Thanks for making our 25th Wedding Anniversary and our 1st trip to Hawaii spectacular. We spent 10 days here snorkeling, hiking, boogie boarding and just plain relaxing. We enjoyed every second and hope to return someday. You have been a gracious host and I hope you continue to prosper in the future. Aloha

What a fantastic time we had! We love this area of Kauai. Kapaas restaurants and shops, the river kayaking and hike to secret falls and hanging out in the cottage - all made for a perfect vacation. We explored a little too - the hike at the end of the road on the north shore was the highlight, although we are still sore from it! We did the extra 2 mile hike to the waterfall which was well worth it!! Thank you for your hospitality! Aloha,

We had no idea what to expect! Thank you for opening this beautiful cottage to us. As others have said before us, it truly does feel like home. I recommend other read the previous advice, that was a great healp for us in finding places to eat & beaches to visit. Our highlight was the NaPali coast Sunset Cruise. Candace recommended this to us and it was a favorite. We enjoyed the helicopter tour too. Get a real feel for Kauai! We are reluctant to head back to MT we know we'll return here.

We will return tossing the beautiful leis in the ocean when we leave to seal the deal! Thank you for all the special touches you provided but mostly for sharing Bo! We enjoyed a wonderful dinner of Ahi with Bo last night and he has not left our side since! This place will definitley be the mental image we conjure up...

Dear Candace, This was the perfect place for us to relax after our Honolulu Marathon experience...we went crazy exploring everything on beautiful Kauai. We were grateful for all the convenient amenities that made staying here feel like home: internet, DVD player and Kauai by air video, kayak, washer/dryer with detergent, beach equipment, etc. etc...It was wonderful to enjoy breakfast on the terrace each morning. Our vacation was enhanced by your helpful tips and warm welcome...Thank you...

It's hard to put into words the feeling of being here in this amazing place. I guess it's called Aloha, but whatever it is, you certainly provide it here Candace! I could echo many previous guests' appreciations for all the comforts and conveniences of staying here: the library, the beach gear, the dock. Everything felt so easy and perfect. You and your boys - Meow! are wonderful hosts! Kauai is so very special I feel so fortunate for our time here! Mahalo Aloha until we meet again...

So sad to be leaving the warmth and beauty of Kauai...only to return to the cold and beauty of North Idaho! We loved every minute of our stay here, especially this lovely place here so centrally located to takin in most of the island. Mahalo Candace! We packed in as much as we could in the 9 days here - could have used at least another 9 days! Highlights of our trip included: swimming with sea turtles and fishes at Tunnels Beach, exploring Mahaulepu beaches, Kokee Park and the unbeliveable vists overlooking Na Pali Coast, Larsens Beach. We will return someday - hopefully sooner than later! Aloha

Dear Candace, Thank you for porviding a sweet hideaway. Everything here was perfect for our week's stay. Having all the beach equipment and the kayaking gear was WONDERFUL. Mahalo from the bottom of our hearts! To the next lucky guests: You are so fortunate to have that kayak! The trip upriver and subsequent hike to the falls is spectacular. This time of year, you will have a big stream crossing - hold tight to the rope and do not cross your feet. Swim at the falls! Snorkeling is great at Tunnels and KEE Beaches, get there early for parking. Boogie boarding was best at Brennecke Beach. There and Poipu are also the best places for sea turtles. Waimea Canyon was pretty, but if you are planning any hiking, be prepared for very slippery mud and rocks. We did not make it to the swamp due to the mud. But for sight seeing, it is beautiful. If you are an early morning walker or runner, the path down at Lydgate Park is very nice, as is the paved path just north of here at Anahola. We did hike to Hanakapi Falls from the Kalalau Trail. I wish we could recomment it, but even for every avid hikers like us, we just were not overwhelmed by it. You have to spend almost the entire time compleely focused on your feet due to the muddy rocky unstable trail, that you miss the scenery and end up witha sore neck! The falls are pretty, we did not swim - too cold and cranky. Food & Treats we like: Jo-Jos Shave Ice in Waimea; Papalani Gelato in Poipu; Fish Express in Lihue; Marks Place in Lihue; Korean BBQ Kinipopo Plaza, just north of here; Passion Cafe Kinipopo Plaza and opens early for breakfast; Harleys Tropical BBQ Coconut Marketplace. Lastly, we loved the kitties, and we probably spoiled Bo. He plinked the screen on the deck early every morning to be let in. Our last few nights, he slept on the bed with us. He would run up the stairs with us each evening when we returned for the day. Lenny also visited upstairs a few times. We sure hope the next folks like cats! Have a wonderful stay!

