Mena cottage description
The house is both straw bale and traditional stick built with three bedrooms and two bathes as well as an outdoor shower. There is also a small office/utility room that has a twin bed and a sun room with a twin bed. There is a pond in front of the house so you can watch the fisherman in the family. The house was designed for outdoor living, with windows that have screens and ceiling fans, though there is air conditioning in all rooms for those who suffer from the heat. The patio is a wonderful place to spend time just soaking in the beauty of nature. In the evening it is lit with amber lighting which gives off a soft light. It is an extremely snug house for winter days, with a fire in the wood burning stove and the fire place lit. There is electric heat if you are not a fire bug. There is also a play house for the kids with a T.V. and DVD player.

Peaceful fall retreat
Peaceful fall retreat
Every year our group of friends plan a weekend trip to explore the Fall colors of Arkansas. While looking for accommodation for a large gp of 8, we came across the STRAW BALE ARTIST RETREAT. This beautiful cabin was tastefully build & furnished. The owners passion for travel was abundantly clear with the selection of decorations all through the house. We explored the scenic drive over the weekend and returned home after a few short hikes around the area. The cabin was well stocked with utensils and spices to cook multiple meals. The Walmart located about 13miles from the cabin also helped. We spent the night in the backyard playing our guitar and humming songs while the logs burned keeping us warm. The beautiful pond beside the cabin reflected the fall colors and was a breath-taking sight to wake-up to. We took the Canoe into the pond as well... A good weekend retreat from Dallas, a very warm owner who also gave us suggestions on things to do in the area. Definitely coming back next year!

Our family of 5 took my parents to the cabin for 3 days. The cabin had plenty of room for the 7 of us. My parents have been to over 100 countries and both of them remarked that the Straw Bale Artist Retreat was the cutest cabin they have ever been to. We are a cold natured group so we loved all the heating options (wood stove, fireplace, wall heater unit in kitchen, space heaters in every room, and the dual mattress heaters on every bed). There was much attention to detail given to all the bedding, decorations, art and furniture. We went to Little Mo hiking trails about 20 miles from the cabin for a day adventure. The hiking was beautiful. She told us where the food was for the deer if we wanted to feed them. We saw deer at least once a day. The cabin is a perfect place to unplug from the rat race of life. The owner has many books to choose from and offered any to us if we found one that interested us. The kitchen had anything we needed for cooking (spices, canned food). It also had a coffee maker. We brought all our own food but it was nice to know that there was a McDonalds 15-20 min from the cabin in case we ran out of food (we have 3 teenagers). The owner was easy to work with and returned our deposit within 3-4 days even though we broke one of her drinking glasses. We would definitely like to go again.

First off, Sondra was very easy to work with. When we arrived, the house was beautifullly prepared and extremely clean. The pictures do not do this property justice. The house has a fireplace as well as a woodburning stove that put off plenty of heat to keep the main area of the house very warm even when the temperature outside is below freezing. The kitchen and living room are connected in a open space with a very high ceiling. These rooms are tastefully decorated and there is plenty of furniture for 6-8 people to enjoy each other company. The kitchen is clean, well stocked with spices and essentials, and had all of the appliances we would expect at our own homes/apartments. The downstairs bathroom is very modern (heated floors/walk in shower/double sink) and large. The downstairs also contains a sunroom that we did not use much but would be perfect for reading and enjoying nature through the large windows and comfy bed/chairs. Each bedroom upstairs is very individually and beautifully designed. To add to the cozy feel each room has its own heater and each of the matresses contain a matress pad with individually adjustable heaters for each side of the bed. The bed and linins were freshly washed and comfortable. The upstairs bathroom is nicer than it appears in the photos and also very clean but we mostly used the bathroom downstairs. Some small details that mattered to us: the aroma sticks were nice and the cottage always smelled great, the heated floor in the bathroom, the outside sitting area and grill, a stock of firewood in case we ran out, no phone ringing or outside contact during our stay, satillite TV (the guys could watch the bowl games), a canoe for the large fishing pond, and the suprisingly large and beautiful property to explore. The property is on 18 acres and is completely secluded but still a short drive from Mena. The national forest, Lake Ouachita, and numerous hiking/biking/ATV trails are close by as well. Overall my favorite part about this property is how well the owner made the house feel special with interesting but tasteful design and how we got the small cozy cottage feel but still had all of the luxuries of home. Will hopefully stay again. Austin P.

My brothers and I came to this part of Arkansas to hike Eagle Rock Loop. The trailhead is about 15 miles from this house so it was very convenient. Its probably the closest house to the north side of the Loop. The house is great and the owner was very easy to deal with.Very secluded property. We had deer in our front yard every morning. After each day of hiking we would come back and build a fire in the fire ring which is just in front of the house. There is a good size pond too but we didn't fish. I would definitely go back again.

- Nearest Restaurant: mena at 13.5 Miles
Year Purchased: 1998
About the owner: I am a artist and work in clay and fiber. Clay was my first love and so I make pottery and sculpt in it. Fiber came along later and I found that weaving is great in the winter when I just cant face getting my hands wet.
Why the Owner Chose Mena:
This property spoke to me the first time I saw it. Everything I looked at after seeing it just did not touch me the same way.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
It is secluded as it is in what is called a hollow. There is a great pond for fishing and lots of room for walking.
