauty and function all wrapped up together! We loved the alone time, but will definitely be back with the kids in warmer weather. We hope to find the cave next time. I think we hiked over it!

My fiancée and I spent Columbus Day weekend at the Dennis Mill Cabin. We needed a break from the stress that comes with day to day life. The cabin was charming, full of character, and very comfortable. Everything necessary was easily accessible. The creek was beautiful, so very soothing and enjoyed walking the property. We built a fire to roast marshmallows, something neither of us had done in years. Unfortunately we were never able to access the Internet. We also did not realize there was no standard television reception so we missed our standard Saturday football games. All in all it was a wonderfully relaxing weekend. We appreciate having the opportunity to visit your cabin. Thanks again, Patti and Phil

Owner response: Sorry about internet access, had put a new router and forgot to change access number. Number is now changed on info sheet. Also, can watch most football games on the internet on ESPN3. - - - -

                          Owner info

About the owner: Rick and Angie dreamed of having a cabin at Dennis Mill every since the original cabin burned in the late '60's. Rick grew up spending the summers there and wanted his grand kids to have that experience. In 1999 their son, Ethan, took a month between college and work to help his dad start the cabin and get it in 'the dry'. It was completed over the next few years. They love hiking. Have hiked all the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. They have a goal to see all the waterfalls in GA and TN. (See Facebook) After building a home on a river and not staying at the cabin as much, they decided to share it with you as a week-end rental - - - -

                          Why the Owner Chose Ellijay:
Dennis Mill Cabin is on property that has been in the Hix family since 1944. This was once a community with a post office, blacksmith shop (one there on old foundation with mill race behind it that used to have a wheel to turn blacksmith equipment). The old grist mill is still standing with a race from an old dam up the creek. Great hike for young and old. There was once a cabin on property, burned in early 60's. Always a dream to have a cabin for the grandkid's to enjoy.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Number one, it is so pristine and unique. Hundreds of wildflowers not seen just anywhere. Hiking up to old home sites in the wilderness area on Still Hollow Branch (this branch comes into Rock Creek just across from the covered picnic tables). The creek is stocked with trout at the bridge, making good fishing. Perfect place to teach kids to swim with its big shallow areas and also small rapids with deep 'bath tub' areas just right for swimming. Winter is a favorite time for us because we love to build a fire in the wood stove, open the doors and watch the fire, drink hot tea and read a book, or gaze at the frozen waterfall, watch it snow. Build bonfires and roast marshmallows. Sitting on screened in porch watching kids play or listening to the sound of creek racing over the rocks, is our favorite thing in summer. Kingfisher flies by all day. Great Blue Heron's fish on the creek. Deer come by for a visit occasionally. Bears never show themselves but leave claw marks on trash cans occasionally. Large flock of turkey visit occasionally. Watching the sunset reflect in the creek is awesome. Early morning sun hitting the Mill Wheel is quiet a site. Cabin has so many little treasures that we made a list of things to spy - a fun game for children and adults. Always a flower of the week for you to look for.