Here's what we really liked about the property. 1. Great location, right by the river. 2. Candace was really nice greeting us upon our arrival. 3. Amenities galore! Using the kayak was great, right by the river. She has everything there you could need. 4. Everything is close by for food, dining, shopping, day trips to the North shore, etc, 5. Decent view from the cottage. These items were not so great. ( this may not be as important to you, as it was to us ). 1. Heavy rain woke us up every night, you are up stairs so you really hear it when it pours. 2. Birds were very loud every morning & the sun shines brightly into your room, i.e. 6-7a.m. The existing shades do not keep the room dark. 3. A/C for the cottage is a single wall unit, not a whole house system, the cottage stayed fairly warm from late morning thru early evening. Here's what we really didn't like at all. 1. ANTS!!! they were everywhere in the kitchen, on the counter, stove, in the dishware, and even in the coffee maker, also in the bathroom. We used the ant spray under the sink, but gave up after 2 days. I called Candace about it, but she only offered to spray for them which I already did. We also found ant traps in several areas of the cottage. I also told her at that time we wouldn't feel comfortable staying here again because of the problem, she said sorry and that was it. 2. On our last night we were woken up by a loud garbage truck at 5:20am, my wife and I couldn't go back to sleep after that. We were super tired flying home later that day. 3. Lastly, when we checked out we had to wait to a few minutes while she was on the phone, no apologies, no offers for a credit, partial refund or something / anything! Just thank you & " have a nice life ". We couldn't believe it! Not professional about such a major problem with the ants. We will not stay here again, nor recommend it based on our experience. It wasn't what we expected or hoped for. The ants and being woken up every night ruined it for us.
Owner response:Aloha and thank you for your feedback. The birds singing and the sunrises are the delight of the vast majority of our Guests, the very reason Kauai calls them to Hawaii and here – to these Guests, it is Paradise found! And, the rain at night is the blessing of the island ensuring the most beautiful island in the world continues to be the Garden Island and gifts Guests with sunny days to enjoy all that the island offers! Hawaii is a tropical climate in which insects, rodents and lizards unfortunately thrive. All properties are on a quarterly maintenance program, but Guests may encounter these pests during stay. Contact with critters inside or outside of Guests rental is not reason for a refund of monies. If this does occur, please contact Kauai Calls! To make a report as a trouble call may be scheduled. Reference the signed agreement. Had I been given the opportunity to enter the unit to inspect the situation as it was occurring, I would have been able to assess and immediately correct any issues. I was first made aware there may have been an issue when you called Sunday night at 9:40 PM just 12 hours before your scheduled check out. I offered 3 times during the phone call to immediately come to the unit to assist, and each time you clearly refused my help. An inspection had to wait until after check out; at which time, the unit was found to be free of ants. As an extra precaution, the professional pest control company was called, the unit sprayed, and new ant deterrent placed for optimal effectiveness. For future Guests, starting October 31, 2011 the pest control program is transitioning to 100% Eco-friendly on a bi-monthly spray with rosemary oil and peppermint oil in water base; as well as, Eco-friendly ant deterrent. Standard policy for reporting issues remains in effect as stated in the rental agreement. I live on the same property available 24 hours 7 days a week and am happy to answer questions and to assist. I am happy to turn on the air conditioner in the afternoons to cool down the unit. If I happen to be on an important business call, it may take several minutes to get back to you with a response. I do have texting capability as well. I continue to wish you the best of luck on your new life! Aloha! Candace

