Spacious one-bedroom Cottage on two acre property
Lonely Planet 'Discover Maui', Top Choice in Haiku, described as 'Pilialoha blends countryside charm with all the comforts of a home away from home. The sunny split-level cottage has one pretty setting, nestled in a eucalyptus grove. Everything inside is pretty, too. But it is the warm hospitality and attention to detail that shine brightest.'
Romantic free-standing spacious one-bedroom cottage, perfect for two people. Living/Dining room with a fully equipped kitchen, with complimentary coffees & teas.
The bedroom is split-level, with the upper level containing a dressing area leading to the bathroom with a shower/tub combination. The step-down bedroom has a queen size bed and a private lanai. There is also an indoor laundry facility (detergent provided). On your arrival day, fruits, juice, milk, bread & cereal will be placed in the kitchen.
The location is very convenient to explore all parts of Maui from here. Many of our guests have expressed how they look forward to coming back to the cottage to relax each evening after their daily activities.
We reside on the same property and are available for assistance and information any time during your stay.
Aloha, Bill & Machiko Heyde, Pilialoha Cottage.

Great setting for a stay in the upcountry of Maui. Off the beaten path, but still relatively close to many sights. Bill and Machiko were wonderful hosts in an ideal VRBO setup; the owners were on site and available if you have questions or need something, but the rental cottage is far enough away to give you lots of privacy. There were so many wonderful amenities with the rental; beach chairs, snorkel gear, fleece coats for Haleakala, laundry facilities right in the unit, and more. The space was well used in the cabin, with the open kitchen & living areas comfortable, and two decks to enjoy the tropical breezes and the wind through the trees. All this, and a properly permitted vacation rental were the reasons we selected Pilialoha, and we were not disappointed. We would stay here again and highly recommend it to others. A spectacular place to stay at a budget price.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

A perfect gem of a cottage in up-country Maui, just as described in the listing. Everything better than expected with lots of thoughtful extra amenities as well. A very well-stocked kitchen.... not just the basics. Coolers and thermoses were so appreciated to take on our daily explorations. The nice extras of fresh flowers, fresh fruit, homemade bread, coffee, milk, and cereal were welcoming, personal touches not usually provided at VRBO's. A well-stocked library of local guidebooks to sights, birds, culture and more is at your fingertips. It is short drive to the North Shore and start of the road to Hana as well as the road up to Haleakala. The cottage is spotless, tastefully decorated, bright, with lots of windows to open to the cool upland breezes. The sound of the breeze blowing through the eucalyptus grove was a perfect lullaby. We loved it and are grateful to Machiko and Bill for sharing their little corner of paradise.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Our hosts, Bill and Mochiko, were extremely warm and gracious. Our cottage was super clean and comfortable. The location is charming. We cannot wait to stay here again and again. We also traveled with our one year old and were very touched to see that there was a basket of baby toys and bath toys and a clean high chair and pack 'n play already set-up and eagerly awaiting our arrival. The three of us couldn't be happier with our stay. Mahalo, Bill and Mochiko.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dear Alanna & Scott: Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. Even though our cottage is not quite "child proofed," you are exceptionally thoughtful guests while staying with your small child, and we really appreciated it. We look forward to seeing you again. Best Wishes and Aloha, Bill & Machiko

Pilialoha Cottage was just what we expected from the website and correspondences prior to our arrival - a perfect getaway for our honeymoon. It's seclusion offered the quiet and privacy that we wanted after spending our days out and about being tourists. It had all the amenities we wanted, plus unexpected extras, like beach towels and mats, boogie boards, snorkle gear, stationary, wine glasses, etc. We loved our little vacation cottage and were sad to leave it. Bill and Machiko are kindly hosts who pay attention to the details that make their guests comfortable while giving them plenty of space and privacy. The cottage was impeccably clean. There is no A/C, but the house is in the upcountry and well ventilated - we were very comfortable. The proximity to Makawao made runs into town to shop, eat, or peruse the local farmer's market very convenient. We hope to make it back someday!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1988
About the owner: Thirty years ago, Bill was transferred to Maui by a major computer company and he is recently retired. Machiko is an artist and avid gardener.
Why the Owner Chose Haiku:
When we moved to Maui over 30 years ago, we immediately fell in love with the Upcountry area more than any other parts of Maui. We purchased this property because of the desirable location and setting. The main house and the guest cottage are perfectly separated from each other, so our guests have their own privacy. We fully renovated and furnished the cottage for our guests travelers. Thanks to our many returning guests, we have been comfortably busy over the past 20 years.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
This is a perfect location to explore the entire island of Maui. Having its own private driveway, hidden from the public road and the forest on one side of the property creates a unique, hidden hideaway to relax. Quiet, yet very convenient to stores & restaurants. But when you just want to let go of Maui's splendor and relax for the day, this cottage on this property is ideal. A collection of books, DVDs & CDs are also provided to keep you company.
