Puako house description
The owner’s grandparents, a Waimea school principal and his wife, began creating this Puako haven in the 1950s, first camping out while painstakingly hand-clearing the lot of its kiawe grove and then building a one-room weekend get-away. Tutu (Hawaiian for “grandmother”) poured her love into planting and gardening, while her husband worked over the years on building the oceanfront rock wall, stone by stone. In time, two more rooms were added, the lanai enclosed, and an airy breezeway covered for a comfortable two-bedroom home with ocean views throughout. Typical of the beachfront homes that have made Puako so beloved, Puako Kai is ideal for two couples or a young family who appreciate a sense of place in a perfectly maintained Hawaiian-style beach house fronted by an extensive coral reef.
For many years Puako Kai was a central part of a cozy weekend community, where folks stopped their yard work around 4 o’clock, put the rice cooker on, fired up the charcoal grill, and gathered for cocktails or a fish fry while watching the sunset. On dark, low-tide nights, families quietly waded out carrying torches and nets to scoop up the sleeping fish, then returning to shore to “cook ‘em up quick” or salt them to grill the next day.
Thanks to generations of fastidious owners, Puako Kai is immaculate inside and out, lovingly landscaped bit by bit with mature coconut palms, plumeria, and royal Poinciana trees, colorful croton, “pua-be-still” and hibiscus. A simple floor plan of living/kitchen/dining area with a bedroom on either side provides comfort, privacy and ocean views from everywhere in the home. The décor has been thoughtfully enhanced with local art, including a Mary Koski print, carved-wood seashell containing collected shells, tropical wall hangings, screen, and shell and monkey-pod wood mobiles. The enclosed lanai adds living space for quiet reading or simple tea times, with a mini-bar and fridge to keep everyone hydrated and fed just a step from the outdoors.
Puako Kai makes intelligent use of its site, with a grassy backyard with lounge chairs for relaxing and a seaside stone overlook perfect for enjoying a cool glass of limeade while watching turtles, whales, and sunsets. A more recent trip to Japan inspired a redesign of the front yard, creating a pleasing open mosaic of hibiscus hedges punctuated by the existing fragrant and fruit-producing tiare gardenias, pikake, grapefruit, mango, beach plum, and lime trees.

We travel to The Big Island each year, this is first time at Puako Beach, the perfect place to enjoy a vac. House is very comfortable, kitchen is well stocked with utensils and lots of spices. A concrete patio sits above the beach, with steps to the beach. Tide pools are waiting to be explored Viewing the sunsets while relaxing with a cool drink in the evening is the best, The turtles also come in to rest in early evening. Scuba Diving is excellent in the Puako area, launch ramp is very near. Lots of fishing by the locals is done here nice to watch General Store is well stocked and friendly owners. Try the local beer, very good. Hope to return 2014 Sly (CA) Elkins (AZ)

I nicknamed this home "Tiffany's, Puako Branch"! The view is a gem! Some days it was so clear I could see the mountain ridges on Maui. Everything in the house was neat and very clean. The kitchen is well equipped and easy to clean as well as are the bathrooms and bedrooms. Each bedroom has a very efficient portable air conditioner which we used a little each day. The home has great cross breezes which is really good as Puako can get a bit warm at tImes. This is not the first time that we have stayed in an older home in Puako, each is unique in their own way. Puako Kai has a 10'x10' deck that sits 8-10' above the beach and is very close to the high tide line but back far enough to walk to the little beach close by. The pictures don't capture the feeling sitting there having a cup of coffee looking over the ocean. Its more like a private viewing deck. Locals come to fish, or dive off the lava rocks and its neat watching net fishermen. There are a lot of safe tide pools. It is a must to buy bird seed! There is a quite variety that will feed together. It got so that every morning the Java birds would wait on top of the palm fronds for me to put out seed. The Franklins would bring their families twice a day and the little yellow birds always came in pairs. The yard is neat and well kept with nice furniture. Puako is a great place to rent and rest! Waikoloa is close by with Starbucks, restaurants, stores and a food court at the Queens' Marketplace. We frequented the Island Gourmet for quick, fresh dinners at their deli. Our long time favorite, the King' Shops has a small Farmer's Market Wednesdays. The best tomatoes are from this market! John Keawe sings every Tuesday evening there in the court. No charge to sit and enjoy his master slack key guitar playing, often Hope will come and hula. About 6 miles north is Kawaihae and a favorite spot for us to dine is Cafe Pesto. Online reservations or walk-in. There are other nice restaurants there as well. Driving further north for about hour is beautiful Hawi and Kapaau. For the more adventuresome, drive on to Pololu to the very end of the road. Its a beautiful sight to see the several valleys to the other side of the island. The hike to the bottom is well worth the effort. The black sand is the finest sand I've ever touched. An added note...There are few gas stations north of Kailua-Kona. The Kings' Shops has one easy to find. Were looking forward to our stay next year at Puako Kai!

Our home away from home
Our home away from home
My wife and I have rented this property for several months during the past three years. Clearly, we love the house and the Puako area. The house is immaculately well-maintained and clean, and there is nearly always an offshore or trade wind breeze circulating through the house. Two excellent TVs, two separated bedrooms, and two separate full bathrooms. From our viewpoint, the outstanding aspect of this property is the raised patio which easily seats four people and is within 10 feet of the ocean. During all seasons, the Western view guarantees a full viewing of the sunset. This is clearly one of the choice ocean rental properties in the area.

Classic older home in a fabulous location. Great sunset views, turtles, palm trees, plumeria and star gazing filled our senses. It took a concerted effort to venture from the house- including nightly visits for star gazing. Kitchen and BBQ area well stocked and large enough for our needs to make great meals. Kind of wish beds were more comfortable and the tv larger-we were watching the baseball playoffs. Fell l in love with the neighborhood, local market and great community, Very close to wonderful beaches and snorkeling spots..beach 69 and end of Puako road. Robbie and Mary are welcoming, fun, professional and very responsive to a minor BBQ problem. Robbie helped us pick the right spot for our trip.. We are begrudgingly writing this review because we are secretly hoping it will be our second home and hoping the delightful owners will sell it to us. Ted and Janet