Candace, Our honeymoon stay at the Wailua River Hideawy was just perfect! We couldn't have asked for anything more from our adventures here on Kauai. i can honestly say that we did as much sightseeing as is humanly possible in our week's stay. From kayaking the Wailua River and hiking to the Secret Falls, to snorkeling Tunnels Beach, to exploring Waimea Canyon, to collecting shells and glass at Glass Beach, to hiking the rugged terrain of Kalalau Trail on the North Shore. We barely had time to enjoy our sweet Wailua house, but it was the perfect place to come to relax after a long day of exploring and adventures! I can honesly say that I do not want to go home, but plan on coming back to the Garden Island in the near future. What an amazing time we have had and the memories we will have for a lifetime! Mahalo for everything and hope to meet again! P.S. The Olympic Cafe has delicious food!

My husband and I have been to Kauai several times and we always seek an opening at one of Candace's properties. Since our very first time staying in the Hideaway, it has been our favorite by far! It is very secluded but close to everything at the same time. It is the perfect location to be able to reach all other parts of the island. And Candace is the most wonderful hostess ever. She has an wonderful aura that you do not get to experience very often and was like our best friend from the minute we met. She went out of her way multiple times to make sure that we were taken care of and I love that the Hideaway has some of those little special touches such as the Hawaii scented soaps that I love so. The Hideaway is right on the river and we had fun taking the kayak out for a trip to the Fern Grotto. That is a must - and so relaxing. Our favorite evening was eating dinner that we cooked (on the grill that Candace provides) on the lanai with the moonlight shining through the coconut trees. If you listen, you can even hear the ocean waves pounding the shore from the distance. We have truly fallen in love with Kauai as well as Candace and her kitties and will be back many more times! Mahalo nui loa!!

The 'Aloha Spirit' comes in many forms. It was all encompassing on my recent visit to Candace's Hideaway on the luscious island of Kauai. Though it was just my second stay in this cozy but open Hawaiian bungalow, I felt as if I were arriving in a place I could call 'home'. It began with the very friendly greeting from Candace who welcomed me with a plumeria lei and her infectious laugh. I was happy to see her adorable cats again. Lenny and Bo led the way up the stairs to the Hideaway as if they were the official greeters. I loved their entertaining presence during my time there. I purposely cloistered myself on this trip having done the tourist thing during my first visit. This time I wanted to live in each moment with the chance to fully experience my thoughts and feelings in the short time I was to be there. The Hideaway easily allowed me that gift with it's privacy, comfort and surrounding beauty. Some events happened as I planned them like walking down to the river with my morning coffee in hand. I read part of a favorite book on the lanai and had time to write a few pages for my own book. I took a short trip into Kapa'a to buy baby bananas and sunrise papayas at the farmer's market for my breakfast and made sure I had enough essentials for my stay at the Hideaway. Then there were things that showed up, delightfully surprising me during the moments I least expected them. There was the sound of steady night rain cleansing the roof while the lovely fragrance of wild jasmine flowers found it's way through the opened louvered windows. The warm rising Hawaiian sun touching my face to wake me, along with the native birds' 'get up' songs, were treats as well. It was when I was doing nothing that I felt the spirits of the land, the Royal Hawaiians (the Ali'i) who actually claimed this very land by the river as their own so long ago. In the silence, I felt as if I were transported into another time, another culture where the 'Aloha Spirit' was born. This indeed is a very sacred place to stay. After three days I left the Hideaway reluctantly but grateful for my renewed spirit. I know that I will be back for a longer visit, perhaps for a ride up the river in the house kayak and more opportunities for other sweet experiences that open up my senses in such lovely ways.I am so thankful for Candace and the retreat she has created to allow me such an incredible stay at the Hideaway. She is definitely the essence of the 'Aloha Spirit.'

