West Jefferson cottage description
This property is not on a steep incline nor is it remote. It is nestled in a beautiful small valley, also called a 'holler'. The wonderful mountain views are all around and there's a creek in the woods across from the property, so although you can't see it, you can hear the water rushing over the rocks. Our favorite thing to do is sit on the front porch in the Amish-made hickory rocking chairs, sip coffee and watch the birds. As evening descends on Bald Mountain, the fireflies come out and start winking, so again we rush out to our chairs and start a-rockin'. This time with a glass of wine from the local New River Winery! Come experience it for yourself.
The cottage is a beautifully modified modular home and has 2 Bedrooms, 2 full Bathrooms and is cozy, clean, bright and sunny.
There is a large, eat-in kitchen with farmhouse table and a big comfortable living room, both with great views.
The house is decorated in the rustic Blue Ridge Mountain style, with a Black Bear and Native American motif.
The beds are both queen size and have peeled Aspen log headboards and brand new, comfy Serta mattress sets.
The back deck overlooks a Christmas tree farm...filled with North Carolina Frazer Firs, or 'set a spell' on the front porch in the Amish-made hickory rocking chairs. You're in the mountains now and relaxation will enfold you like nowhere else on earth.

- There is so much to do up here. Things that we love to do are driving the Blue Ridge Parkway. There's lots of little shops featuring hand crafted products at the different mileposts. (The nearest entrance is approx 8 miles down Hwy 221 then just off Hwy 441 at milepost 261) Canoeing the runs on the New River is wonderful at Zaloo's Canoes - Canoe and Kayak Rentals in Jefferson, shopping and eating in Historic Downtown West Jefferson...especially at the Hillbilly Grill and being pampered at the Bee Natural Salon which is also downtown at 208 S. Jefferson Ave. They pamper your hair with completely organic hair color and hair care products! And your trip would not EVER be complete without a visit to The Cabin Store! There's also golfing at the Mountain Aire and Jefferson Landing golf coarses, fly fishing in the New River, Winery tour and tastings at the New River Winery at the Old Lansing School, hiking Mount Jefferson and of coarse there's the ski resorts which offer zip line rides in the summer and wonderful snow skiing and snow tubing in the winter. Just 25-40 miles away are Hawks Nest, Appalachian, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Seven Devils. For your groceries there is a beautiful modern Ingles not 3 miles from the house. They have a wide range of organic foods and a great wine section!...moreless

I had a delightful stay in Black Bear Inn Road Cottage. The cottage is comfortable with all the amenities needed for a getaway in the mountains. Cottage is adorable. Easy access to West Jefferson and all the activities in the mountains. The rushing stream nearby is like a lullaby. Would definitely recommend!

We recently stayed at this property, and were absolutely delighted with it. The photos are accurate, and it is extremely well equipped, with everything you could want, and spotlessly clean. The heating was effective, as it was still a bit chilly in the evenings. It is close to many lovely trails for walking ; close to West Jefferson for all the shopping needs ---Ingles is an excellent supermarket. We found places to eat out in the evenings, but actually preferred to relax in the comfort of the cottage. I saw a number of beautiful birds, just from the verandah. The owner took a personal interest in us, and telephoned on the last morning to check that all had gone well. The local " caretaker" visited us also, and was very helpful, and friendly. We would readily recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful place to relax in comfort. We loved the Elk Nob State Park, the New River State Park, Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Jefferson Mountain State Park, to name but a few of the many attractions within easy reach. The local library were happy for us to link up to the internet each day to contact our family back in Scotland !

Owner response: Thanks again Judith and I'm so happy that you and hubby had a great time! I'm still learning my way through the VRBO process so although we spoke by email, I never responded here. Have a lovely summer and hope to see you back next year. Cheers! Kim

About the owner: I was looking for a place in the mountains after 30+ years of Florida summers. I started out in the Boone / Blowing Rock area of NC, but someone suggested West Jefferson (Ashe County) because it wasn't as congested. I went and I fell in love.....with the Historic District with it's great antique shops, art galleries (big art presence there) coffee houses, cafes and weekly farmers market. With the miles of Christmas tree farms. With all the forks of the majestic New River to hike beside, canoe upon and fly fish in. With the long stretches of Blue Ridge Parkway. With the people, the vibe and the smiles.
Why the Owner Chose West Jefferson:
I was against a property with a steep driveway. Especially in the winter, me being a 'flatlander' and all. So this property fit that bill as well...it is an easy drive in and out. It's a peaceful place without being too remote, neighbors have pride in their property and are very friendly and helpful. it's close to town, just 25 miles to Boone....it just felt right.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The chairs on the front porch face the West and the sunsets over Bald Mountain are pure magic. Out front there is also a creek in the woods across from the property which you can't see but you can hear the water rushing over the rocks. Very tranquil. There's the aforementioned Christmas tree farm basically in the back yard. So beautiful.