We made a few snorkeling trips to Lydgate Beach and saw a lot of fish. Every time we looked at each other with our snorkels on, we busted out laughing so we still have to get the hang of it, but is was a lot of fun. We kayaked to Secret Falls the day after our 10 mile hike. Not sure if that was the best idea, but both trips were definitely worth it. Thank you for your hospitality. From the Guestbook: October 5 to 11, 2009 Dear Candace, You have the perfect spot here - we could see the early light from the east, as we woke up and the view of the river was so nice. Kayaking was the best - we'd never tried it and we're hooked. The Fern Grotto has changed since the last time was here (35+ years ago for a wedding) but it's still a charming place to see. We definitely enjoyed driving to the most NW and North from the east - it's so picturesque. A big thanks for the use of all the play toys - kayak, snorkel, mats, beach twoels, etc. - we were able to pack very light due to all the extras you have available here. Mahalo,

We (mom, dad, and seventeen year old daughter) enjoyed a week's stay in July 2006 at the Wailua Riverside Hideaway. Our hostess Candace greeted us warmly with leis, chocolate covered macademia nuts, and a big smile. She went out of her way to ensure our comfort throughout our stay and never seemed to mind helping us out when asked. The Hideaway is tucked away in a quiet residential area on the Wailua River. Located on the coconut coast, we found the Hideaway close to shopping and restaurants and perfect for exploring the island at leisure. The beach (not as crowded as we had expected it would be) is within walking distance and Opaekka Falls is just up the road. The Hideaway is warmly decorated in local island style with thoughtful extras. We especially enjoyed the onsite kayak for two. We kayaked up the Wailua River and hiked to Secret Falls which was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation. Guests will enjoy the treetop lanai, air conditioning, gas grill, and internet access. We truly had an enjoyable stay at the Hideaway and would stay here again. Mahalo Candace for your warm hospitality.
Owner response:Aloha Pam and Clay, it was wonderful meeting you and having you stay here at the hideaway! I so love hearing from guests that they have enjoyed their stay! Thank you for your kind words which guide future guests - Mahalo nui loa! Wishing you and your family the Best! Aloha! Candace

The Wailua Riverside Hideaway definitely overachieved our high expectations! This home-away-from-home is exceptionally lovely: soft & inviting from the tasteful decorating hues down to the towels and toilet paper! We enjoyed breakfasting on the rooftop deck amidst opical greenery and melodic birdsongs. The Wailua River - right across the cul-de-sac turnaround - invited us to delightful kayak adventures. We felt like stars in a jungle movie lazily paddling through the lush beautiful foliage. We kayaked and hiked to Secret Falls (with a quick refreshing dip in the pool!), the Fern Grotto, and explored upstream 'til it got too strong to paddle against. Other favorite activities, so far: . North island hike on Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Falls: beautiful, fun and challenging 8 miles. . Caffe Coco in nearby Kapa'a - dinner in a grove with good music & food; laid-back, BYOB. . Nearby hike on Kuamoa-Nounou Trail, a few miles to the top of Sleeping Giant for a great view. . West island hike on Alakai Swamp Trail to Kilohana Vista: incredible views, unusual botanical environment, challenging, rather muddy, 10-miles. . Waimea Canyon is beautiful! . Snorkeling and swimming - Poipu area beaches are good this time of year; a sea turtle swam right up to me! Candace, your place is wonderful, as you are, you're so friendly and thoughtful!

Mahalo Candace! Your Hideaway is so much better than the website shows! Special touches are much appreciated. Best of all: you! You being local can tell us where to go and when. Such a gracious hostess. Thank you!! Your Riverside Hideaway is a super location - central to the island. We enjoyed kayak paddling on the river with flowers floating past. We explored daily bringing our lunch and returned "home" to BBQ dinner. The Huli Huli Chicken at Foodland lasted for a dinner and 2 lunches!! Cafe Coco had lovely atmosphere and is close. One evening we wandered around the Coconut Mall across from Cafe Coco sort of - one stand there sold Hawaiian CD's and played samples for us. Thank you for providing all we needed for a memorable stay! Mahalo!

From the Guest Book: Mahalo Candace, What a beautiful "piece of Heaven" you have here! We really appreciate your willingness to share it w/us. Our favorite part here was being able to sit in the shade of the lanai & read all afternoon. No one told us about the chickens on Kauai so I was quite surprised to hear a rooster crowing in the wee hours of our first morning here. I, being a country gal at heart, loved this wakeup call. If my shoulder was well, I would have taken the kayak out everyday as this is truly one of the most beautiful rivers in the world! This is truly a cozy, relaxed Hideaway & a memorable Christmas for us.

The Hideaway is great - we appreciate all the amenities - and you are a gracious hostess, Candace. Thanks for letting us stay the extra few hours so our last day was not so rushed. We even took a nap in preparation for our long night flight back to "winter" and Kentucky. I could live here so easily! The only reason I'm going back is to convince my children (especially the one with the only grandchild!) to move here too.

Candace, Mahalo Nui Loa :) Your hospitality was as charming and beautiful as this island. Ruthie and I really enjoyed our stay here, especially waking up to the breeze and sunshine in the mornings. As you know, we stayed very active during our visit. Our favorite place had to be old Koloa town and Poipu Beach for sunsets. Hiking to the base of Wailua Falls and swimming in it's pool was very memorable. I forgot to mention snorkeling at Poipu Beach...MAGICAL! Tell your future guests to bring lettuce to feed the fish. There will be hundreds of them! We love the humuhumunukunukuapua'a :) Mele Kalikimaka,

Kauai Sunrise! I'm beginning to wake up with just the breeze and the light - naturally! Joan Anraku Harmony Well Candace, it is time for our vacation to end - all too soon! Pam and I really enjoyed ourselves here at the Riverside. The snorkeling, hiking and kayaking were superb! Kayaking to Secret Falls was a genuine adventure - one we will not soon forget! Thank you for your hospitality! This little hideaway has all the charm one could ever ask for. Mahalo! Joan & Pam

Candace, It's time to pack up everything and head to the cold "Ohio" weather. However, we take many great memories on our journey. You have been the most gracious and thoughtful host imaginable. The "Garden Isle" has been our favorite island so far. We enyoyed each day to the max. To all future guests, please take time to relax and see some of the most spectacular scenery and beaches in the world. There are too many to mention. All of the Kauai books on the shelf are of great help in decision making for each day. Thank you, Candace, the "Hideaway" exceeded our expectations. You have a wonderful paradise here. Most of all we leave behind a friend, you, Candace Keep in touch!

Thank you Candace for such a wonderful stay - such nice touches; Kona coffee, lotions & soaps, soft! towels, and KAYAK! We loved to hike to "not so" Secret Falls & even Fern Grotto was all for us! Cafe Coco was perfect for dinner, lovely twinkle lights & live music. We will be back & tell everyone to come to Wailua Riverside. Aloha, Gabrille & Mike Dublin, CA P.S. take a walk to beach cut - through Wailua River Park boat launch area, walk under bridge, etc. Voila!

Dear Candace, Our many thanks for your hospitality during our stay at your Wailua "hideout". We loved being "far from the madding crowd", yet close enough to Kapa'a to secure anything we might need. You've thought of everything! beach needs, kayak, snorkeling equipment - no need to rush out & buy or rent... The use of a washer, dryer, & all kitchen appliances make it "just like home". I've always said, "I'm not a beach person" and then I came to beautiful Kauai! The North Shore is gorgeous: KE'E Beach & all the other "hideaway beaches" were FAB! And, as a hostess, your are the best! Warm, thoughtful and gracious. Thanks for making our stay so memorable! Mahalo!

Candace - Many thanks for your lovely and warm hospitality...and thanks for remembering our missing third, Diane. This hideaway was perfect, beyond what we expected. The decor and "extras" were so wonderful! We enjoyed the kayak trips so much, but didn't have enough time to do more. Our trip to KE'E Beach was well worth the drive. Lily loved the hike, and we both loved the snorkeling. Today, our last day here, we took a catamaran trip with HoloHolo Charters in Port Allen. Because of weather, we didn't get to see the "Forbidden" Island & Na Pali, but had a tremendous experience none the less - recommend it highly. Kauai is a beautiful place with so much to offer. Thanks to Candace for providing us a home away from home...Take Care!

We were very lucky to have taken a big gamble on selecting this "Wailua Riverside" lodging from many on the internet - very lucky and very happy with its location. This is our first visit to Hawaii and we have had perfect weather - rain for 1/2 hour one day. Our first week was on the Big Island... Here on Kauai we have hiked (our main goal) the first two miles of the Kalalua - Na Pali Trail - only three view points along the trail - very rough, rocky trail - hike only in dry weather - don't wear flip-flops, you need good shoes or boots. After hike, we walked east on KE'E Beach for Na Pali views - walk a long way for best views - beautiful, big beach, be sure to carry chicken food! Opinion on Na Pali hike: a lot of work for few views, but, I guess, it is a tourist "must" - Go, you decide! Near our "Riverside Lodge" we hiked east-side trail to near top of Sleeping Giant - Nounu Trail - many views, good trail, go 200 yards beyond picnic shelter for more grand views - 1 1/4 hour up, 50 min. down!! Near our lodge, walk 10 min. to beach for sunrises over the Pacific. Many beaches to north - favorites were "Secret Beach", not on all maps, just south of Kalihiwai Beach but no hwy signs, drive to dead-end on dirt road (1/2 mile from hwy) then steep descent on bad trail to magnificent, long beach. Also, Anini Beach Park (calm lagoon w/reef) great swimming & snorkeling, showers, etc, long beach. Candace, your place here is PERFECT - central location to rest of island - wonderful accommodations and Lanai!! Again, the perfect place for a vacation - truly wonderful!

From the guestbook: Mahalo Candace for the lovely & relaxing place to stay here on beautiful Kauai. Your "hideaway" is so well-appointed & comfortable. We especially enjoyed the kayak & our excursions up the river to the Fern Grotto & Secret Falls. We're not sure if we actually found the falls or not. We were expecting a big waterfall - but the trail seemed to end at a small pool & very small cascades, so we assumed that was it. Anyone, we're telling ourselves we saw the Secret Falls until we learn otherwise. Again thanks so much for your hospitality. The mangoes are wonderful! Hope you enjoy your stay at our place in Arizona.

This is our 3rd time to this beautiful island. We have seen and done everything we wanted to see and do the first two times. This trip was to just relax. And that we did! Of course we did a couple of things we loved to do - kayak & snorkel, but much of our time was spent reading, sleeping and enjoying our breakfast and dinner on the lanai. Oh and sitting by the river and swimming in the river and...well, I guess we did a lot more than laying around. But we thoroughly enjoyed it all. To Candace we say thanks for your hospitality and a truly warm Aloha welcome! As JW's we enjoyed our association with the borther's and sisters of Kapaa and joining them in field service was a highlight. We will remember this trip forever! Mahalo!

July 22 - 29, 2005 We left our steps on the sand at the Polihale Beach. Our eyes were delighted at Na 'Aina Kai and McBryde Botanical Gardens. Our taste buds enjoyed the curries and the black rice with coconut milk from "The King and I" and the smoothie from Banana Joe. We give our "Thank You" to a wonderful host Candace and our "Mahalo" to a beautiful land and the kindness of it's people. Aura and Florin M. Salt Lake City, Utah
